whoooops, i meant gamespot. basically, the editor was fired due to a bad review (6.0) for Kane and Lynch that angered the publisher (Eidos, I believe) who was a big advertiser on the site. Sounds like they then went on to threaten to pull their ads which would result in a big money loss for gamespot. so in order to please eidos, gamespot fired their editor. good journalism ethics. dry.gif

So I've gotten most of Mass Effect done, and while I've yet to see the big plot twists and whatever (not sure if it's KOTOR-ish, but it's no secret that they're there), I can't quite say I've enjoyed this game more than the first KOTOR. Maybe even Jade Empire. Quite honestly, I probably like them all the same. ME has these great dialogue branches, and conversations you can sort of control go down better than I've ever seen in a video game. But right now the storyline just isn't as strong as KOTOR's, nor seems as personal as Jade Empire's was. But then again, maybe my outlook will change when I supposedly will have my mind blown shortly.

This was posted on Nintendo World Report:

QUOTE
Here's why you can be confident that there are no money hats or outside influence at Nintendo World Report.
We have used the same process for reviews since our very first reviews of import GBA games in early 2001. I oversaw the development of this process (although not the review format itself) and gained more and more influence as time went on, because my ideas seemed to work and make everyone happy. I know this is a good system, because I hear praise for it from our staff members who worked at other websites before coming to NWR, and I also hear praise from former staff members who have moved on to work at professional websites and magazines. Here's why NWR reviews are tamper-proof:

We are 100% independent – not owned by a corporation, not affiliated with a game retailer or publisher, not beholden to investors, and not even part of a network with other gaming sites. Our only responsibility is to you, the reader.

Editors never change articles against the author's will. All changes and suggestions made during the editing process are tracked and explained to the author and are up for discussion. This goes for everything, from comma placement to final score.

The author has final say over every single word in his or her review, and in fact the author directly posts his or her review to the website.

Our reviews do not represent, nor claim to represent, the views of the entire staff. As editor, I am not concerned with whether I agree or disagree with the review. All I care about is the writing quality, thoroughness, fairness, and self-consistency. If another staff member vehemently disagrees with a review or just wants to give a different perspective with a similar conclusion, he or she is encouraged to write a second review.

Publishers' public relations agents are not involved whatsoever in the editorial process. If someone at the publisher has a problem with the review after it is online, we may offer to write a second review (in addition to the first, not replacing it) with the disclaimer that it could be the same or more critical than the first.

Our entire staff works for free, including editors and the Director. We have nothing to gain or lose by inciting controversy for its own sake. We have no job security to jeopardize or protect. No person has ever been removed from the staff over a review.

For all the reasons above, you can rest assured that NWR takes its integrity, particularly with reviews, more seriously than anything else we do. You may not always agree with our reviews, but at least you'll know that they are our honest opinions.

Yes. I owned an 360 for less than a year. It's been broken for roughly 4 months of that time. It's currently holed up in a repair centre for the 2nd time.

I like Microsft, their customer support is top notch. I was refunded for the first time, and I'm under warranty for the 2nd time. It's just such a shame that their machine is so unreliable because the games beat the shit out of PS3.

Xbox broke about a month ago so I still have to play PES7, Assasins Creed, Mass Effect, Halo 3 etc. It's due back roughly around Christmas time, so hopefully I'll be getting some playing time in then.

Big gaming news, Activision and Blizzard are merging...

QUOTE
The companies behind Call of Duty and World of Warcraft are merging in a deal which could shake up the global video games industry.

Activision and Blizzard have said they will form "the world's most profitable games business" in a deal worth $18.8bn (£9.15bn).

US-based Activision also makes hit console games such as the Tony Hawk series and Guitar Hero.

Nine million people pay a monthly subscription to play World of Warcraft.

'High-growth industry'

Blizzard is the biggest player in online gaming and Warcraft is the global market leader of what are known as massively multi-player online role-playing games, or MMORPGs.

It is currently owned by the French media group Vivendi.

As part of the merger plan, Blizzard will invest $2bn in the new company, while Activision is putting up $1bn.

The merged business will be called Activision Blizzard and its chief executive will be Activision's current CEO Bobby Kotick. Vivendi will be the biggest shareholder in the group.

Jean-Bernard Levy, Vivendi chief executive, said: "This alliance is a major strategic step for Vivendi and is another illustration of our drive to extend our presence in the entertainment sector.

"By combining Vivendi's games business with Activision, we are creating a worldwide leader in a high-growth industry."

Different strengths

The two firms are hoping that their different strengths will combine to form a business which is powerful on every gaming platform and in every territory.

Blizzard is strong in Asia, where its Starcraft series has proved hugely popular.

Starcraft, a strategy game first released in 1998, is played by millions of South Koreans in gaming cyber-cafes, and by professional gamers on television.

Activision has developed a presence on all three new generation game consoles - Microsoft's Xbox 360, Sony's PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii - with franchises such as Spider-Man and X-Men.

The games software industry has been through turbulent years, with companies changing ownership and going in and out of business in rapid succession.

Activision was formed in 1979 and went through bankruptcy and a series of alliances and mergers before becoming successful.

Blizzard had been through a number of owners before ending up in the hands of Vivendi in 1998.

Despite the new name, it's actually Activision and Vivendi merging (Blizzard is owned by Vivendi) -- and though Blizzard is their biggest property, they also have F.E.A.R., Scarface, TimeShift, World in Conflict, and the nearly-obsolete Crash Bandicoot and Spyro licenses.

