I know they're just going to send me a refurbed box that will probably bust in another three months, but eh... I'm probably not looking to pop $350 for a new one right now. Maybe when they move to the new chip set. But if I find myself with a juicy freelance offer and can't borrow a system for it, I'll have to buy one.
I haven't really been using it lately, but I'll miss the little things. Skate demo next week. BioShock the week after. I'm hopeful that it'll come a little faster than expected. They've already shipped the box through USPS, according to the e-mail I just got.
Played a round of Hot Shots Golf 5 today. Looking forward to tearing into the championship/campaign thing shortly.

After 2+ years of PSP ownership, I'm finally upgrading from the 32MB stick that came with the system.
Just ordered a 4GB stick for $60 from BestBuy.com. Gonna pick it up in-store shortly. It's much more space than I'll probably need anytime soon, but it allows room for expansion. I'm gonna grab all the Wipeout Pure DLC (so much! so pumped!) first, and transfer Jumping Flash! from the PS3 to the PSP. Kinda tempted to grab Crash Bandicoot for PS3/PSP now that I've got the space...
Even though my PSP is still is fairly fine working order (screen is great; right portion of d-pad is a little iffy), I'm planning on buying the new model when it ships next month. It's a marginal improvement, but after 2+ years of solid play from the original PSP, I don't feel so bad upgrading to a fresh one. Plus, the prospect of playing games on my TV via the connection cable is hard to resist, even if the games will more than certainly look like crap blown up (they usually do at the press events, where the PSP dev kits are always attached to LCD monitors).

Just grab the Play & Charge Kit. It's got a rechargeable backing for the controller and a cord that'll let you charge it via the Xbox 360 or a laptop or whatever has a USB input.
I think I'm gonna pop my copy of The Bigs on eBay soon. It's appeal was waning a bit, and now with my 'box out of commission for maybe a month, I might as well get value for it while I can.

So I just bought a used 360 online. How can I be so trusting? But the seller had a great seller rating of like 6,500 on half.com, and he said it was thoroughly tested and plays fine... so I figured I'd take a shot. With a rating they had, they're probably good on their word. Hopefully it's not an early model! However, I know that might not matter anyway... and if it goes red I'll still be able to send it in... I hope. I'm not sure how that'll work with a used model. 3 years after it was manufactured? Then I really hope it's not an old model.

$290. I figured I could basically get a free game out of the deal. Despite the console's problems, I'm not really worried about it... unless it is an early model. The seller isn't just some dude pawning off his stuff. I didn't think about the date of the manufacture when I bought it though. If it's no good, hopefully it'll prove that to me quickly and I can send it back to the seller or to MS to get it repaired. Odds are still in my favor it'll be fine though.

At $350 for a new one, I'd definitely have to recommend a pass on that one. If you were talking $175 for the used system, I might give it a thumbs-middle-upwards-ish.
So my system froze up after a few minutes of new life. But I just restarted it and it seems to be going fine now...
EDIT: Fuck, it's frozen up twice while playing the demo. And the second time I started it, I got the red rings... yet it continued to work for a solid five minutes, even with the rings flashing.

Aug 13 2007, 09:47 PM
Yeah, the 65nm chips aren't in the 360's that are currently being produced. Not sure when they're coming out, either. I don't follow it closely, but considering MS has been ducking straight answers since the Elite was confirmed, holding out for that console might be tough with the kick-ass games on the horizon.
Plus, the 360 Pro will soon (if not already) have the same HDMI connections as the Elite, too. blah blah blah blah
Sux about your system, Andrew.
Andyroo
Aug 13 2007, 10:02 PM
Premiums already have the HDMIs, just make sure you buy a fresh system and not one that's been on the shelf for a few months. It'll say on the box if it has the port.
When I called support on Saturday, I definitely mentioned that I was a writer for a couple of sites... didn't seem to help.

Yeah, the games that are coming out over the next few months tempted me beyond restraint. I know just buying one new would've probably been safer, but... whatever. I have three friends locally who all own a first generation, and none of them have crapped out yet. I couldn't have really gotten it a whole lot cheaper used unless I saw the words "red ring" somewhere in the description. Seriously, who the heck is going to buy a system when that is advertised? Obviously someone.
I wish I had snatched it new when Amazon was selling it at 329.99, but I missed it... so I took the next best available option: Used, from a seller who you couldn't get a better rating for. Stay tuned on any further developments though, folks.

I swear I'm having more fun with Wii than I should. The kids are getting me the Madden Wii game for my birthday this week. This will be my first Madden game, but after the rave reviews the Wii 07 version got, I figured why not go for a little bit of arcade football. Ordinarily I do not like arcade sports games, but this looks like fun and I figure I can always go back to Front Office Football when I want to play a game that mirrors the real thing.

I'm really interested to see how Madden plays out. I think half the fun of the Wii is finding out how they incorporated the controls into the game.
Super Paper Mario has been fun so far and so has Zelda. However, I'm really craving an in-depth RPG. I might have to switch back to the computer for an RPG fix. Any news on some non-online RPGs?

My Tennis ranking is only about 1100. I haven't played against CPU's there much since I got pro.
Yesterday I inexplicably won three boxing matches in a row against my brother. Who up to this point had only lost one match, and had never even come close to losing to me. So I decided to revisit the single player in boxing, and got my rank up to about 650. Heh.
I don't think I've gotten pro on Baseball yet, does it get difficult eventually? Kind of bored me whenever I tried it last against a CPU.

I'm up to around 1690-1700 in tennis right now. I lost against the 1900/2000 pair the first time I played them, but have beaten them 4 or 5 straight since then. I'm kinda disappointed that appears to be as far as it goes. They do put up a good fight now and then...my last match last night, they took a 2-0 games lead until I stormed back to win the next 3 games. But the match before that, I beat them 3-0.
I hate the game of golf, but I'm enjoying the challenge of Wii Golf so much that I'm seriously thinking of getting the new Tiger Woods game (it comes out 8.28). Probably will wait and let the kids get it for me for Xmas. The thing I don't like about Wii Golf is that the challenge is almost entirely based on the wind speed/direction. I'd rather not have the challenge be so dependent on those factors, but the course itself. Which is why I think TW '08 might be better suited for me.

Yeah the baseball one, as much as I love baseball, does get boring. I'm only up to around 600 simply because I enjoy tennis and golf more. And the only time I bowl is with my wife, so I haven't gotten that score up over 300 yet, I don't think. Never tried boxing, but maybe I'll give it a shot soon. I finally got 10 out of 10 on the HR Derby - it was pissing me off! I kept getting 9 and I think they upped the speed of the final pitch just enough to keep throwing me off (I kept swinging late and hitting a foul). The time before I got it, I consciously swung earlier and was too far ahead of it and hit it foul the other way. The next time, I connected perfectly.

It does seem to be true that Americans love Metroid than anyone else does. Can't complain, though, as I think it's awesome too. Super was like a side-on Zelda, but with better graphics and atmosphere.
And guns.

I spent 90 minutes last night trying to get used to the Madden Wii controls. Some of it was very intuitive - juking (waving the nunchuck L/R) was almost too easy, since I automatically did it without even thinking. But some of the moves (power move and stiff arm, and catching) were hard to get used to. And I don't have a clue how I'm supposed to be able to reach the 1 button to try to strip the ball on defense. Do I have a 6th finger that comes out of my palm for that?
About all I got through in 90 minutes were the tutorials and a bunch of practice plays on offense. Kicking is quite easy.
