haha they're so good.
anyway, if this thread dies that's fine. it needed to be made though
favorite album: Hello Nasty. people say Paul's Boutique was really advanced. and it was. but they took it far deeper on this release and a few previous. seems very underrated to me. very!

Paul's Boutique > Check Your Head > Hello Nasty > Ill Communication
Agree with you on Hello Nasty. great songs all over that record. Boutique is basically a 10 for me, though.

i heartily recommend and endorse this thread.
picking a favourite is tough. i really don't know. the first i heard of them was check your head, i think, but hello nasty was so much fun. paul's boutique is fantastic, and ill communication is also tops.
what a group they've been. amazing live too.

Put them in the category of bands I wish I liked but I didn't. I've only heard the most popular stuff though, and only 'Licensed To Ill' in full, so maybe I should give them another chance. It just seemed so goofy and ridiculous to me, and in a cringe way not a good way. As someone who wasn't really around at the time I think they've aged badly.

Listen to Check Your Head Coma. That one has aged beautifully imo. I bet you'd dig it.

Glad to see Hello Nasty love. That might stand up over time as their ultimate statement. Such a dense, diverse record that really got overlooked a bit. Paul's is a masterpiece, but Nasty took that spirit into using instruments. There's just some really crazy music on there, unlike anything people have done before or since.
Those two records are also the ones where the BBoys swap mic from line to line, or phrase to phrase in some cases, whereas Head and Communication see more often them changing verse-to-verse. A subtle difference, but I think they're at their best when more aggressively weaving their rhymes.

Ah man, me and three of my best friends (one of whom is in town from Korea after 2+ years) got drunk, played pool, and rocked this jukebox in a dive bar last night. We kept putting on Beasties and singing every word to every song. Great stuff.
We discussed last night and two of us (me included) rated Check Your Head the highest and the other two rated Ill Communication the highest. But I do really like all their records.

First two are perfect. Second two very nearly so. Hello Nasty wore thin quick, need to hear it again. Last one, I'm indifferent.

Intriguing. I almost feel that about "Car Thief" on Paul's. It doesn't kill the record, but it's not like I look forward to it, either.

Sure, the others are more innovative and stylistically varied, but Licensed just drips with attitude and frankly scared me a little as a kid.

Agreed about Licensed to Ill being their best. I wouldn't really call their other stuff "innovative," but I'm pretty sure I'm in in the minority there.

I went to a classmate's birthday party when I was about 7 or 8. The big present he got and freaked out over was his parents getting him
Licensed to Ill (on cassette!). All the other kids were like "yeah!" and his parents let us listen to it on the way to Chuck E. Cheese. I felt left out as the other kids already had the tape and were singing along to "Brass Monkey" and "Girls". My parents were not strict at all growing up and they never prevented me from seeing TV/movies/music videos or anything like that, but I do remember feeling like "wait, we're allowed to listen to this???"

Definitely seemed like forbidden fruit...and I was 12 or 13 at the time. Maybe that's why I'm intensely bonded with it, although I have great memories associated with
Paul's Boutique and
Check Your Head as well.

anyway, the rapping on this record is some of their best ever. "nonstop disco powerpack" is fantastic. Reminds me of the Treacherous 3.
