my big project was bumped back a week, so I might be able to start singles a little earlier than I thought. It'll move much, much slower than the album list, though.

As well it should. Let me know if you'd like help with the teaser/intros.

I had heard every Beatles album before I was 18. I'm sure I'm not the only under 30 on here where that is the case.

Yeah I heard pretty much everything between the ages of 16 and 18. But by the time I was 16, I had listened to so much of the Stones, the Who and CCR and I'll take those bands over the Beatles any day.

I only own 2 TVZ records, and I DID vote for his self-titled disc (which I adore). I don't own the others (even though I should), but honestly, I've had a hard time with the production on High, Low and In Between and don't want to get another disc I don't like.

Plus, my Townes excitement got kinda thrown for a loop when I saw him live and he could barely sit on his stool and strum his guitar. It was the saddest performance I'd ever seen. 8 months later, he was dead, but my excitement for expanding my Townes collection still hasn't fully returned.

Wow. I guess that's what being a hard core alcoholic will do to you. I never understood that sort of thing. That would definitely not help things. I'm sure you know that the last song on El Corazon was written for Towne.

yeah, that's one of my all time favorite songs, too. Fort Worth Blues gives me goosebumps.

I do like the Live at the Bluebird cd with Earle, Townes and Guy Clark. Townes was semi-coherent and you could at least feel a bit of why he earned his great rep, even though, you can also hear how fucked up he is as well.

Hey Elc, have you seen this:

IPB Image

What a treasure trove. Heartbreaking footage of Townes, Guy Clarke working on his guitars, & a drunken juvenile delinquent by the name of Steve Earle hanging at Guy Clarke's place on Xmas night. Not to mention a crazy David Allen Coe playing a prison!

Interesting about '66 -- to get to 10, you have to go pretty deep into the Top 300. However, the Top 3 are ironclad at the top of just about any albums list one'll run across.
The Good Dr Bill
yeah, '66 is def. a three-hit wonder when it comes to albums. I can pretty well guarantee that that's not gonna be the case on our singles list, though.

The singles list is gonna be great, I can feel it. And probably much more unpredictable than the albums!
Mitchell
'74 is an odd year, there's no obvious contender for #1 that you'd think a large %age of people would agree on unlike the other years where there are three or four. Yet the year does have a wealth of albums that aren't quite top tear classics. Personally I had two from '74 in my top 10.

Good call on doing this by mid decade. I was skeptical at first, but it really seems to fit together here -- and it would have been weird to split up the punk and new wave stuff in the next one.

Yeah...75 to 84 will be very interesting with the end of classic rock and the emerging punk/new wave scene....I already know my top 2 picks for that time period...no brainers for me...but that's still a couple of weeks off.....

I'm really looking forward to the singles and am hoping for a mix of the classics with pure pop.

Does anything have a legitimate prayer against London Calling?

albumwise? Its closest competitors on the all-time list were Let it Be (#5) and Murmur (#9), both of which have a slight chance. I wouldn't bet on anything taking it down, though.

'75-'84 sucks for me because most punk & new wave bores or depresses me. i don't "get" London Calling, although i like a couple songs.

i also never "got" Joy Division. i left that for the cool kids while i cozied up to less-threatening, more melodic, radio-approved classic rock.

the Cure perked me up, and then R.E.M. saved me.

I vacillate on it. Sometimes I think it is his best, sometimes I think it's just among the best 5; but it's really great all the time. First Elvis record I got right when it came out... I wasn't disappointed. I even remember debating with my buddy over how Rolling Stone would review it. He was certain it'd be 5 stars. I correctly predicted 4 1/2. Kinda ridiculous that we cared, but hey those were different times then.

Is the countdown still going?

And I know it's over - still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Over and over and over and over
Over and over, ...
I know it's over
And it never really began
But in my heart it was so real

Cause its all in my head
I think about it over and over again
And I can’t keep picturing you with him
And it hurts so bad, yeah
Cause it’s on in my head
I think about it over and over again
I replay it over and over again
And I can’t take it yeah I can’t shake it
Nooo

for those of you looking for resources for singles, etc. I found a pretty good one here:

http://www.alaskajim.com/charts/yearlysingles/1984.asp#us

I have it on the 1984 singles, but you can surf your way wherever you want. The link titled, Top 40 Hits of ____ for each year contains a list of all the top 40 hits for that year in alphabetical order. A nice resource for finding those hit songs you had forgotten about prior to voting in the next singles poll.

Another great list resource is here:

http://www.rocklists.com/

End of year lists for various modern rock/alternative radio stations. Begins in 1980, KROC being the leading station.
