If those songs don't all clock in around 2.5 minutes then this album is going to be way too long.

The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie sounds like it could be the title to an awesome late 80s Chili Peppers song. It'll probably not be so groovy in 2011 tho.

I've actually enjoyed a lot of the new stuff. The best of is actually pretty listenable, almost in a new Smashing Pumpkins kind of guilty pleasure way. Again, like the SP, I don't give a fuck about this band enough to feel cheated by their new material. As a result I usually enjoy it for a month or two.

At this point I mostly admire them for 1) being in the game so long and still lodging actual hit songs, and 2) having a Herculean work effort when it comes to writing. Pretty sure they write a
Stadium Arcadium amount of tunes for every record and edit them down, except for that one (obvs).
But man, can't they change up their production style even a smidge? The last three records all sound like they were recorded at the same freaking session. I blame Rick Rubin.

I don't agree, maybe Nickleback and Linkin Park for crap-rock douchebaggery.
Whereas Indie Douchbags flock to whatever NPR is playing.
RHCP are somewhere along side U2, SP, Cure etc. in the category of washed up but still putting in a decent effort. Most of the love for them now is centered around nostalgia not douchebaggery.

RHCP are kinda like Foo Fighters. They've never really descended into making awful records, just forgettable ones that follow a certain formula. I own Stadium Arcadium and I never listen to it. It's not shitty. It's just that it all blurs together in a big blah ball of what they've been doing for twenty years. Proof of that is that when I saw The Fighter and heard the RHCP song in that one scene, I thought "Hey, this is a decent little RHCP song" and it turned out I already owned the damn thing and had all but blocked it from memory.

Seriously. The last 3 albums are good...and totally interchangeable in every way. There's no real filler, it all reaches a fairly high level of quality. But because the production is exactly the same, it just all blends together.

According to wikipedia
"Flea said that the Rolling Stones albums Exile On Main Street and Tattoo You were major influences on the new music and he listened to both albums often during the writing of the album."
I had incredibly low expectations for this album before reading this, but now it seems like it might be end up being kind of awesome. also Josh Klinghoffer is no joke and should not be underestimated, but oh yeah, Anthony Keidis still sings for the band......

These guys used to be one of my favorite bands from 4th-8th grade. Even stuck with them through By The Way, which I felt had about 4 or 5 quality tunes. Stadium Arcadium was where they lost me and I haven't been able to quite call myself a fan since. I'd honestly like for them to create something worthwhile again since they were so integral to me getting heavily in to music and their past discography is pretty solid, but the news of an upcoming release just leaves me with a sense of apathy. I'm really not looking forward to the day where I have to tell everyone, "Oh, I'm too cool to listen to the Chili Peppers."

Never got into this band, except to admire Flea's technique. Still, the prospect of listening to a new album from them is magnitudes more appealing than, say, something new from GNR or Aerosmith. Or the planned abomination by Lou Reed & Metallica.

yeah actually klinghoffer's contributions are the best part of this. the noisy solo break is pretty gnarly.
kiedis is in self parody territory, and the "scissor beat" is pretty forced and generic, like an approximation of how they think they need to sound in 2011 where indie dance music is a cool thing with the kids. i like the layered percussion at the end with the snakey guitar line. the last 45 seconds of this are the best. that's how the song should have started.

Funny, because I'm increasingly of the opinion that the last 3 albums with Frusciante are the best things they've ever done.
I was listening to
Mother's Milk the other day. Those earlier records are charming, sure, but it's schticky as hell and way too self-referential for my tastes.

i completely stand behind everything about Stadium Arcadium sans anthony kiedis' contributions. the production and guitar work/band interplay on that album is seriously awesome. it is spoiled only by some 40 year old dude singing shit like "you try to be a lady but you're walkin' like a sour kraut." if john sang on the whole album and wrote all the lyrics it would be one of my favorite albums of the decade.

I like about 3 songs on the album. They could be described as the most "Californication-y Songs" the rest is terrible. I've liked allot of their new stuff, not loved, but I'm okay with just liking it. This one doesn't have the same strength in the melodies. This album relies too heavily on vocals and drums and that doesn't cut it for me on a RHCP album. Though, I will say the drumming on this album is the best they've done in some time.
