Full Version: Greatest rock band of the last ten years = Drive By Truckers

Montana
There is no logical argument which can displace them. Also of note is that the Truckers blow most other live acts out of the water. And isn't that really what rock music is about?A final piece of their devestating arsenal is the ability to create quality imagery.

Exhibit A:

Back in the thirties when the dust bowl dried
And the woods in Alabama didn't see no light
My Daddy played poker by a hard wood fire
Squeezing all his luck from a hot copper wire
Scrap like a wildcat fights till the end
Trap a wildcat and take his skin
Deal from the bottom, put the ace in the hole
One hand on the jug but you never do know

Son come running
You better come quick
This rotgut moonshine is making me sick
Your Mama called the law and they're gonna take me away
Down so far even the Devil won't stay
Where I call to the Lord with all my soul
I can hear him rattling the chains on the door
He couldn't get in I could see he tried
Through the shadows of the cage around the forty watt light

Exhibit B:

Maybe it's the twenty-six mile drive from Zip City to Colbert Heights
Keeps my mind clean
Gets me through the night
Maybe you're just a destination, a place for me to go
A way to keep from having to deal with my seventeen-year-old mind all alone
Keep your drawers on, girl, it ain't worth the fight
By the time you drop them I'll be gone
And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life

You say you're tired of me taking you for granted
Waiting' up till the last minute to call you up and see what you want to do
Well you're only fifteen, girl, you ain't got no secretary
And "for granted" is a mighty big word for a country girl like you
You know it's just your Daddy talking
Cause He knows that blood red carpet at the Salem Church of Christ
Ain't gonna ever see no wedding between me and you

Zip City it's a good thing that they built a wall around you
Zip up to Tennessee then zip back down to Alabama
I got 350 heads on a 305 engine
I get ten miles to the gallon
I ain't got no good intentions

Exhibit C:

I got green and I got blues
and everyday there's a little less difference between the two.
So I belly-up and disappear.
Well I ain't really drowning 'cause I see the beach from here.

I could take a Greyhound home but when I got there it'd be gone
along with everything a home is made up of.
So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take all of what you got
to kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love.

Sister, listen to what your daddy says.
Don't be ashamed of things that hide behind your dress.
Belly-up and arch your back.
Well I ain't really falling asleep; I'm fading to black.

You could come to me by plane, but that wouldn't be the same
as that old motel room in Texarkana was.
So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take all of what you got
to kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love.

Stop me if you've heard this one before:
A man walks into a bar and leaves before his ashes hit the floor.
Stop me if I ever get that far.
The sun's a desperate star that burns like every single one before.

And I could find another dream,
one that keeps me warm and clean
but I ain't dreamin' anymore, I'm waking up.
So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take everything you got
to kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love.

There is considerably more supporting evidence, but clearly those three examples maim any competition.
Mitchell
Glad you have approached this with such an open mind.

BR makes a good point, but I agree with Montana.
Duff.
Eh.

i like drive by truckers when it comes to ... . . . . .. "rock and roll" etc

but i prefer the city rock to the country rock

queens of the stone age are more sleek but at the same time dirty and aggressive as hell, and their last album is much better than i thought before

i prefer queens of the stone age sophistication, evil, the drive behind their music, and much higher level of legitimate badassery

and if you have videos proving josh homme to be something else don't post them, i prefer my current idea image of him
Duff.
Rated R is fucking classic. Ever track.
cheese picture
every QOTSA album is great, great ballads too

tangled up in plaid, i never came, etc

edit: for sure about rated r, nothing else like it that i've heard

have you not heard Feel Good Hit Of The Summer??

Well, I'm glad we've got that sorted out. I was just wondering who Monty thought the greatest rock band of the last ten years was (I would've assumed he'd had gone with the Lips).

I think given a vote, I'd throw Spoon into the mix.
MuteSuperstar
I don't expect many here to agree but I would give My Morning Jacket this title.
Best live band I've seen in the past ten years, no question.

