I enjoy the Emeralds s/t, but nothing they've done has managed to knock me on my ass like the first track on Solar Bridge did and continues to do.

ftr.

Passing Away on the new one does that for me. On the record it's got Side B to itself. Must have spun it 4 times in a row last night. That said, Solar Bridge was pretty stunning, think I’ll return to it when I'm out on my rounds later today.
Liffey
Hecq - Steeltongued is my favorite ambient of the year so far, with Ametsub - The Nothings of the North a close second. Really enjoyed Giuseppe Ielasi - Aix as well. Need to listen to Emeralds and William Basiniski still.

I love the new White Rainbow disc, New Clouds. Just some gorgeous, psychedelic (lol montana) sounds.

I love almost everything Adam Forkner touches, but for some reason could not get into the last White Rainbow, is this any different from the first?

nah it's pretty similar to the first one. longer tracks though, so i guess he develops more of a groove.

Here it is dudes, the Leyland Kirby Money Shot
20 tracks, over 400mb and just under 4hrs playtime.......

All we need now is a couple of years to digest it.

Still cant seem to find a way to purchase the 3rd installment.

It's not been released yet. Next couple of weeks probably. Part 2 was about two weeks late.

Nice to have the whole thing digital now so I can take it out on the move.

Cool, good to know. His website still said a release of 10/3, so I was marginally worried.

I ordered them through Forced Exposure a couple days ago.
https://www.forcedexposure.com/artists/kirby.leyland.html

It is a bit odd, since their own description states that the first LP sold out within a week...and yet its still available. But in any case, I got the goods and the shipping was super quick.

Yeah I've ordered from them before, though I felt shipping was overpriced ($4.50 even if you just order a CD). I'll probably grab those 2 still.

I forgot what a great album this is.

Between the early autumn chill and overcast/rainy weather...its really fitting the mood.

That new Loscil is great. I'm not sure if it's just because it's "about" Vancouver, but it's some beautiful ambient music, "Union Dusk" especially. Beautiful cover art as well.

What's up guys. Long time no see eh?

I'm really liking The Setting Sun from Fjordne. Reminds me a bit of Radio Amour but with a heavier focus on patience. The melodies are nicely disjointed, sad, and work very nicely.

I picked up a copy of Mountains' Etching today. Absolutely stunning release. Some of their best work, and even more remarkable is the fact that the entire thing was composed live on the spot. Get em while they're hot..very limited press of 1,000, and the LP covers are hand-stamped making each entirely unique.

There was some talk about one Aidan Baker in this thread, a while back. Has anybody else heard this, his new-ish Gathering Blue?

I'm enjoying it quite a bit, for ostensibly an odds-and-ends compilation. It has a few new pieces, covers, remixes, etc.. There's for some reason a tremendous reinterpretation of Joy Division's "Twenty Four Hours" on here, too. Has to be heard. In all honesty, I'm a bit confused about just what this thing wants or even was intended to be, but whatever. Sounds good enough for me not to worry about it.

Often shimmering, pastoral, and sublime, you should know that it also relies on vocals and even beats, in some places. It's not exactly your father's ambient, and the record accordingly lacks cohesion...but it is all the same very engaging and hauntingly beautiful. I'm enjoying the shit out of it, and it can be found pretty easily, on the internet. Probably a good idea to try this one, before buying it. I, though, have few reservations.

i really like the stuff that sort of straddles new age music. that sort of meditative, half asleep tone that takes you to really bizarre places

stars of the lid and gas do it incredibly - i have yet to find anything quite as good as tired sounds or zauberberg/pop/gas/konigsforst.

everyone should check this next album out. especially those that like some zen and melody in their ambient
it's eating by takagi masakatsu. i've posted it before but i feel i should post it again. it's one of my favorite recordings. it has the ability to transport me to long forgotten memories and strange but familiar places in space and time. you probably haven't heard it before, and barely anyone pays this artist any attention, but this thing is incredible. enjoy. and if you play it a few times and don't care for it too much, play it again in a month or two.

I've found the more and more ambient music I listen to, the less and less I'm able to properly write about/describe it.

So, here's some shit that I done like a bunch. (None of which are my links, just ones I found)

Eluvium - An Accidental Memory In Case of Death: Copia was the first Eluvium album I ever heard and it's still my favourite, but this one gets a lot of spins in my stereo. It's a bit of a departure for Matthew Cooper: solo piano with few (any?) electornic/synthesizer/atmospheric flourishes.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=R91X8FY3

m83 - Digital Shades Volume 1: m83 guy's ambient side project, still under the name m83. His Eno-worship is very obvious, but it's a nice quick listen. By quick, I mean, by ambient standards, quick, not most people's.

http://www.mediafire.com/?e54vydm0mlj

Brian Eno, Roger Eno & Daniel Lanois - Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks: Blasphemy, I know, but this is my favourite Eno: a soundtrack he created for the Apollo moon-landing. Just staggeringly beautiful. 'An Ending: Ascent' sounds like finding the meaning of life while out for a stroll in the park.

