So, over the summer, I realized that I wanted a wii.
But now I see that the 360 has the new katamari game. I can't think of any reason this doesn't seal the deal.
Word on the street is it's coming to the Wii too.
Times Square Toys R Us didn't have SMG yet when I went at opening. Checking again at lunch.

Have to say. Galaxy is making me want to get a Wii. When I had a 64 Mario and Zelda were my faves and probably remain my favourite games of all times barring a couple of others.

I always read on here about people finishing an entire game. I know this sounds naive, but I just don't know how you do it. Maybe the problem is I'm still at work, and have been working since about 7:00 this morning. Anyway, here's how behind I am. I've been playing Resident Evil 4 on my Wii for about 4 months now, and maybe I'm half way through. I love the game, I just can't ever play for more than a half hour at a time. I really want Super Mario Galaxy, but I'll be lucky to clear half the game.

It's one of them new, and affordable Blu-Ray players. You know, movies? S'great.
It took me a month and a week, but I finished BioShock today. It really took me two weeks of actual game time, but I stopped playing BioShock with when I got Guitar Hero 3. My motivation is I'm slowly becoming an achievement whore. Not to where I'm gonna play through games repeatedly, or play some bad games for easy achievement points, but I like getting the points. Another incentive is that I told myself I have to finish BioShock before I get any new games, but I said that about Metroid Prime 3, and I haven't finished that yet. Oh well, now I can get some other games.

Oh shit, Mario Galaxy is exquisite. Just played through the first galaxy. This is some magical Miyamoto goodness.
Hey Dan, where's it rank in the Mario soundtrack pantheon? That song in the first galaxy is so expressive and big-sounding, yet so distinctly Mario. Love it.
Picked up Assassin's Creed today. I wasn't huge on it when I played in Montreal last month, but I enjoyed the free roaming enough to want to play it at some point. Figured I'd best get it while it's not sold out and mess around with it a bit. Planning on nabbing Need for Speed: ProStreet tomorrow.

So pardon my ignorance - you will recall my comments earlier in the thread about Donkey Kong being the only Mario game I've ever played (hell, even SEEN!) - but what exactly do you DO in these Mario games? It basically looks like you run around a bunch of different, cool-looking "worlds" trying to avoid bad things and picking up good things? Is that it?
Honestly, I'm curious. We saw a commercial for Mario Galaxy last night, and my wife asked me about it, and I couldn't really answer her. And my 8 year old just got a DS, so I assume there are Mario games in her future, as well.

Well, it's certainly better than Sunshine's soundtrack (highly unremarkable) but in comparison to the classics it's really hard to compare since video game music has changed so much over the years, It still rests on a few of the NES games laurels(the orchestrated SMB3 airship theme might steal the whole show) so from a composition standpoint, perhaps not as strong as 3 or world, but in other terms it's one of the most refreshing soundtracks in ages. I can't say it's my favorite though, it's hard to set aside nostalgia.

yes, there are mario games in her future. all children should have a mario upbringing.
hmm. mario games. well, the older ones, many if not most you can play on the DS, are basically jumping and jumping in an effort to get the the goal. mario is renowned for his jumping. in fact, "super mario brothers," while not the FIRST "platform game,"(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_games) was probably the most important. as the series progressed, mario was given further powers, from fireballs to frog suits to capes. he eventually teamed up with a dinosaur named Yoshi. as the things he could do progressed, so did the tasks and challenges and level design in any given game. (though they all still maintained a lot of JUMPING at the core of the game)
when the N64 came out, 2d games became 3d and mario rose to the challenge. at this point, the tasks and goals became yet more complicated, and the games goals are now rooted in collecting items. while the market has gone a majority 3-d, games like New Super Mario DS tried new things out in the 2d realm (that game, despite not being universally LOVED, is still pretty good.)
anyway, the mechanics to the mario games are all tried and true. many many games ape the formula to limited success. the thing with mario is that these games are uniformally GOOD. so when a mario game is only "good" people get riled up because the series set such a high standard for itself under the pivotal supervision of MIYAMOTO. MIYAMOTO is a somewhat regarded as the WALT DISNEY of gaming for lack of a better comparison. he was also behind the ZELDAs.
ANYWAY. Mario games LOOK cute. and they ARE cute. but many older gamers do not mind the CUTE because the games are simply too joyous when done right. they are both easy and difficult at once. and the joy in mario games, when done right, stems from the ohmigodthatissocool reaction despite gender or age demographics. mario is universal.

Luckily, after Rock Band on Tuesday, there's nothing else I
have to buy before Christmas. Super Mario Galaxy, Uncharted, and Rock Band are priority plays, then I'll have Need for Speed, Mass Effect, and Assassin's Creed to pick back up on after those are done (except Rock Band, which will never end).

Also, SMG is amazing. It's a really simple game. But goddamn if Nintendo hasn't figured out how to make pure Joy an element of gameplay. Yeah, I'm pretty blown away by it -- the level designs are so basic, yet immaculately crafted and challenging. You just get the sense that this is the masterwork of someone (Miyamoto) who's been at it for ages. Sure as hell feels more like a sequel to Mario 64 than Sunshine did.
I only use the word "magical" to describe the Kingdom Hearts games, typically, but it's all over this game. Like when you spin on the ice and start skating, then twirl like a figure skater would when jumping.

Sunday is the best day to find a Wii, at least at the big box retailers. Dropped by a Target in Wisconsin last Sunday, early afternoon, and they had nearly a dozen in stock. First time I'd seen more than one system in stock

Ha. You have to be paranoid while playing sniper. Make the medics your highest priority. I do and it works out well.
The pyro is actually the best spy counter in the game. Just do short bursts of the flamethrower around you frequently, and often you will see a formerly invisible spy catching fire.
I think then game is brilliant, but only shipped with six maps and most of them aren't that great. 2fort is by far my fave, and great for sniper.
