Personally I don't care if a record is from 2007 or 1967 in this thread,
as long as it's interesting.

I'll give that album a shot, Helmet. Oh yeah, I think your PM box is full,
I tried to give you a heads up on that Sonoia Caves cd and I couldn't get
the message through.

Thank you for your help on giving me the most fantastic download site i've come across in quite some time. I thank you very much Ackbar. From this site, I'm absolutely blown away by this record:

Download this record. Thank me and Ackbar later.

Actually, thinking about this record, its probably not ambient. I just can't think of a better thread to put it in. How about the "awesome album thread where noone has ever heard of this" thread.

yeah that album is pretty good, i need to be in the right mood for it. it is hard to just sit and listen to it, and it is certainly not background music.

but that blog is pretty ace, i think last week i went through and downloaded at least 20 albums off it.

Also, could someone re-up the Helios link? I missed it. sad.gif

Chris Herbert -- Mezzotint (kranky, 2006)

From Kranky:
Mezzotint is a collection of digital, textured pieces assembled through the extensive manipulation of found sounds and environmental sources. A dedicated non-musician, Chris Herbert has a long-standing interest in intuitive composition and the elastic nature of sound as a resource, influenced by the collage ethic and the instantaneous capture of performance. Working with decidedly low-tech methods (Chris uses minidiscs, a battle-worn desktop PC and a badly-behaved delay pedal), many of the tracks came into being through guerrilla sessions during his day job. The pieces are essentially improvisations created by extended rehearsal and juxtaposition. Mezzotint is the consequence of a continual process of subtraction and composting, leaving just a trace of melody or the implication of rhythm. The result is a spontaneous, embracing the mystery of faraway broadcasts and the internal experience: a clouded, busy music of vertical activity and blended, indistinct color as opposed to narrative uni-direction. Chris' signature swampy, gaseous, and even dirty, crumpled sound is a welcome contrast to the clean, edgeless granular cloud aesthetic employed by an increasing number of artists.

the above review from Kranky does not do justice to the music on this cd.
It's yet another great ambient release of the year. Relaxing radio wave
samples drone over slightly appearing and dissappearing microhouse pulses.

so I have been listening to that machinefabrik (sp) album and damn, wolkenkrabber is quite the beautiful tune. makes the rest of the disc worth trying again. and I like the new eluvium but I dont think its gonna be a long lasting stand out. my favorite song it the piano number, eluvium ends up sounding like one bar of sigur ros played over and over to me. doesnt really have much complexity but I will try the new one again.

I'm loving the new Eluvium, so i can't say i agree with you there, but i do agree about the awesomeness of Machinefabriek.

If you (or anyone) would like, i can u/l some of his other stuff for ya. I've got three of his CD-R's (of many...the guys got a crazy huge discography for only having one official full-length!!).

I'd say classy, not cheesy. Although its almost too orchestrated for me in sections, I do like it a lot. Although i like TATT better at this point.
Artem
that's the thing. those orchestrations were horrible. some sort of pocket symphonies. why not just compose classical music if you're into that type of stuff.
Threadkiller
I think he's going for a Max Richter-ish "post-classical" vibe with Copia. Kinda an amalgam of Classical and Ambient (albeit without the Richterian Electronic mixed in).

I'm still on the fence with Eluvium too. I had some of his music and it didn't grow on me,
but I'm going to give this one a chance.
The Luscious Phil
i suppose Copia could be seen as cheesy (the horns are not very subtle, and he really does not need the added flourishes, but i wont act like they don't hit a home run for me). Eluvium has risen out of nowhere to become one of my current faves.

Milieu - Beyond the Sea Lies the Stars
QUOTE
Mining a provenance of sounds from a distant & disbanded orchestra Milieu reassembles then quietly broadcasts the collected notes into a wide expanse. It is his first full ambient offering to be heard from a library of many hours of sound experimentation in drone, ambient and lush found sound litanies. Beyond the Sea is shrouded in distant fog…there are lights that seem to appear briefly and then are calmly eclipsed. There is a fascination in this nebulous balance of sonorous melodies from decades ago, almost hopeful, yet an undercurrent of a somber theme that is draped over the entire composition…

This is American composer Milieu’s first proper release – following two limited edition releases for the Belgian label U-Cover. Influences include The Caretaker’s ‘Haunted Ballroom’ and from William Basinski’s ‘Disintegration Loops’ series.

