"The Pearl" is a fantastic album. I really enjoy Eno/Budd's work.
I agree, this is one of my faves. I've never been crazy about
Apollo.
My favorite Eno ambient album is
On Land.and if people like
The Pearl, they've got to check out
Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror. it's also with Harold Budd.

Yeah, I should probably post
On Land sometime. I had Apollo for quite a while and I only started appreciating it recently. Can't say why. Also I'll add that Budd's solo work stands strong on his own. And in addition to his work with Eno he collaborated with Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins fame, but have yet to hear that one.

Wow, I'm really liking this James Plotkin & Mick Harris album. Thanks for posting it. This is the type of ambient I really like. Not necessarily 'dark', but slow moving, ebb and flow type of stuff.

That's on the Cocteau's "Moon and the Melodies," and it's frankly no greater than the sum of its parts (i.e. sounds like a Junior Varsity Twins album with Budd tinkling in the background).

Cool.
Just curious, which Tarentel album you thinking of getting? I'd recommend either "From Bone to Satellite" or "The Order of Things." Their newer stuff is a bit more drum oriented (but in a damn fine way), whereas their older material has more ambient qualities.
I have almost everything they've put out so far, just looking for a few tracks here and there, mainly compilation appearances.

I had never heard of YSI's before, but am now figuring it out thanks to you guys. Thanks for the downloads! I am looking forward to uploading some of my own stuff eventually.
I do have a few mixes I can offer. One in particular will be of interest to ambient fans. Its called "Tea Time at Brian Eno's House". It's an 80 minute mix/collage of Eno & other ambient music & field recordings. It's a beautiful mix that I wish I could take credit for, but it was done by a friend of mine.

I usually go straight to the labels. That way it puts money fast into their pockets. Kranky is good because they charge $11 per cd without any shipping. It's hardly worth finding used copies for many of these cd's, because they are hard to come by and they rarely charge under the price of a new one.

from Amazon.com:
Arvo Pärt's Alina follows a simple-enough formula. Two stark instrumental works from the master of holy minimalism repeat each other, each time slightly different. But the blissful results--quiet, haunting, and thoroughly hypnotizing--meld to create one of classical music's best albums of 2000. It's as intense and sublime as contemporary classical music can be. --Jason Verlinde

that quick review sums this up well. This classical album exists under the branch of ambient in my book. It's not challenging at all, playful with melody as Eno did on his earlier ambient records (like discreet music and music for airports), and I can't help but feel Sigur Ros learned a thing or two from this man.

Maybe this is kind of a stretch for this thread. It's not traditional ambient music in any way, definitely no in the classic Eno/Aphex Twin vein, anyway. It's pretty much just all solo percussion with limited electronics on some of the tracks, sometimes very minimal in a way that reminds me of Stars of the Lid (don't know if it will do the same for anyone else, though). I think/hope that a few people who dig most of the other stuff in this thread will enjoy it... probably more than most Wilco fans are going to, inevitably.

I have another ambient mix that I just posted. It's called "Quiet Night, Quiet Stars". It's intended as background music for stargazing.
You can find it here...
LowLight Mixesalong with a complete tracklisting.
As I say at the blog, I have a ton of "space" music that would be appropriate for stargazing, so trying to sort through it all would make my head explode. So I just did simple searches for words like 'stars', 'sky', 'night' and 'moon'. from that manageable list I put together the mix.
I hope you enjoy it.
