Err no. I'm more likely to get laughed at the street to be honest then be called a hipster. Not really sure what's hip about a Briton liking football and cricket and one of the most famous British films of my life time.
If I was
that hip I'd not have 2,000+ posts to my name

Looks like spring has started today so I can outside now!

Mike Leigh's films are great but they hardly capture the zeitgist. Consider, of course, the soundtrack too.

Sounds like someone was forced to participate in a middle school production of HMS Pinafore.
Maybe he can go through the whole thing for you?

Anyway it's a fantastic movie.

No, I just had to read that Victorian wank and write about it.
so anyway
Tony
Apr 6 2006, 11:59 AM
You read them without listening to the music? That's crazy. Or is just a distate for anything Victorian.
Anyway I recently saw Shallow Grave and was surpised at how lame it was. What's the big deal?

I'm not a fan of Gilbert & Sullivan, but I really dug Topsy-Turvy. You get to see the Mikado visualized from the ground up, but if you're expecting to hear musical numbers, I think you only get a taste. There may have been one or two numbers in their entirety, but they may have been costume rehearsals, with no musical backing, I can't recall. Besides, the Mikado seems to be a big departure from the usual G&S shtick, and it helps make the picture look more appealing.

It's pretty much right in line with their usual schtick. It' was always a good schtick though. They virtually invented the pop song in English.

This was one of my favorite movies in high school. Maybe it still is, but I haven't seen it since then and I've learned that my high school taste wasn't exactly infallible. In any event, it is a great movie.

I still think Trainspotting holds up very well a decade later. And what a pair of soundtracks it yielded. I still like the movie better than the book.
But yeah, Mike Leigh's stuff is far stronger, especialy that astonishing run of High Hopes/Life is Sweet/Naked/Secrets and Lies.

Career Girls was OK but Tospy Turvy, All or Nothing and Vera Drake are terrific.

Yeah, Career Girls was only okay. But All of Nothing has to be his most underrated, it sort of slipped by under the radar. Usually there's such a massive critical/art house audience reaction to Leigh's films but that one came and went.
