Been playing Rez again, on account of I got a new LCD telly and wanted to see the gorgeousness on it. Only thing is the telly lacks stereo outs, so I'm not getting the full effect. And the game isn't widescreen.

Still, it's pretty much the best thing on PS2, so it's all good.

I'm gutted that Unity got cancelled, because that had very similar potential. It was gonna be a GC shooter, but was so psychedelic that the engine ended up being used for the 360 CD replay visuals.

Have you played Frequency? Rhythm based (the precursor to Guitar Hero) and similarly awesome.

A kid from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn wandered the underbelly of New York. He had found the derelict chamber known as the "Warp Zone" pretty quickly. The map left by his uncle Luigi made the sewer system easy to navigate. The inscriptions on the pipes were vague. What was world 1-1? He found out soon enough. The Warp dropped him off in a strange landscape overrun with toadstools (some of them sentient). An entire microverse existing perpendicular to New York. Now all he had to do was follow Luigi's instructions. Climb the stairs at the far end of the world, jump off the top and tag the flag in front of the castle. It sounded simple enough. But was it?

Amplitude (the pseudo-sequel to Frequency) was better. Both came from the eventual developer of Guitar Hero.

Yeah, Super Paper Mario is too slow-paced for me. It tries to capture a lot of video game genres at the same time but ultimately is the master of none.

I'm on the fifth world too, the space world was terrible, you just floated around killing pointlessly simple monsters. The games far too slow-paced for a Mario game, and there's too much backtracking. Pretty flawed game design when there is noticeable(and constant) backtracking.

I still like it though, because it's Mario, but eh. The 2-d/3-d switching is kinda awkward and breaks up the pacing. Also, i just wanna play as Mario, not Bowser/Peach, because Mario is my boy.

Yeah, I kinda agree. SPM is a confused little thing, trying to platform with all the RPG knick knacks included. I HATE having to go to a menu to switch out characters because I have to reach a high ledge, or light torches, etc. Another thing that bugged me is that there is way too much text. The text, while entertaining at first, gets lame, and eventually the whole story becomes predictable. I think it's very funny, very cleaver(the third world and all the internet/geek references is classic), but I can't take the game seriously when it wants to be taken seriously. It's pretty short too, it took me less than a week to get to the end, but I guess I can look for all the items, and all the Pixls. Despite all that, I still enjoy playing it because switching from 2D to 3D is sick. It's a neat little element of the game.
Andyroo
Oh, how I've missed this meager gaming discussion in my life.

I've had a tough time getting into Super Paper Mario. I fear that I'll be tempted to eBay it if I don't start playing more in the next couple weeks.

The only thing I've been playing is Guitar Hero II for Xbox 360. I just beat the game on Hard a few minutes ago, which is something I never bothered to do with any of the previous releases. I doubt I could get very deep in Expert, though.

I think you should. After Paper Mario, there won't be any Wii games worth playing for awhile, so enjoy it while it lasts. Meanwhile, I'm planning for the Wii drought with a 36o, or a PS3 purchase. I don't know which one though. That red ring of death scares me from buying a 360, but they're gonna have most of PS3's "exclusives" now, so I might just take a chance.
Andyroo
Of the two, I'd wholeheartedly recommend the Xbox 360. I've had mine since the launch date, and I've never seen the red rings of death or had a significant issue. Mine will overheat after a few hours of play, but I rarely play in excess of a couple hours per session.

If I didn't need a PlayStation 3 for professional reasons, I doubt I would have bought one until later this year. So far, the only must-have exclusives (imo) have been Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm. Virtua Fighter 5 is really good, but it's hardly a significant upgrade over VF4: Evolution. Ridge Racer 7 is pretty good, but it's the same thing -- it's just a repackaged version of RR6.

The Xbox 360 has so much going for it in terms of game selection and the online service. At this point in time, it's a no-brainer compared to the PS3.

