Yeah, I left out the shorts, hence the words "feature-length" in the poll title (probably should've put that in the poll question as well).
Can you believe Burton was up for After Hours until Scorsese wanted it? It's in the DVD, but Griffin Dunne approached Scorsese first, then didn't hear anything when Burton accepted it. But then Scorsese got back to them and said he wanted it, so Dunne had to break the news to Burton. To Burton's great credit, he made it easy on him; no arguments, he said something like, "Martin Scorsese wants to direct this? I won't get in the way, if he wants it, I'll gladly step aside."
Yeah, definitely a love-it/hate-it type director. He really grew on me after awhile. I dig his stuff because you don't see many people doing these kinds of films, at least at the mainstream level. If there's anything that bothers me, it's the scripts. Even his most imaginative films are bogged down by clumsy stories. I love Ed Wood, but in retrospect, it feels a little shallow. Still great to look at, the acting's great...I put the blame on the writers, the same guys who wrote Man on the Moon.

Funny he's so classy here, as opposed to his reaction at this year's Academy Awards when Aardman won for
Wallace & Grommit. Burton looked like he'd swallowed a live crab. The Aardman guys jumped up and were all happy. Burton, who was right in front of them, couldn't be bothered to even look at them.

I've never thought of it as a purely american thing, but it might be. For some reason, I've always associated Paul Reuben's comedy with John Waters; and maybe's it's because they both have somewhat of an obsession with americana and kitsch (although Pee Wee is more subversive, whereas Waters pretty much leaves nothing to the imagination)...plus they both look like weasely perverts.
PWBA is also a road movie, which is a quintessential american film genre, but I always assumed you didn't have to be american to enjoy a road movie...

I really never understood the love for Ed Wood. Sure, Martin Landau's absolutely brilliant as Lugosi, but I have a hard time getting into a film when the main characters are people I really wouldn't choose to hang out with for 5 minutes, let alone 2+ hours.
Personally, I have a soft spot for the flawed-yet-clever Mars Attacks!. Well, I like scifi. And I like how so many Hollywood stars were willing to lampoon their careers from start to finish. Beetlejuice is fun, but really needed more Beetlejuice. Edward Scissorhands was a fun commentary on suburbia, altho I really felt zero chemistry between Wynona Rider and, well, everyone else onscreen. So to make her be the central storyteller really flattens out the film a bit. Pee Wee's Big Adventure was brilliant, tho. I hated it the first time, and then found myself loving it the second time. Go figure.
All of his other films tend to leave me kinda bored. He is a fantastic visual director, but he has a very clumsy style with story and character development. After the story fell apart 1/2 way thru Corpse Bride (when the lead character announces his intent to kill himself to, oh, I dunno, marry some dead twit who pretty much kidnapped him just to make her happy), I pretty much decided to stop wasting any more time on his films.