Montana's right, guys.

Agreed.

And I don't even like them. Or rock for that matter.

Song by song. Bring it.

depends upon what yr definition of "rock 'n roll" is, i'd guess.

dbts are certainly one of the best country-rock acts to make music out of america in the last decade, but super furry animals' body of work is stronger on a pound-for-pound basis than the dbts.

super furry animals' body of work is just as strong, and bluebottle kiss (and by extension jamie hutchings solo work) more than matches them both.

but each to their own.
spiritofeden
pretty sure we already started this, and you bailed on it.

e.

There is also no logical argument which can place them at the #1 spot, not without a deconstruction of their lyrics and imagery which also deconststructs and explains why their competition fares the worse. As I'm sure you already know. I can think of three or four bands which easily rival them. Please, for the love of everything holy, stop the mindles trolling and actually make a cogent argument - just once.

As you won't be able to, I hereby abandon this thread to the suckers more willing to play your sad, predictable game.

Hey, FWIW. the DBT's wiki page tells quite a story:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drive-by_truckers

Funny thing-- I would've thought that they were more than 14 years old.

But yeah, they are about the only "new" rock band that I'm willing to call "great" and "lasting", meaning that their music will live on, as well as they have a chance to take the title for best touring band, bar none. I'm starting to think they might have peaked in popularity already, and they are always only going to be known by "people in the know", kinda like Th Tragically Hip. I'm not saying that they are relegated to a "cult" following, but I dont' really see them gettign any bigger than they are now.

Jack White is quite a musician and a heckuva guitar player. Thing is, if he wasn't so multi-talented, I'd say he was sorta heading for "Clapton-ville", that status where everybody knows you're great, but they wonder why you never settled down and stuck with one great band. Don't get me wrong, either-- I think the Raconteurs proabably are that band. Jackie just likes to stick his fingers in a lotta pies.

They are a good band. But I'd like them better if every other song wasn't such a depressing trailer park story.

BT - in spite of your unfortunate embrace of RUSH, you know I respect your opinions, when you qualify them. Please do so here before entire thread falls into the category of "METALLICA RULEZ CUZ I SAY THEY DO!!!!"
By-Tor
They have the most relentlessly "long" live show out there. You will be at a DBT's show, and you'll wonder when they will run out of material, because they never stop playing. Their musicianship is why I rank them so high. Plus, they keep trying to do something different with every album.

--That's trying to explain my DBT's statement. As for the "Hip" comparison, it's meant to be a serious compliment. The Hip are a pretty "huge" band, but they never really got the radioplay and support that they needed in the states, to get bigger, or to be as big as say, REM. XRT can help make a band, but they dont' control more than one station, really.

As for the Clapton-compariosn for White-- what I mean is, everybody knows that Clapton is to be respected, (especially because of what he did with his supergroup, Cream) but I belong to that Clapton fan club that wonders what coulda been, if he would've surrendered some of his ego, and just been a player in someone else's band, with maybe a little vocal support. That's how I feel about White-- he's incredibly talented, but I think his ego keeps him from doing more with his gifts. The Raconteurs are a great band, but why can't White get together a supergroup, filled with virtuosos? Hey, what can I say, I'm a 70's prog-rock fan, so what do ya expect?

Hope that helped, KTF. Wasn't sure what point you wanted clarified.
spiritofeden
so, White Stripes it is then.

Seriously, I saw the DBTs 3x (opening for a band I like) and couldn't wait for their set to be over each time. Most of it wasn't even what most consider to be rock music. It's jammy, sedate Americana.

Several other threads have considered this very argument at some length. Montana has fully restated his position.

Exeunt omnes.

"Sedate Americana," regardless of that being either a good or a bad thing, is spot-on. Alarmingly so.

"Sedate Americana" sounds like the name of a track that would've been on The Hold Steady's last album.
