My only complaint at this point is that the computer cheats a bit. It's able to put together these huge strings of extra turns and I never get as many opportunities like that. It's like it knows what's coming next, which makes sense, but is an unfair advantage.

You can tell when it's coming, too. There will be a supremely obvious attack opportunity, but the computer will skip it to do something else, instead. But by doing that move, the perfect tiles (gems? whatevers?) will drop, earning him an extra turn. Then it'll use the obvious attack; or string together a couple more extra turns.

I've been putting off this boss battle for the last five hours or so. At one point, he managed to take 10 fucking turns in a row, taking 100hp off of my bar in the process.

I want to play Cooking Mama.

My friend bought it last Wednesday and thinks it's pretty great. I definitely am hoping to do some cooking this weekend if I get the chance.

Just bought this. Normally, that sounds like an awful idea, but it was $12.99. So, uh, yeah. I feel okay about it. Also ordered the LCD Soundsystem disc and got free shipping from Amazon. So... win-win.

And I'm in Santa Monica right now! Hoorah!

Olympic games have been awful for so long... only the dual powers of Mario and Sonic could possible save it.

...unless Sega develops it.

I'm surprised Miyamoto or anyone even thinks thats somewhat close. Sonic is faster, obviously. "Who's got the better high jump?", that's the real question.

It will be the first "sports" game i've purchased in sixteen years since I bought "Ice Hockey" for the NES for fifty cents at a garage sale down the street from my old house.

The game could be called "Sonic and Mario Eat Dog Shit" and I would still buy it the day it came out.

Isn't Sonic also going to be in Super Smash Bros?

I got my N64 this week from half.com for about $35 (that includes S&H). Came with two controllers, all the cables, an expansion pak, a controller pak and three games. It's also in great shape too. Those three games are.

Pro Skater is kinda frustrating because I haven't figured out how to not bail on most of my tricks.

Pokemon Snap is surprisingly addictive so far, but I don't know how much replay value it will have once I've finished it.

And what else can be said about Perfect Dark that hasn't been said? I've really been on a FPS kick lately with Metroid Prime and Red Steel. I'm gonna try to finish those games before I get too deep in to Perfect Dark.

Sorry I haven't read through this thread because I'm sure this has been discussed--but where are the best deals online for PS2?

Thanks!

for, like, systems or games?

either one, i would answer Ebay, but that's an uneducated answer.

i remember back when i rented Perfect Dark right when it came out. I went to my local Blockbuster and was like "do you guys have the expansion pack thing that comes with the game?" and they were all like "no, we don't." My response was "Well, don't you need it to play the game" and they said "no, you'll be fine." So I took the game home, put it in, and because I didn't have that expansion pack, I could not play. I went back there and told them I want the pack or my money back. They would not do either. So like the child I was, I went home and bitched to my mom, who then went to Blockbuster with me and got in to a huge fight with some big, burly African American manager. The story concluded with them not giving me my money back, me throwing a magazine on the floor, and my mom cancelling our Blockbuster membership, vowing never to rent from there again.

Flash forward approximately six years in to the future, when I become a Blockbuster Video employee at that same location, and remain that way for three years. Good times.
Andyroo
I remember the back of the box detailing what you could or could not play without the Expansion Pak, and it was so incredibly crippled without that they should have just required the Pak altogether (like Donkey Kong 64).

Anyway, I never really bothered to play it. I thought it looked like ass, even with the Pak.
Midnite_Vulture
I should be getting WWF No Mercy in the mail any day now. Production will be at all-time lows.
Undercooked Sausage
You couldn't play single player without the expansion pack, lolz.

Perfect Dark still kicked ass though. I'm pretty sure the N64 might've been the greatest system ever had Nintendo not pissed off third party developers and/or use a cartridge format.

this came out on the VC today. i've been spending too much on VC games, but i've been waiting for this one. yee haw.
Andyroo
I've already played so much Star Fox 64 in my life... I don't think I'd play more than a few minutes of it if I bought it on VC. Definitely a classic, though.

Looks like I'm headed back to Cali next week. After a two-night jaunt in Santa Monica last week to check out Activision games, I'll be in the Bay Area next week for four nights for Capcom and Vivendi events (and maybe an Athletics game, if there's time). I'm secretly hoping for Resident Evil 5 to be shown/playable...
shimmy
have fun while you're visiting, it's a good time to be in the bay area weather wise....

I'm trying to get a job at Double Fine right now in the downtown area.....Sega wasn't all that great so maybe this will be an improvement.

Oh and I'm SUPER hype about Mass Effect coming out on June 5th. (hopefully)
really wanna play that on the 'ol 50" 1080p 7.1 !! looks epic..

What's the next step after Guitar Hero? Rock Band!
QUOTE
You know, a lot of the time, when I hear about a new game, I get "excited". It's a relative term, and one I normally use only in the context of gaming news. As in, I am more excited about this game than I am about other games. But this...this has me shitting kittens.

Harmonix, EA & MTV are teaming up to bring us Rock Band on 360 & PS3. Harmonix co-founder Alex Rigopulos:

QUOTE
[Rock Band] takes the core premise of Guitar Hero and expands it tenfold. It lets you create a complete collaborative band.

What? How? It comes with 4 peripherals. Two guitars (lead & bass), a mic and a drum kit. So great. But wait. There's more. Because there's some serious financial clout behind this little venture, no more cover bands. It's going to feature the real deal. And not just the real deal: some record labels are already planning to release new content ( you know...songs) via this game, rather than radio or the internet.