Pretty crazy thing to wake up to on a Sunday. I had one new e-mail in my box and figured it was probably a shitty Ticketmaster or iTunes newsletter. Nope -- Activision's investor relations (ha) mailing list sent me the press release.

I thought he was talking about xbox 1? Anyway, that system sucked too. I remember playing SSX 3, and I couldn't use a character because if I tried my system would freeze. I remember a lot of freezing. The disc drive is super sensitive so try cleaning it with a lens cleaner, or something. It helps a little, but that system is gonna freeze up no matter what. Microsoft clearly doesn't know how to make hardware.

All right, I beat Mass Effect last night as the upstanding white guy Ace Shepard, colonist whose friends and family had been killed and had been the sole survivor in an attack against his unit. He could do no wrong except agree to kill a couple of gangsters and accidentally run over a monkey. I started a new game as Leslie, tougher-than-tough Earth-born streetrat who will kill everyone else under her command as long as she gets the job done. I've also decided to make her have a lesbian affair with a blue alien. Despite not being as crazy about the game as I thought I would've been, I'm really looking forward to Mass Effect 2 because it definitely seems like your character will carry over... and the prospect of being able to use both of these characters and face the consequences I made with both of them in later games is pretty damn cool. There's definitely a couple of big choices you have to make in the game, and it'll be interesting to see if Bioware can make it so those decisions will actually carry weight over the rest of the story. Even some smaller choices in this game could seriously affect me in the future. As Ace, I decided not to help the Shadow Broker, a neutral party in basically everything who sells information to anyone and everyone to keep things balanced. When I decided not to help them, they responded with a "We'll see what happens if you ever need the Shadow Broker in the future then." It would be awesome if in the third game that really comes back to bite me.

Horrible list. I'm not a huge gamer but according to that list, the 100 greatest video games of all time only includes 5 arcade games: and those arcade games are: Ms. Pacman, Street Fighter, Contra, Space Invaders, Star Wars, and Bionic Commando???

If you're going to omit the likes of Galaga, Defender, Rampage, Gauntlet (and whatever else I wasted my quarters on) then just omit arcade games, and limited the list to counsel/pc games.

Damo Suzuki
I dunno if that's a far criticism. The list is somewhat wonky. No doubting that. Any list that dose not have Planescape:Torment and Ico in the very top tier is suspect.

But Rampage shouldn't be on the list out of nostalgia. That game doesn't hold up at all and wasn't as influential on game design as your Street Fighter or Space invaders were/are.

I wasn't very clear in my original post...I just listed a bunch of arcade games off the top of my head that I personally played alot...not necessarily games that should be listed as the greatest ever. As fate would have it, I do think that Galaga and Defender are deserving...and possibly Gauntlet, but I'm not sure that even qualifies as one of the greatest ever (although it's the first 4 person co-op game I can remember).

My point was that the list omits tons of great games from the arcade genre. I have a feeling a lot of the editors spent more time with counsels than quarter machines. That's not a bad thing....but then the list should have been limited to counsels. Think of it this way, according to that list the six greatest arcade games of all time are:

(1) Ms. Pacman,
(2) Street Fighter
(3) Contra
(4) Space Invaders
(5) Star Wars
(6) Bionic Commando

One and two would be credible entries...but after that there's a pretty big dropoff in rationality.
Damo Suzuki
Well, It just may be that the editors do prefer console and PC games more than arcade games. Different generations, times and such. List could use more classic PC games and more arcade games, sure. I don't think they actively set out to omit those. Rather they voted for the games they felt were the best or most resonant- medium notwithstanding.

I think that's probably what happened. 4 of those 6 arcade games (Street Fighter, Contra, Star Wars in its various incarnations, and Bionic Commando) also had a very strong console presence. To be honest...I never even knew Bionic Commando was an arcade game, I only knew its console incarnations.

Odd as it is, I think there's a pretty big divide between console and arcade gamers.
Undercooked Sausage
While obviously Street Fighter and Ms Pac Man deserve to be on there, (and i applaud them for using Ms Pac Man over Pac Man, due to the fact that it's obviously superior, and I wish they would've followed this with there other picks like Super Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros chosen over their infinitely better descendents.) and I could definitely see a case for Galaga, Arcades aren't as prominent as they used to be, Street Fighter became more or less as big of a success on console as it did arcade, and a lot of arcade games are really just designed to eat as many quarters from you as they can, such as the aforementioned Rampage. Which, yeah, Rampage is a pretty fun game, but it's more or less destroying a city over and over. Also, I'm pretty sure they're referring to the far superior console version of Contra(shittier graphics, but longer and harder). Not that the arcade version is bad or anything.

There's all sorts of retarded about this list, most notably the exclusion of Earthbound and the unfathomably high placing of the original Dragon Warrior, or the fact that Resident Evil 1 is on it when it's a popular opinion that it's sequel was much better(and was recieved better at the time of it's release).
Undercooked Sausage
also wave race 64 doesn't deserve to be on any list whatsoever. When I think of great games that were left off due to it's inclusion it brings my piss to a boil.

props for sam & max inclusion even though I liked Day Of The Tentacle more(and surprised they weren't retarded and picked Maniac Mansion or something).

Yeah, it's not really a big deal or anything. I write for The Daily Herald/Beep and Innocent Words. For DH/Beep I have written a ton of suburban bar reviews, and every now and then will try and ask for something music-related. Innocent Words is a small bi-monthly publication that I've been writing some album reviews for. Nothing that's going to support me, just a fun side job to keep up my writing, and I'll take any excuse I get to go to a bar.