I have been playing The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, for Gamecube. I tried it initially back in the day and got stuck (I suck at Zelda puzzles, especially when it turns out to be a formation one. I am improving). Decided to give it another go, and I love it. The episodic structure was a tad weird at first (getting powered down when starting a new level), but I have got used to that. I absolutely love the aesthetic of the game, as 16 bit is my favourite era, and this is a beautiful update of that. Flowing water is especially gorgeous.
Asher Ford
Besides Goldeneye on the N64, Zelda Four Swords Gamecube is the best multiplayer game I've ever seen.

Also bought Cooking Mama last week, which is going to be a fun game to pick up every few weeks for twenty minutes or so. Not a game I'm going to work hard at beating though.

Got Pokemon Pearl on Sunday and I'm hooked all over again. The new pokemon are mostly horrible, so my team consists mainly of old standards (desperately trying to get my Ponyta to evolve). Trying to rush through the storyline so I can get to that Pal Park thing and attempt to finally get all 486 of these blasted creatures.
Tracy Jacks

Diamond for me. 2nd gym badge in hand.

Super Paper Mario keeps pissing me off so I see myself playing this a bunch. I thought the Space World in SPM was bad, but the start of the 6th world seems intentionally designed to piss you off. The laziness of the level design in SPM is pretty shocking. I'm willing to call SPM a bad game now.
Andyroo
I'm tempted to pick one of those up, but I'm not sure I can justify the investment right now. I've got plenty to do and play, and I'm not a huge series fan. I've owned Pokemon Blue and Pokemon Ruby in my life, but those were lifetimes ago. I know Circuit City has it on sale this week, so I'm not counting it out. I'll be hanging out with a friend tonight who owns (and loves) it, so I'll see if I can spend a few minutes with it.

If I don't buy it soon, I'm sure it'll be a consideration the next time I head out on a travel assignment.
Asher Ford
I finally beat the second gym this afternoon, after six hours of gametime. Training my Prinplup (are these names getting more absurd?) to level 28 ahead of time was almost no use, hopefully I'll be able to brush through the rest of the gyms now though.

Everything you said is true. Even VF 5 is coming to the 360 anyway, and I'm a big VF guy. I just wish I didn't buy xbox one right when they announced the 360. I think I've been really bitter about that, but you're right. 360 the better system right now, and the PS3 exclusives aren't enough to get me excited enough to get one. I've never been a big Metal Gear guy, and I've lost the Final Fantasy fanboy inside of me(besides, I can get some sort of FF experience on another console). Hopefully when the "Elite" system launches, some people will be getting rid of their inferior cream colored 360's for cheap, so I can pick me up one of those. I've been itching to play Crackdown, and Gears, and I'm looking forward to Mass Effect and Halo 3. Thank you for the input.

Hey, for those of you who don't know. I am a big omni-faggot nerd. I enjoy video games a lot more lately because I can play them without them criticizing the fact that I only shower once or twice a week and have parasites laying eggs in my scrotum. That said, I've been playing through a lot of "classics' lately out of nostalgia's sake.

Ran through all of em but 2, (even Lost Levels) and managed a perfect SMW run without dying and clearing all 96 gates while also finishing with 99 lives. Mario is my cock and Yoshi is my balls. I also read most of The Watchmen, I did all of this on 4/20. Some people smoke weed, I smoke Bowser's hairy nuts.

I also compiled a top 50 games of all time list just now, I think it's pretty solid. I gave up on Super Paper Mario, thinking of selling it because the game went to shit after the Dating sim boss.

Elite. Beat. Agents.

Based on your list, it doesn't look like you owned a GBA. Don't forget that that magnificant library is open to you too.

Nice list, btw. I suspect if we ever did a best games poll, there would be far more consensus than any other poll.

I did own a GBA, but it was a launch non-backlit so it was completely worthless. I downloaded and played a lot of GBA games though. The Castlevanias, the Metroids, The FF ports, and the Megaman Zero series, plus a couple of the Sonic games, and a few other gems here or there. They were all good, (Except Metroid Fusion, which was linear and boring) but not top 50-worthy.

Kirby's Super Star should've been on my list.

I'm guessing this is similar to what happened to Gunpei Yokoi, creator of modern portable gaming, (Game & Watch, Game Boy) but consequently Nintendo's only handheld "dud" (Virtual Boy) he later resigned due to shame and Nintendo treating him like crap even though they owe their sucess to him.

