Something to look forward to. I can't wait.

They've been talking about doing tour dates in the USA for a while now, saying they're lining them up. I hope they can follow through.

KILN
Dusker
GI-56 | SMM LP VIII | CD/digital | 13 November 2007

Dusker, the latest from Michigan trio KILN, infuses the entire concept of electronic composition with an almost impossible organic sense, its lush songs packed with flourishes that appear and disappear, cycling, spilling and disintegrating across the stereo field. It is an aural feast on headphones, and a perfect companion for a stroll through auburn fields. KILN have a knack for balancing heart rending melodies & progressions against rhythmic forms & textures of incredible depth, making for a richness of sound that may well be instrumental for the sole fact that words could never express as much.

They are also meticulous manipulators of their instruments; while guitars, drum kits and live percussion appear on many tracks, the ear will struggle to pinpoint the possible sources of the unique sounds comprising Dusker. Despite a penchant for mystery, though – the band themselves are highly private, write in their own dialect and never play live – one is drawn into a placid realm of womblike softnesses and hazy warmth, entranced and engaged at every shift by a wealth of beautiful sounds that elevate their human, natural and electronic foundations equally.

Having quietly staked out their musical territory for more than a decade, KILN describe their evolved orchestrations as “Dusken texture-groove-mosaics…an active, electrified space that employs plenty of float, but without the drift”. The underlying complexities and fully formed environs of each piece come from lengthy germinations and reconfigurations, born from a compositional method that involves sound file exchange and constant modification. It is this emphasis on a wholly natural process – both in inspiration and execution – that separates KILN from their peers, and makes Dusker one of the most original statements in electronic music in some time.

That worked just fine. Thanks Avec. Being away from the board for a long time I forget that this might well be one of the best threads ever. Nice work by everyone in here.

These came in the mail from Mr. Kranky yesterday

They both sound fantastic.

However, I am really tired of Kranky's packaging as of lately. They've been going nearly all digipack. And the sleeves are all cardboard. The cd is tucked into a cardboard sleeve in the digipack. Just taking it out I am afraid I will scratch it. Usually I just take it out of the package once and then put it in a seperate Jewel case. Even then I have to keep track of the cd's because sometimes there isn't even a label on the disc itself, lol.

Now if they were like this I wouldn't complain

Machinefabriek - Bijeen

Label:Kning Disk
Format:CD,Compilation,Limited Edition
Country:Sweden
Released:Nov 2007
Genre:Electronic
Style:Modern Classical,Drone,Ambient,Experimental
Notes:Total time:1:04:06

Tracklisting:

1 - Borghesia Remix (6:43)
2 - Piano.wav (5:25)
3 - Havelaar (8:37)
4 - Reglyph (3:10)
5 - Dahl (10:50)
6 - Verdrinkwater (3:17)
7 - Weightless Remix (6:45)
8 - Licht (19:18)

REVIEW:

This new album Bijeen (‘Together’) is on Swedish label Kning Disks, a rather obscure imprint that also has Wolf Eyes and Jazkamer’s Lasse Marhaug on its roster. The album is a collection of remixes and original compositions (noted in the subtitle ‘Gathered Eccentrics’ 2005-2007) that Zuydervelt has put together with obvious care. While Marijn is perhaps a more accessible album (many comparisons with Basinski etc), Bijeen has a full breadth of emotion despite being more of a challenge in some ways. ‘The Borghesia Remix’, for example, could be seen as a brutal opener. Beginning with a silence that makes you start checking the settings on your amp, it swells into a wall of noise that builds into a threat of collapse before disappearing suddenly, dropping back into silence. But it clears the decks and functions as an ear-cleaning for the subtle, deep textures that follow in ‘Piano_wav’.A highlight is ‘Weightless Remix’, where the acoustic melodies slowly disintegrate into unstructured static. Across the album, the cycles are perfectly paced and surprisingly dynamic – it’s the perfect antidote to the relentless beats that implanted themselves in your brain the night before.Bijeen may not be the easiest or most logical point of entry into the Machinefabriek world, but it’s an engaging excursion across the beatless borders into noise, drone, static and circuit-breaking electronics.