No word on the individual songs, but we've got some artists: Allman Brothers, Joan Jett, Kansas, Nirvana and Wolfmother. Rigopulos says "We'll be covering a great breadth, from metal to classic rock to Southern rock to everything in between".

The game will be disc-based, but will also feature further downloadable content. And, as an extra treat, it'll feature online play. EA's David DeMartini says "You could have one guitarist in Germany and another one in Texas, a drummer in New York and a singer from somewhere else, and they can play together online".

OK, who's NOT freaking out about this? In case you can't do the math, this is SingStar and Guitar Hero, together, and will surely take over the entire planet. Nobody is safe. Unless EA can find some way to mess things up...or it ends up costing $200...Luke Plunkett

The Guitar controller is supposed to be compatible with the XBox' GHII controllers, so you won't have to buy a new guitar.

I just read an article that said they're going to release Effects Boxes for GHII?

I'm still looking for a picture of the drum set.

Played a couple of hours last night. Lots of fun, as expected. The switching from 2D to 3D gameplay mechanic, and art direction in general, is pure genius.

However, I'm not completely sold yet that getting rid of the turn based battles is a completely good thing. I thought the last Paper Mario was one of the best games on the Gamecube. A great RPG, with a simple but very strategic battle system, with action elements, and a badge/leveling system that allowed for real character development. Most traditional RPGs are not nearly as much fun to play as Paper Mario was.

Super Paper Mario is a combo platformer/RPG that might not be as much fun and challenging as a true platformer, or as strategic as a true RPG. Like all recenent Nintendo games, is starts really slowly and is very easy at the beginning. Hopefully the challenge will increase a bit.

I have not doubt it's going to be lots of fun and totally worth playing. Not certain at all, yet, whether this is a true home run or not.
Andyroo
I'll be picking that up at some point. Not sure when... I've got an assload of work on my plate for the next couple weeks.

I spent several hours at the Sierra/Vivendi press event yesterday. I can't talk about everything I played/saw just yet, but I got to check out TimeShift for Xbox 360, PC, and (probably) PS3. Forget everything you've seen about it before. I didn't get to play it, but I watched a guy play it for a while and it's a night-and-day difference. It looks almost as good as Gears and has some cool physics and weather effects.

I told myself I wouldn't get Paper Mario until I finished Zelda. I know, I'm frigging behind. I got to the end second to last dungeon, and I haven't gotten around to finishing it. I always lose steam near the end of long games. Hopefully I can find a copy of SPM on the weekend.
Andyroo
To my shock and amusement, companies still release new arcade games in America. I went sent off to a last-minute press gathering at a small bar in San Francisco tonight where we were shown The Fast and the Furious Drift and Big Buck Hunter Pro.

Drift plays (and looks) like the latest iteration in the long-dormant Cruisin' series, albeit six years too late. But it was a blast in small doses, and I was dominating the competition. Buck is an amusing shotgun-based hunting game; nothing special there, but it's fun. We did a "tournament" (it was really more of a "who can get the best score in one attempt" thing) and I finished third of eight or nine peeps. No prize. Lame.

Tomorrow: Capcom Gamers Day. I'm praying, praying for some footage of Dead Rising 2, even though they stated it would not be mentioned. An extended view of Resident Evil 5 would make up for its absence...

I'm still in serious debate over Super Paper Mario. Never played any of the series before, so if anybody else who's bought it has opinions, please do post them.

I'll probably open mine tomorrow and maybe post some opinions then.

i rented Paper Mario. So far, after one "chapter," the game is pretty simple, but still fun in a Mario kind of way. Switching from 2-d to 3-d is easy and adds some "searching" elements to the game. If you are looking for it to be an RPG, though, it's really not at all. Nothing about the game has an RPG feel other than leveling up and buying items. Other than that, it's a pretty basic platformer game, but it's a lot of fun, none the less.

super paper mario is a lot of fun, but you have to play as mario more often then i would have preferred, and the difficulty at the end of the game is about teh same as it was at teh beginning. looks beautiful, though.
HewlettsDaughter
yeah graphically paper mario surprised me with how everything looked. despite its simplistic look, it really is gorgeous. and the switching from 2-d to 3-d is absolutely beautiful and seemless.
Tracy Jacks
I'm on the fifth world in Super Paper Mario and am liking the game less and less.

The level design in the game is not good. Lots of backtracking. Use of passwords, which were tedious years ago. Annoying mazes. Even the 2D-3D changing is not used much. You often enter rooms with out any need to do the 2D-3D switch.

The fourth world, the space world, was completely tedious.

There are tons of items in the game, yet the bad guys rarely give up items. There are 256 cards to collect in the game, yet I'm over half way through the game with only 20 or so cards. Seems like both the cards and the recipes were added to artificially lengthen the gametime.

Game remains way too easy.

I enjoyed the last Paper Mario MUCH more.
Undercooked Sausage
Yeah, Super Paper Mario is too slow-paced for me. It tries to capture a lot of video game genres at the same time but ultimately is the master of none.

I'm on the fifth world too, the space world was terrible, you just floated around killing pointlessly simple monsters. The games far too slow-paced for a Mario game, and there's too much backtracking. Pretty flawed game design when there is noticeable(and constant) backtracking.

I still like it though, because it's Mario, but eh. The 2-d/3-d switching is kinda awkward and breaks up the pacing. Also, i just wanna play as Mario, not Bowser/Peach, because Mario is my boy.
