Don't forget that Reagan ran unsuccessfully for President in '68 & '76 before winning in '80, and he's still St. Ronnie to NeoCons who would never put their faith in a Liberal like him:

• Former Union President during the 'late '40s & '50s (although he later took a hard line against Labor Unions during the Air Traffic Controller strike)
• Originally a New Deal Democrat, switching to the Republican party in '62
• Legalized Abortion in California
• Instituted the "Welfare State" by eliminating all state support of anyone who found work, so you'd have to live two weeks to a Month without any money before receiving a paycheck if you left Welfare, meaning you'd starve if you left it; the California Welfare rolls swelled by 500% during his Governorship
• Gave a speech at the 1976 GOP convention in opposition to the possibility of a nuclear exchange with the USSR; later as President he spoke out against nuclear war, and reduced the number of nuclear warheads in the US stockpile by 1/3
• Raised Taxes 6 times in 8 years as President
• Granted Amnesty to 3 Million Illegal Immigrants
• Nominated centrist jurist Sandra Day O"Connor to the Supreme Court
• Advocated Gun Control for Handguns & Assault Weapons
• His budget spending Quadrupled the National Debt
• Was knighted by the Queen of England, meaning that if the Thirteenthers had their way he'd be stripped of his citizenship

The country has shifted rightward so badly, that yes, Ronnie today would be laughed out of consideration for the Republican nomination today. But these are different days; Newt didn't just lose, he was embarrassed in 98, and modern-day Republicans can't brook that. Raw tribalism won't allow it.

Once again, I have a better chance at being elected president than Newt. He has absolutely positively zero chance. Zero.

And yet he's doing better than Palin in the polls.
