The Good Dr Bill
Hey, I know I said that I'd start with this yesterday, but I never got around to it, and today I realized that the reason was because my heart's really just not in this one. I was talking about it with Mitch in the Soulseek room after his fake-out yesterday and I realized how little I was looking forward to counting down a list where 95% of the albums are either ones that have been talked to death or that I've never even heard of before. So I'm sorry, but I just don't think I can go through with this one. Apologies to those of you who took the time to make lists.

The results are still tabbed, though, so I'll post the full results (with # of votes and points and everything) in a few minutes.

Mitchell
It's cool, it's too much to ask you to post 300 albums in the normal format for 4 lists and do 5 lots of approaching 400 singles.

Are you going to do it a là the movie thread in chunks of 20 with an increased sense of productions at the top end (ironically the least interesting section no doubt.)
scarymuppet
Blast. I have to go to a meeting now. Nice timing, jerk.
dano
Can't say I'm not a bit disappointed, but I certainly see where you're coming from. Bring on the list and thanks for taking the time to run these things and tab them all out and all that.
Rob Gordon
Yes Doc...no one will argue with your efforts of past present and future.....
still...I too was more looking forward to the singles countdown as well....

Sparks - Sparks

Year: 1971

US Chart Position: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: n/a

AMG Says: "Within the first track of their debut album -- the crisp, minimal pounder "Wonder Girl," [...] Sparks established themselves so perfectly that arguably the rest of the brothers' long career has been a continual refinement from that basic formula [...] Sparks remains a wonderfully entertaining listen and an honestly unique debut."

Van Morrison - Saint Dominic's Preview

Year: 1972

US Chart Position: #15

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)" (#61 US), "Redwood Tree" (#98 US)

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #17 (year), #175 (decade), #491 (all-time)

AMG Says: "While less thematically and sonically cohesive than Van Morrison's prior albums, Saint Dominic's Preview nonetheless hangs together on the strength of its songs, an intriguingly diverse collection which draws together the disparate threads of the singer's recent work into one sterling package."

yeah, that was sort of a tip-off I guess, even if I really had no desire to do the list I'd probably still give it away ten or twenty at a time.

Scott Walker - 4

Year: 1969

US Chart Position: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #27 (year), #96 (decade), #458 (all-time)

AMG Says: "Walker dropped out of the British Top Ten with his fourth album, but the result was probably his finest '60s LP. While the tension between the bloated production and his introspective, ambitious lyrics remains, much of the over-the-top bombast of the orchestral arrangements has been reined in, leaving a relatively stripped-down approach that complements his songs rather than smothering them."

Ranked Highest By: The Eyes (#25)

to some extent (and I was talking about this with Mitch last night), but it's still...well, it's still a list. And there's some cool stuff. Plus, counting down albums lists takes significantly less effort on my part than singles lists--no teasers and no YSIs. And I knew what I was getting into with this poll when I started it, I wouldn't have done it at all if I wasn't ready to follow through.
Mitchell
Well that's too low for a start. I was guessing that would be his highest album.

If a certain album with a cow on it is above that I'll be pissed off.

Randy Newman - Sail Away

Year: 1972

US Chart Position: #163

UK Chart Position: UK's got no love for Randy Newman, apparently

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #12 (year), #131 (decade), #361 (all-time)

AMG Says: "Whether he's writing for three pieces or 30, Newman makes superb use of the sounds available to him, and his vocals are the model of making the most of a limited instrument. Overall, Sail Away is one of Newman's finest works, musically adventurous and displaying a lyrical subtlety that would begin to fade in his subsequent works."

US Chart Position: #87

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: "Kissin' Time" (#83 US)

Acclaimed Music Ranking: n/a

AMG Says: "Kiss' 1974 self-titled debut is one of hard rock's all-time classic studio recordings. Kiss is chock full of their best and most renowned compositions, containing elements of Rolling Stones/New York Dolls party-hearty rock & roll, Beatles tunefulness, and Sabbath/Zep heavy metal, and wisely recorded primal and raw by producers Richie Wise and Kenny Kerner (of Gladys Knight fame). #150: GDB proves that God doesn't exist with an animated goatse gif and a series of sound clips of this entry from Amazon.com.

#73: GDB crashes the board by posting a 421 gb image of this album.

#32: GDB fakes his own death and travels around the world in obscurity, whispering the name of the next album in the ears of blind old people who strongly believe in angels.

#1: GDB travels into space, then accelerates to near-light speed and slams back into the earth, shattering it completely and leaving only a massive field of space debris that comes to rest forming a giant image of the cover of this album.
