If my Elite croaks like the standard versions, I will be seriously pissed off. Supposedly there are some physical differences between the Elite and the standard versions, but it doesn't have the new heatsink like the most recent refurbs. Makes me nervous as hell.

Desperate for a Wii game to play I was forced to pick up this. It is mildly diverting. It is basically an adventure game, as you go about completing various fetch quests and collecting various hidden items/locations throughout Hogwarts. Grand Theft Potter Light.
Plusses are that the game world is huge and mostly seamless, it is fun using the Wiimote as a wand, most of the cast provide voices for the characters (though not Sirius or Snape) and the voice acting is reasonably good, and the graphics are passable. This is the first Potter game that comes close to getting it right. Walking around Hogwarts is VERY much like walking around it in the movies.
Minuses are that there does not seem to be nearly enough combat, the minigames are weak, you don't have complete camera control, and the quests seem a little unimaginative (not enough puzzles).
OK game, beats having the Wii collect dust.

Anyone else pick up The Darkness? I did based on mostly positive reviews and for simply looking badass. Turns out it is a fun, if somewhat flawed, game. The graphics are impressive, the story is immersive, and some of the darkness powers attained are pretty damn sweet. Unfortunately, the whole "shoot every light in a room before entering to maintain your darkness meter" mechanic is pretty bunk. That, and the controls are a bit sketchy, kinda loose feeling. It is violent as all hell though, and I can safely say that ripping the hearts out of dead enemies and devouring them never really gets old. Good old fashioned fun for the whole family.
I also preordered Bioshock while i was picking up The Darkness. I need that to come out now.

Eternal Sonata is beautiful. I saw it in action at a pre-E3 event a couple weeks back. Doubt I'll pick it up, though. I haven't played more than two hours of Final Fantasy XII yet.

Just bought it; haven't played it yet, but I'm really hoping it'll capture my interest better than MLB 07: The Show (PS3). What a stunningly dull game. I'm usually not drawn to arcade-style sports games, but the reviews won me over on this one.

The AI leaves a lot to be desired, yes, but the graphics (at least on the 360) are purdy. I mean, it's no Gears of War or anything, but it left me impressed. Some weak textures here and there, but impressive nonetheless.

I don't know the web address, but I'll get it from the wife and post it in this thread. There is a site (that is kinda tough to find, I guess. I can't google for it, at least) that lists what store will have Wiis in their Sunday circular ad that week. One week its Best Buy, the next its Target, the next Wal*Mart, then Circuit City, etc.
If its in the circular, those stores usually hold their shipments off shelves until Sunday so they can honor their ad. That means there is a relative surplus. That's how the wife tracked mine down. It was Target's turn, so she got to the store before it opened on Sunday morning and nabbed one. I think she said they had about a dozen, and all were gone w/in 30 minutes of opening. This was the end of April, btw, so its not like this was near launch or anything like that.
Then again, 3 weeks ago my friend decided to impulse buy one, drove to Target after work, and they had 2 on the shelves. So it does happen.
I still have yet to walk into a store and see one, though.

Here's an
MSNBC article from last week about how the demand for Wii's is still outstripping supply. Pretty amazing considering it's the summer and it came out 7 months ago. I just got lucky and got one about 2 months ago. I was running early before meeting my wife for dinner, and drove by a GameStop, which happened to have one in stock.
Anyway, aside from the above tips which pretty much cover everything, you could always get one on Ebay. The Ebay premiums on these things have actually come down pretty far. The console in the store tends to come out to about $270 with tax, and I've seen them on Ebay for $350 (including shipping). It sucks paying the extra $80.00, but it's a helluva lot easier.

i signed up for the itrackr website which lists which places have wii's in stock. but so far it didn't quite match up with what was on the site. the thing that killed me is that i called a target, they said they had it, i rushed over, ran into the store and the wii had been sold a minute prior. it was literally 12 minutes between my phone call and arrival. my girlfriend is going home for the weekend and i'm hoping that since she lives in the middle of nowhere, their walmart will have one. i also have a buddy who works at best buy and is going to see when their shipments are coming in. and then today i run into
this article in the trib. this is ridiculous.

Xbox 360 Repairs Will Cost Microsoft $1B
Thursday July 5, 7:54 pm ET
By Jessica Mintz, AP Business Writer
Microsoft to Take $1B Charge for Xbox 360 Warranty Extension
SEATTLE (AP) -- Microsoft Corp. said Thursday it expects to spend more than $1 billion to repair widespread hardware problems in its Xbox 360 video game console after a large number of them broke down.
Microsoft said it would extend the warranty on the Xbox 360 to three years after too many of the consoles succumbed to "general hardware failure," but the company provided few other details about the extent of the problems.
"We don't think we've been getting the job done," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, which also makes the Zune digital music player. "In the past few months, we have been having to make Xbox 360 console repairs at a rate too high for our liking."
Bach said the company made some manufacturing and production changes that he expects will reduce Xbox 360 hardware lockups, but he declined to identify the problems or say which others might remain. Microsoft said it will record a charge of up to $1.15 billion for its fourth fiscal quarter, which ended June 30, to cover the additional costs associated with the warranty extension.
The software maker also said sales of the console fell short of expectations for the fiscal year that just ended.
Matt Rosoff, an analyst at the independent research group Directions on Microsoft, estimates that Microsoft's entertainment and devices division has lost more than $6 billion since 2002.
Microsoft has written down larger amounts in the past -- more than $10 billion in the late 1990s related to investments in telecommunications companies, and more than $5 billion related to antitrust issues -- but a $1 billion write-down for one division in one quarter is significant.
"It suggests the problem is pretty widespread," Rosoff said.
Microsoft will pay for shipping and repairs for three years, worldwide, for consoles that experience hardware failure, which is usually indicated by three flashing red lights on the front of the console, something gamers sometimes refer to as "the red ring of death." Previously, the warranty expired after 1 year for U.S. customers and 2 years for Europeans.
Microsoft also will reimburse the "small number" of Xbox 360 owners who have paid for shipping and repairs on out-of-warranty consoles, Bach said.
In June, bloggers speculated that the Xbox 360 return problem was getting so severe that the company was running out of "coffins," or special return-shipping boxes Microsoft provides to gamers with dead consoles. "We'll make sure we have plenty of boxes to go back and forth," Bach said in an interview.
Chris Liddell, Microsoft's chief financial officer, said in a conference call that the company sold 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles since the product's November 2005 launch, missing a target for 12 million units by the end of the fiscal year.
Microsoft's entertainment and devices division reported an operating loss of $315 million on $929 million in sales for the three-month period that ended in March.

That zapper thing looks kinda dumb. How would it work on a normal FPS where you move your character with the analog stick? Having it on the back of the gun would seem to limit the nunchuk's effectiveness.
It would probably only work on an FPS where you character is on rails, and that would get boring pretty quick.

From the looks of the video, I don't see any reason why you couldn't move your character using the analog stick while holding the "gun." Just like the guy in the video, position your right hand on the stock/numbchuck with your thumb over the analog stick and finger wrapped around the c and z button, and hold the trigger with your left hand.
It's nothing groundbreaking, but it is a cool idea. The problem with light gun games is that you were always static or on a rail...this seems like a potential way to incorporate a "light gun" into a true fps.