The Caretaker - Stairway to the Stars

QUOTE
Building on his debut album ‘Selected Memories…’, V/VM’s ‘The Caretaker’ took his sound into even more mysterious and haunted places on ‘A Stairway to the Stars’. The easiest and most obvious point of reference would be David Lynch’s ‘Eraserhead’, a film which uses vinyl crackle and old ballroom music in a way that sends shivers down your spine. The Caretaker has a similar intent, old records are pushed through haunting textures and effects to create a buzzing noisescape, a world of dancing dwarves, mutant babies and singing belles. In my opinion this album is The Caretaker’s finest moment, the whole thing blending together in a way that paints a murderous narrative only usually realised on celluloid. If you have any interest in Angelo Badalamenti or more recently Deaf Center then you really owe it to yourself to check out ‘A Stairway to the Stars’. A fantastic and totally peculiar record. BT - This Binary Universe

wikipedia says:
QUOTE
This Binary Universe is the fifth album by composer and electronica artist Brian Transeau (BT) released on August 29, 2006.

This work was composed and produced by BT specifically for 5.1. The CD is packaged with a DVD featuring all the compositions of the album in DTS 5.1 surround sound and features films by a collection of computer artists and animators.

The album makes extensive usage of a technique called circuit bending, often intentionally miswiring and short-circuiting keyboards, children's toys, and even Furbys to achieve a completely random sequence of sounds that is then time-corrected to keep the rhythm and beat of the song. Also, many of the beats and rhythms in the album were created by computer programs Brian Transeau developed himself for exclusively achieving the effects he wanted to implement. Such programs include Stutter Edit and Break Tweaker.

i say: If i had known about this even 5 minutes sooner, it would have easily threatened to be my fav album of 2006. Yes, it is really good.

Rameses III - Matanuska

Merry Christmas ambient fans. Here's the new one from Rameses III. Its a keeper.

QUOTE
During the quiet nights of winter while the snow gently falls outside, the fireplace offers warmth and light. The UK's Rameses III hail from a place where subtle drifts are priceless. These insular drones are highlighted by rich acoustic depths, adding so much contrast that it's heartbreaking. Recordings of birds add a natural grace, and in the context, this trio is freed. Within these digital walls rises something majestic, extracted from the soil. With their latest full-length release, Rameses III build upon their burgeoning reputation as architects of some of the most beautifully striking soundscapes around. Matanuska invites metaphor, conjures atmosphere and envelopes the listener in its shroud. Glistening waves of string and keyboard hum and shimmer to create wondrous ambient sculptures that eventually find release in a blossom of bucolic folk. Matanuska will appeal to fans of Stars Of The Lid, Eyvind Kang, Brian Eno, Thomas Koner and Richard Youngs

This is dreamy and minimal, quiet analog synth bliss. I kind of think of it as a response
to Eno's Music for Airports, in that it shares the same ideas of constructing minimal
melody lines that repeat with subtle adjustments, guiding one into a hypnotic state.
While Eno's style is more stoic and thoughtfully planned, Roach's music ebbs and flows
gently in organically calm directions. It's not as distracting or omnipresent as most of
Roach's work to come.

I don't know if what I wrote made any sense laugh.gif but I love this album and you should
give it a hear.

Xela - The Dead Sea

QUOTE
You have the full range from Pink Floyd's "The Wall" to the Liars' "They Were Wrong So We Drowned". No matter which of those you think is cheesy and which of those is mysterious won't matter when it comes to Xela's instrumental masterpiece "The Dead Sea". The tracks range from the sinister violin shimmer and drone of the opener "The Gate" to the curious "Drunk on Salt Water" that could easily find a home on Tom Waits' Bone Machine album. Pretty much from that point on, the only thing being drunken in this soundtrack appears to be blood, with songs like "Creeping Flesh", "Savage Ritual" and "Sinking Cadavers". But Xela cleverly mixes the tension and terror with an incredible amount of acoustic grace and strange electronic beauty, never going for indulgent and stereotypical horror histrionics.

The beauty of this concept album, as is the case with all good concept records, is that it survives without the concept attached. The music of "The Dead Sea" stands on its own, a sometimes frightening, sometimes enchanting sound that is even more infectious and insidious in its tension once it has brought you into its dark and salty waters.

If you haven't heard the Tim Hecker, Machinefabriek, and Xela records, that's a phenomenal place to start. All three are incredible.

I'm already into 2007, but i've found some unbelievable ambient records that were recorded in 2006. I'll post them shortly.

The fascinating thing about ambient music in 2006 is that it has crossed over into the metal arena in a huge way. There are so many metal artists who have crossed over including Orthelm, Skullflower, Mouthus, Limbs of the Thawn, Shuta Hasanuma, etc. This isn't a complaint whatsoever. There are alot of bands trying to replicate the Philip Glass/Stockhausen hypnotic aesthethic to ambient music. We're a lucky message board because of that.