Maybe it hasn't been heavily publicized, but I'm sure In-house Kutaragi was taking a lot of heat for the PS3's condition right now.

Yeah, it's a bit elusive now. I actually bought the DC version in early 2002, but it was faulty so I had to return it. And they had no more in stock! Luckily I happened upon my best games trawl ever in early 2004: Ico, Rez and Frequency, 16 quid each on Buy It Now. I couldn't believe my luck - sealed and everything!

Err, in answer to your question, then, yeah. On PS2 as well. Dunno if that's Euro-only or what (dunno why it would be, but then I have Shenmue 2 on DC so anything's possible). Edge magazine said the PS2 version was slightly better, too, on account of that extra bit of hardware power. I would still like the DC version, though, on account of cool factor and shit. I also want to get an import Cosmic Smash, so make of that what you will.

Yesterday was a very, very good day. I landed both a XBOX 360 Elite and a Wii.

So hit me up for some recs on games:

Obviously LOZ:TP and Gears of War are in play. I heard Rainbow Six: Las Vegas is sweet, and I am highly intriguied by F.E.A.R for the 360. Has anybody played that one? Wasn't a fan of the horror genre, but RE4 changed that about a year ago and the demo looks sweet as hell.

What else is fun (especially for the Wii)? The wife absolutely loves that thing. She was in love with Wii Sports, and I'm picking up Wii Play today for more minigames plus the extra controller. She isn't a seasoned gamer, so a game like Zelda is probably out for her. I'm thinking Trauma Center or Raving Rabbids for a bit more sophisticated gaming experience once the Wii Sports/Wii Play novelty wears off.

I hate to say it, because I love the system, but the Wii's game lineup is terrible right now. besides Zelda and Wii Sports I don't really play anything on it lately.

That said, Warioware is hilariously goofy multiplayer, good family atmosphere game.
Super Monkey Ball is just as good as past installments, more cartoon multiplayer fun, with monkeys in balls.
Cooking Mama is supposed to be really good multiplayer on the Wii, though I've only played it on the DS (which is also very good).
And to distract yourself with the system more, use the internet channel to play sites like Wiicade.com with the Wiimote integration, there are some fun games there.
Also making celebrity Miis is addictively fun.
And I'm buying a lot more on the virtual console now, some great classic games on there.

OTM.

I've championed the system, but I've gotten more use out of my PS3 than the Wii in the past couple months. Doesn't seem like there will be much until later this year, but I'm no longer willing to buy shit games just because they're for the Wii. I'll hold out for the good stuff.

By the way, I started blogging at Bits Bytes Pixels & Sprites today.

Sam, make sure to pick up Blue Dragon on 360 when it comes out if you're an RPG guy at all. Right now, required purchases for the Wii don't really stem too much outside of Zelda, though I personally recommend Metal Slug Anthology and Sonic & The Secret Rings.

Upcoming Wii games look great though, I've been waiting over a decade for a new NiGHTS...

Wii's still selling like hotcakes, Nintendo has no reason to put out games as long as the thing is still selling.

It's evil, but it's business.
Sam
Wii is definately still hard to get. The amount of trips to various stores and internet searching my wife had to make in the weeks leading up to my birthday to nab one was unreal. People are still lining up outside of stores if the Wii is advertised and they routinely sell out instantly.

For people like me, I'm just getting into Wii Sports. Zelda is still waiting for me as is Paper Mario. Not to mention some lesser-tier reviewed games that are still probably pretty good (Rayman Raving Rabbids, WarioWare, Trauma Center, etc.)

A lot of people didn't get launch-system Wiis and are just getting on board with the system. I can see why people who have had their consoles since the beginning would want Nintendo to churn out more games, but for a lot of people its not a problem yet. It most likely won't be, because when our burn-out happens, we'll be in 3Q and all of the bigtime shit should be about to drop.

Oh yea, you've definitely got a good couple of months of entertainment with the system. Definitely pick up WarioWare, besides Zelda and Wii Sports it is the most entertaining game on the system.

I still Wii Bowl every day, and I show friends YouTube videos with the Wii, and I play Super Mario for the NES at least once a week.