Pjusk
Sart
(12k; 2007)

Rating: 73%
Combined Rating: N/A

I wouldn't exactly call it funky, but Pjusk's Sart, in a similar fashion to Phonophani's incredible self-titled debut (1998), is one more step in the conversion of 1994’s Selected Ambient Works II’s austere minimalism to something of richer, deeper tones (you know, without that scratchy feeling). But also something of nearly equal compositional integrity. In other words, it seems a lot less self-consciously involved with Terry Riley or Karlheinz Stockhausen than Aphex Twin's more subdued material; it just wants to trip you out as much as anything. Still, I'm sure some would consider it something of a dry experiment: it moves at a funereal pace, its beats are strictly minimal and never move with what you'd really call momentum. The insular universe of Sart is well worth the investment, though, and for every out excursion you get something as immediately gratifying as the deep bass hum (which makes me wish I had good subwoofers) of "Flyktig," literally vibrating your body while haunting synths and almost-imperceptible tweaks dance in and out of your grasp. It's like listening to anything else on the 12k label (the project of master microsound artist/photographer/designer Taylor Deupree) while getting a Shiatsu massage.

The range of tones present give Sart a warm, insular feeling -- a nice alternative to the colder textures that most other Norwegian experimental acts offer -- but for something so dense in terms of an overall range of sounds, it also feels remarkably light. The bass tones, rather than grounding out the tracks, serve to briefly illuminate a sense of form and shape, only to retreat back into the shadows. In this sense, Pjusk deal in the language of dreams, making music that consistently evades meaning. For every tactile glitch, the music draws your attention to the negative space around it, creating faint impressions rather than concrete sounds. Even the taut two-note synth that loops throughout the first half of "Myk" is subtly tweaked to create the sensation of being closer or further away from the source, the spray of gentle overtones giving the impression that the solid notes are slowly dissolving in water.

Elsewhere, tracks like "Kontur" and "Rav" -- where the synth loops and low-end rhythm are abandoned all together -- are nearly maddening in their sense of distance and lack of discernible melody. I can accept that this is part of the point, however: these tracks manage to be hypnotic without ever really announcing themselves, which makes sense given the overwhelming sensation that Sart works on a subconscious level. Still, I prefer tracks like "Anelse" or "Rom" in which, much like Gas, Pjusk play with simple loops and 4/4 beats without ever sounding remotely like techno music. Unlike Gas, however, the beats fade intermittently into free-form ambience; the tracks constantly shifting in unpredictable ways and never really settle. The fact that there's little to ground any of these tracks puts Pjusk in danger of chasing their own music down a rabbit hole, sure, but it's never very boring, which is kind of a marvel in itself.

Wow, I just gave Supersilent 8 a listen for the first time last night, in my bed, in the dark, with my earphones on. Holy crap, what an experience! By track 2 I was literally getting some serious shocks with those wierd pulsating bass sounds coming in at random.

Have to say, I'm not really sure if I like it or not. I do know that I want more though.

I wanted to like that Supersilent album. Maybe the files I downloaded were bad? It just sounded so flat and quiet. I turned it up louder than almost anything I've dared to play while living here and it still just sort of hung there, not doing anything, if that makes any sense at all.

It's the first thing I've heard from them. Maybe it wasn't the best place to start? Will keep giving it another chance since so many people here like it.
Pavement Ist Rad
Perhaps it was a bad copy. Although, the dynamic range on the album is pretty massive. A whole lot of it comes close to genuine SUPERSILENCE, yes. But then there are the all out noise explosions.

"Flat and quiet," though. Hmm.

Also, have any of you ever listened to my old group Banisteriopsis? I think Undo and a few others may have, but in any case I plan on using this thread to dump some of our better material on you guys.

funny story: a few years ago we had taken acid for the first time in a while and had La Selva playing on the computer speakers and Banisteriopsis playing on the stereo speakers. The room became the rain forest.

Here is Laputa. It's not my link. I actually prefer it to Sakura. It's somewhat FSOL-ish as opposed to calm "Japanese sounding" ambience. There are some moments on Sakura that make me feel like I am floating on cloads, or moving through my own mind though.

I've got a real soft spot for Grinning Cat. Listened to it loads when recovering from a bike crash. Whenever I listen to it now it brings back memories of lying in a hospital bed, flitting between numbed, detached "real"ities and immersive opiate-dappled dreams.
Strangely, fond memories

Listened to Sakura, Laputa and other stuff while traveling around Nippon last autumn. Not surprisingly, they fit like a glove. Listening to Laputa during a nocturnal drive from Osaka to Tokyo was particularly inspired. The continuous conurbation streaming either side of us seemed to be mapping out the music, like a neon-on-black score.

Nah, not that I know of. They're both on different labels. Their music is very different, too. Nilsen is more into exploring sound, Jasper TX's stuff has a lot of elements of "post rock" in it (chiming guitars, keyboard melodies).