Nah, this is exactly what I want out of my Eno. Quiet, synthy spacescapes. Not noodling around for forty minutes only to get nowhere.

I like this quote from the allmusic review

QUOTE
An exquisite experiment... The recording engulfs the listener and captures the feel of space travel, weightlessness, and other sensations vividly. It's also perhaps Eno's warmest record ever.

I said my opinion was blasphemy. To me, there's no better Eno ambient album. None.

Not sure what it is, after having completely ignored experimental sounds for the last 10 years I suddenly can't get enough.

This discussion happened a few weeks ago, but I wanted to advocate On Land as his best.

Ambient music for me lately has consisted of John Cage and Kevin Drumm.

In a Landscape is good for beginners to John Cage.

Music of Changes, Roaratorio, Imaginary Landscapes, and Prepared Piano Preludes + Sonatas are all essential.

it doesn't sound ambient, but it seems to work like ambient music

Morton Feldman is probably the top dollar for me recently. The piano and string quartet performed by the Kronos Quartet is great, as is the Rothko Chapel recording I have.

that's a fantastic album. i could favor it over The Pearl, although Pearl does take the atmospherics to another level.

some of harold budd's stuff on his own is great as well. there's something about The Serpent (In Quicksilver) that I love.

In all seriousness, these are steadily becoming my favourite ever ambient recordings. I've lost count of the number of hours/days I've spent wandering around London listening to them so far this autumn/winter. Anybody who has gone through the various stages associated with heartbreak/loss/bereavement can’t fail to be affected by this work. For all the raw bleakness in the first two-thirds there is some real redemption/atonement in the final pieces. At some point, I'd like to attempt to properly articulate my love of this stuff but right now, even after a few months of intensive listening, I’m still just at the feeling stage.

Edit: The three LPs are in vinyl frames, looming over my bed and I usually have one on as I drift off - think I might be developing a habit

Speaking of soundtracks, I pretty much listened to nothing but Aloof Proof's Piano Text while reading Cormac McCarthy's The Road, and the two are now inextricably linked in my mind.

BTW, for those looking for the Leyland releases, Forced Exposure still has all of them in stock. Although it sounds like these sold incredibly well in the UK and that they're impossible to find over there, at least based on what KL has written on his blog.

Piano Text is fantastic, one of my favorite ambient releases (re-release, I know) of the decade. Good choice there.

And yes, I can read books and listen to music, as long as it fits the mood and does not have vocals. At work (reading mail, etc) I can listen to any kind of music and it doesn't interfere at all.

well, you're close to the summit there! those are two of my favorites. very few people who enjoy this form of music would argue that Aphex recording is not perfection, and with eno, you'll just get arguments about which of his ambient recordings are the best.

if you have the notion pick up the Reinbert de Leeuw version of Satie. very slow and dreamy, also sounds like it's recorded in some old victorian mansion or something.

here's some other good stuff, imo. each of them very different from one another oddly enough

stars of the lid (obviously) refinement, tired sounds
steve roach - structures from silence, mystic chords
kevin drumm - imperial distortion
aloof proof - piano text
lustmord - place where the black stars hang
tim hecker - harmony in ultraviolet

that's just a few that i like. ask any other ambient fan and i'm sure there'd be a completely different list

You know, I'll come out and say it (in regards to avec's post). I love most of Aphex Twin's music, and I love ambient, but Selected Ambient Works Vol. II does almost nothing for me. I don't hate it, and I listen to it occassionally, but it is one of the few ambient works that I almost always let be "just background music." Most ambient stuff pulls me in, but Vol. II really is just audio wallpaper.

disagree entirely, the opening trilogy of "cliff," "radiator," and "rhubarb" is nothing short of sublime. "blur" and "weathered stone" are nice stand alone tracks in themselves. the second disc has it's merits as well.

surprised that you would be a fan of aphex twin as well as ambient as a genre but not like this. stranger things have happened i suppose, to each his own.

Actually, I kind of agree with Phil. I've owned 'Selected Ambient...II' for about 10 years now, and have probably only listened to it all the way through once or twice. Though I do really enjoy the opening trilogy mentioned above by plaidisrad, the album never really sustains my interest past that point. It's always the same thing: I put it on, I go "Wow, this is incredible", and an hour later I'm going "Wait, is this the same CD or did it end a while back?" and I'm completely un-engaged.

"Rhubarb" is undeniably killer. I just put the whole album on again, and I think the main problem with the album is a real lack of unity amongst the tracks. Other than "muted" songs, I feel as if the album just does not gel together, as sounds don't quite link.

Maybe I have yet to just fully appreciate the album. But it's a very strange album to say the least.