Speaking of which, I've debated about Trauma Center for awhile, anybody here have an opinion on it?

I've heard consistent opinions from people I know that its in the good/very good range. Nobody has ever said its excellent, but nobody ripped it or regretted purchasing it. That kinda goes in hand with the reviews I read today. I think IGN had it rated 8.3 or something like that, and that was pretty indicative of other review sites as well. The common gripe from IGN was that it didn't have anything new and different from the DS version; that it was basically a simple port. Considering I never played the DS version, that shouldn't bother me at all.

The lack of games for the Wii is disappointing but expected. You don't begin to see really good games on any new systems until a 1 to 1 1/2 years after the launch. Look at the DS. People forget but it took a long time for really good games to come out consistenly on that system.

What is disappointing is that the Wii's marquee games have been so disappointing.

- WarioWare was a massive letdown compared to past versions. The biggest crimes was eliminating toys and not allowing multiple plays of the microgames, features that were sucessful in past versions.

- Same with Super Paper Mario. And it was supposed to be a GameCube game to begin with. Again they take away features that were sucessful in past version, namely the excellet, simple but strategic, turn based battles. The 2D to 3D change is cool, but winds up being nothing more than a gimmic. And the level design is plain atrotious.

- MarioParty was supposed to be out already, but has been delayed twice. Who knows what that means, but it scares me.

OK, there is Zelda. But I will always think of that as a Gamecube title.

The problem also extends to the DS. Recent titles likes Kirby, Warioland, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong were all overly easy and not nearly as good as previous versions. Thankfully Castlevania kicked ass. Pokemon is very good too, although that's not a Nintendo developed game.

And I look at the release schedules and there is not much out there through the summer for either the Wii or the DS. I'm not happy with Nintendo right now, even though DSs and Wiis are flying off the shelves.

I own it, and I have really enjoyed playing it. I have never played the DS version, but I hear the Wii version is better mostly because of the control(you can switch tools much easier with the nunchuck, wiimote functionality etc). It get's super hard in the later part of the game though, but that's just me. I've seen Trauma Center videos on youtube that make me feel totally embarassed because they're doing these surgeries so fast, and getting perfect rankings.

Okay, here's the Nintendo fanboy coming out of me.

Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Party, Prime 3, Strikers Charged, Pokemon, Big Brain Academy all announced for this year with Strikers and Smash Bros pretty much done. There's no way they're going to release all of these this year, that would be insane. I'd have to guess Prime 3 is going to be held back till 08. Most likely they're going to do a Mario Kart, Pikmin, Star Fox, and all those other Nintendo franchises. People gripping about third party, and software in general well...you have every reason too because the software sucks right now. After Zelda, (which is amazing and I never want to play a next gen version on a conventional controller ever again), and Paper Mario there isn't any must haves. A lot of mini game collections, comps, demos, and a shit load of ports. I am however really excited about No More Heroes(the Killer 7 team are doing this sword game), and EA's Boogie. Finally, for me personally I can catch up on games I never played like RE4, and fucking Guitar Hero(yeah, yeah I know). Plus unlike a lot of people, I am getting a lot of play out of Virtual Console particularly the Turbo Grafix-16, and Genesis games. Neo Geo games coming this summer. Give me Magician Lord as the first release, maybe Windjammers and Sengoku, and I'll be so thrilled.

I am pretty satisfied with my Wii purchase, and I'm trying to be very optomisitc about the future. For me, there is a lot to look forward to, but that doesn't mean that I think this is the best system. I've said here a bunch of times that I plan on getting another system because you really need either a 360 or a PS3 to complement the Wii. I don't want to miss out on GTA and Halo. The Wii just has to do what it does best which is focus on gameplay, and originiality, and stop being a fucking port machine. Hopefully Nintendo isn't lying, and these fresh new gaming experiences will come.

From IGN.

Promising if it winds up happening. I have a hard time believing that Mario, Smash Bros, and Metroid would all be released in Q4 in the US. This is a Japan schedule, so we may not see all of this in the US. Also Nintendo regularly delays titles given vauge release dates. Mario Party has been delayed at least twice, and by giving it a 2007 date rather than Q2, it's essentially been delayed again.