I've been digging Kids Indestructible for a few years now. They used to be (still are?) on Gooom Disques, the label that M83 started out on. I don't know what Gooom is really doing now, their website is kind of dead even though they've still got artists releasing music. It's kind of frustrating and I imagine it has to be for all the other bands, since they were seemed so tightly-knit a few years ago, collaborating and remixing each other quite often.

The Lonely End of the Dance Floor thread really doesn't dig this kind of stuff: too close to "electronica," no traces of house, funk, or deep techno, either. Most of what they do isn't really ambient but I've been wanting to see what others here would think of them for a while, and this thread seems like the best place to do it. Great electronic pop, but they do some great ambient pieces as well.

http://burningsled.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html -- something I wrote about them a year ago.
http://www.cokemachineglow.com/reviews/kids_express2004.html -- a good review of their only album, which doesn't seem to be available in America.

They have some songs streaming at Last.fm and on their myspace page. I'd link 'em to here if I could but I don't think I can.
http://www.myspace.com/kidsindestructible -- (recommended: "End of the Pier," "Trans Pennine Express")
http://www.last.fm/music/Kids+indestructible -- (recommended: "Space Harvester")

I think they're still doing gigs in the UK, so I'm still holding out hope to hear more music from them someday. But 4 years in between releases is a really long time these days, and whether or not they really want to go through the motions to become a Pitchfork/Vice-approved "hip" group (as is necessary these days to get a record deal or any press) just to claw their way back to "buzz band" status or whatever is anyone's guess.

Just wanted to share, hope someone gives them a listen.

I really hope this gets some attention because it's really quite stunning. I would classify it at ambient/pop/folk. a beautiful mixture of melody, softness, and warmth. If you are looking for heavy white noise and electronic manipulation, it won't be found here.

Fans of RadicalFashion, and the calmer moments of both Feel Good Lost (BSS) and Campfire Songs (AC) should adore this album.

I don't "push" albums very often but after just two listens, this will be getting played for the rest of the year, especially on those cool, drizzling summer nights.

Motion -- Dust

Dust is the second full-length release by Motion (UK artist Chris Coode). Like most 12k releases, it is a work of intricate, delicate murmurs. And, like most 12k releases, the music here blurs the lines between digital noise and organic tones, as though the artists working through this label are seeking a way to de-digitalize digital signal processing, to create something that resembles the sounds of everyday life without actually being everyday life. This is true with artists such as Taylor Deupree, Sogar, and Shuttle358, and it is also true with Coode. The difference between Coode and other 12k artists is that, rather than examining the sounds of cities or other human habitations, Dust focuses almost exclusively on creating a natural world out of digital scraps.

Thank you so much for these recommendations. Are Bowery Electric like Orb?

I Like Orb. I also like Brian Eno and Berlin dubtechno and Terry Riley.

This is a great thread.

Bowery Electric's debut came out in 1995, ebbing off the tide of the 'shoegaze' movement. They were primarily a duo (female bassist/singer and guitarist) with fill in drummers, and later abandoned drummers for electronic machines. The first album is great, the guitar is just a wall of massive drone. Just a couple of spacemen making psych in a garage. Highly recommended if you are a shoegaze fan. No one does stuff like this anymore and it makes me sad.

Their second album, Beat, is a highly minimal response to the Trip Hop thing that was all the fad at the time of release. And their third, Lushlife builds on that with more orchestrated sounds.

I have no idea if they are still together, on hiatus or planning on doing anything in the future.

I'm just coming around to this guy's genius about now. It took me a long time to warm up to Sakura for some reason. Now I can't wait to pick up Grinning Cat, Boy and the Tree, and give his latest another spin.

Here is a retrospective of his work that just came out:
Susumu Yokota: The Skintone Collection

Boomkat: "Lo Recordings serve up Skintone Collection; the 32nd release (!) from the fiercely creative Yokota, a fully-rounded retrospective of his large body of work over the past ten years. Comprising choice cuts from giants such as 2000's Sakura through to this years Love or Die, Ben Eshmade's sensitively-compiled fourteen track disc is both a perfect introduction to Yokota for the uninitiated and a necessary indulgence for established followers."

That Jelinek record is killer. Let me just say that I have mostly favored guitar music all my life, but that record totally turned me onto minimal electronic beats and stuff. It happened while I was living in Germany and there was a music channel which actually showed a video from that disc. So good. I love listening to it late at night while I'm just spacing out. First of all, until reading it in your post, I thought the title of the album was 'Komischer Pitch'. Ah blissful years of ignorance.

Loop Finding Etc is much more minimal than KP. I think what I love about it is that I really lose track of time while listening because the tracks are all kind of similar. Loads of skip and pop sounds.
