this exact thought crossed my mind as well. similar vocal range, but somehow the inflection doesn't sound like an imitation of neko's porno-pop stuff.

There's more of a monotonous slacker quality to the Best Coast chick's voice than Neko's. Similar to the kind of vocals that you might hear on the Vivian Girls albums. Has the charm of a normal every day female trying her hand at carrying a tune. Different kind of thing from Neko Case's more grating than great oversung bleeting.
I'll probably listen to this soon. "When I'm With You" is on it and that's one of the best songs ever!
I know her sister, too. She's a real sweetie.

Jul 14 2010, 12:49 PM
true, but this girl has a way stronger voice and sense of singing in key than Vivian Girls
and i guess i should have clarified, it reminds me of older Neko more than her last 3-4 albums obviously

Was that the first Best Coast release? Because I thought it was the one with "Sun Was High". And that's still my favorite, btw.
I hope that she is improving, but to me it seems more like she's inconsistent. Not terribly so, though, as even her worst - of what I've heard - isn't bad.

i'm not joking... but i've not heard anything prior to the full length. were the singles lo-fi?
the proper album is not exactly lo-fi (i have a CD copy, can't speak for leaks/streams)
i worked in a studio for 3 years... it's not the most full production ever, but the album actually has pretty good dynamic range and instrument separation to be considered 'lo-fi' in my book. it's not like this sounds like an old GBV or Mountain Goats record.
Whatever, thats not really the point. The songs are average bedroom pop. No one will remember this chick come winter. I wouldnt hate it if someone threw it on as background at a BBQ, but thats not exactly the highest compliment.

no, that was the only point i was arguing actually, but i'm over it

i'm fine that you don't dig it, but it's not like it's some hugely polarizing album.
trust me, i heard a lot of hype about the record prior to checking it out the other day and was very skeptical myself.
the melodies on almost every track get stuck in my head for hours. will i care about it after summer 2010? who knows, but for right now i'm liking it a lot.
hell, even that newest Wavves album is a HUGE improvement on his last record (which had 1 good song). but i like this way more than the new Wavves.

Good album.
Hardly lo-fi or even classifiable as "bedroom pop." As Solace and I both pointed out earlier, she has indeed made music that sounds like she crapped it out into a tape recorder. Crazy For You is absolutely not an example of said music. This shit has dope backing vox, lovely 12 string lines, well placed reverb, and many hooks. Some commendably competent pop songwriting here, IMO.

Correct.
There's been a conscious movement in Bethany's sound away from the Vivian Girls-type scuzzy guitar stuff towards a cleaner, fuller sound more reminiscent of, say, She & Him, Camera Obscura and as mentioned up thread, Neko Case fronting Girls, with the newer singles ("Our Deal", "Boyfriend"), and now this album as a whole.

however, camera obscura write good/great melodies that transcend the kind of shit any joe with a guitar could come up with in half an hour by singing randomly into the air
forget it, i just hate her fucking voice. scum