Nintendo Announces 2007 Wii Lineup

Smash Bros., Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and much more all set for release this year?
by Matt Casamassina

April 30, 2007 - Last week, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata held a conference to talk about company financials and to outline its plan for the year. At the Japan-hosted event, Iwata noted that the Big N had 45 Wii games and another 79 DS titles in development. Now, through officially released financial documents, we've gained a much deeper understanding of which titles players can look forward to this year - both in Japan and in America.

Nintendo officially states that the following games will be coming out for Wii in Japan in 2007:

Donkey Kong Taru Jet Race (DK Jet or DK Bongo Blast, US) - June 28, 2007
Wii Health Pack -- 2007
Disaster: Day of Crisis - 2007
Mario Party 8 - 2007
Project H.A.M.M.E.R. - 2007
Wii Music - 2007
Super Mario Galaxy - 2007
Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 2007
Battalion Wars II - 2007
Forever Blue - 2007
Mario Strikers Charged - 2007
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - 2007
Mario and Sonic at the Olympics - 2007

In a word, wow. The list confirms that, at least in Japan, Nintendo is planning to release all of its big Wii guns, including Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, this year. In addition, the list reaffirms that the company is underway with Wii Health Pack and Wii Music, two games destined to follow in the footsteps of the ultra-popular Wii Sports. Wii Health Pack is allegedly an exercise-focused game that rates players' health scores in the same way that Nintendo's brain titles rank brain ages. Meanwhile, Wii Music will very likely include both Wii Orchestra and Wii Drums, as demonstrated or shown at previous events, such as the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

While skeptics may argue that Nintendo carelessly listed all of its major games for 2007 without much thought, or to remain vague, it is important to note that it also made a distinction for two projects. Both Animal Crossing Wii and Hoshi no Kirby (Kirby Adventure) Wii are listed in the same documents as "TBA," or to be announced. Clearly, some separators were set for the official list and Nintendo still chose to define the majority of its Wii projects for the 2007 time frame.

Of the games listed, only four have been officially confirmed to debut this year in America. Mario Party 8 is set for May 29 in the States; Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree for June 11; Pokemon Battle Revolution for June 25; and Mario Strikers Charged for this summer. SEGA has revealed that Mario and Sonic at the Olympics will ship this year, but no specific date has been set. However, readers should remember that titles like Metroid Prime 3 are set for 2007 in Japan and these games have always shipped in America first, suggesting that Corruption is certain to debut in the US before the end of the year. In addition, we have to think that fans would riot if Japan got Smash and Galaxy in 2007 and the Americas did not.

Nintendo has historically shied away from releasing too many major games during a single year and as a result fans have become accustomed to bracing themselves for software delays. Beyond the second quarter, though, this year's Wii release schedule is anybody's guess and there is now real hope that the company could actually debut many of its biggest games before the holiday season.

While PlayStation 3 may not yet be a threat to Wii, Xbox 360 sales are continuing at a steady pace with no visible signs of slowing. The house that Mario built could choose to counter some of Microsoft's kings with aces of its own - Smash, Galaxy and Metroid can certainly compete with titles like Mass Effect, Halo 3 and Too Human. And Nintendo may be able to do this without losing sight of the mainstream crowd, dishing out efforts like Wii Health Pack and Wii Music.

Furthermore, Nintendo's 2007 Wii schedule consists of only 13 titles -- a far cry from the 45 projects the company has in development.

For now, the release schedule is not speculation, but truth - at least overseas. What remains to be seen is whether or not Nintendo will stick to the schedule or delay one or more projects to next year. If it does indeed move ahead as currently planned, 2007 may prove to be one of the biggest years in company history.

In separate, but semi-related news, rumors began to circulate late last week that Nintendo was interested in hiring former Sony head Ken Kutaragi, who, having fathered the PlayStation and its predecessors, is leaving the company. But speaking with the Japanese press, Nintendo's president said that such rumors were unfounded.

I forgot about Batallion Wars 2. They've gotta be working on an Animal Crossing game too.
