Wow. That's potentially a really terrible name.

I picked up Paper Mario for GameCube for $16 yesterday. Hoping that's awesome.

They should call the new nintendo the Nintendo SS because it will take over the world like a nazi stormtrooper.

Nothing out of the ordinary. Companies don't make money off hardware sales. It's been like that for as long as I can remember.

They make most of their money of first-party software, but Nintendo is the only one of the three that consistantly put out games that people actually want to play (of course, with their last two systems, the Nintendo games are pretty much your only choices).

On the DS, nine of the top ten best rated titles (according to Game Rankings) were published by Nintendo. And twelve of the top fifteen. Not a shocker.

Sausage is right about the hardware. I've worked gaming retail for about five years, and there's almost zero profit on the new systems. When I worked at Best Buy for a short time, we got discounts on almost everything... except the systems. The discount was 5% above cost; we probably would have paid more for the system with our discount than without!

QUOTE
Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter was more mixed in his assessment. "My initial reaction, of course, is that the name is dumb," he bluntly stated. "However, upon reflection, I thought that the name Game Boy was dumb, REALLY thought that the name Xbox was dumb, and can't even recall my reaction to PlayStation. Let's face it, devices with cool names like Dreamcast and Gizmondo fail, and the lame names seem to do well."

Gizmondo over PlayStation? Dork.

On a comment about the Nintendo Wii, someone posted this.

"I've been calling it "The Online Smash Brothers Machine" since day one."

I'm really not a big fan of Smash Bros., but I will admit that the game is much, much better in multiplayer than single player. Online play will propel sales into the millions, for sure.

What were wii thinking.

lol

Now that i think about it, the name is pretty brilliant on Nintendo's part . If the system tanks, then the blame is partly our own. Its like Nintendo is creating a team, and if wii all don't buy into it, the whole organization will suffer.

Honestly though, I'm thinking that the name was actually a typo on a memo that was supposed to read Nintendo Wifi.
SpacemanSpiff
Wii >>> Wifi
Wifi is allready known and used. Wii is a brand new concept, although I'm sure the idea of Wifi had something to do with the name.

I tried to read the gay thing on the site and then the words just disapeared out of no where. I guess "Wii" cant count on "Mii"

It's not that it's stupid. It's just so damn literal.
Paul
The more I think about the name Wii, the less lame I think it is. It's something that will work internationally which is definitly a positive for Nintendo. And anyway, "XBOX" and "Gamecube" were really fucking stupid names when everyone first heard them.
kingsleadhat
Yeah, I'm already used to it

Go Nintendo!

you guys are fucked up.

How about just NINtendo?
Andyroo
There's already a lot of conspiracy theories about the Wii name being an intentional hoax. Not only has Nintendo failed to register a trademark, but the press release is supposedly very strangely worded.

http://www.snarkhunting.com/2006/04/ninten...liant/#comments

Nintendo replied by saying they've filed for several trademarks and patents already.

I got a chuckle from this:

except from the IGN Wii mailbag:

Yeah the new name isn't the greatest. But you know what? I don't see my grandma playing "the revolution". I don't see my kid sister playing a "revolution".

I can see them playing a "Wii"

Matt responds: You're going to let your grandma and your sister play with your Wii? Seriously, I wouldn't promote that fact. In addition to being disgusting, incest is illegal in most states.

Working on unlocking the eternal stages on katamari, got the first one and immedediately tried to do the moon level, but i can only pull off a 750m or so. Practice makes perfect i guess.

I'm spending all of today playing Kingdom Hearts II. I need to finish it by tomorrow night, and I have to work tomorrow. I think I'm 8-10 hours from completion, so that's my project today.
Andyroo
REBIRTH!

I beat Kingdom Hearts II earlier this week, and haven't really played much since. I've played a bit of Lumines for PSP while watching TV, but nothing else. I have a stack of games, but I'm not sure what I want to play. I may try to get Top Spin 2 (Xbox 360) knocked out in the next week or so.

I've just agreed to write for another gaming site and they're sending me Tourist Trophy (PS2) and Go! Sudoku (PSP) to review in the next few days. Awesome.

Also... the Nintendo DS Lite is coming out in the U.S. on June 11th. It looks wonderful. I'm going to reserve one this weekend, if possible.

my two week video game fad or so is more or less over. I still play Guitar Hero sometimes though! I'm not cool enough for real guitar.

never played any of the HITMAN series, so does anyone think the new 360 version would be worth picking up? I like the look of it and the gaming looks pretty fun....plus you can choose how you want the story to go down.

I rented Fight Night 3 over the weekend
I think I'll end up buying it just so I can see if the mutant looking boxer I created can win the title

Great game, although it becomes very repetitive. The career mode offers little variety or motivation to continue.

Indeed. Microsoft has already started their onslaught of content on Xbox Live for the 360. I just downloaded the demo of Test Drive Unlimited and about a dozen trailers. They're going to be releasing new stuff each day this week.

I'm working on a feature about it, so I'll be downloading everything.

so tomorrow we get to play lost planet?? too cool!

plus chromehounds, moto GP and test drive so I hear.

The downloadable content for the 360 is a fucking great idea. If only I had one.

Wii will rule E3. I know it's not a bold statement, but it must be said.
Andyroo
Square Enix just announced roughly two dozen games, including Final Fantasy XIII and another game for PlayStation 3, and two games for Wii.

You might be right about the Wii. It's really picking up steam.
SpacemanSpiff
Indeed it is...enough steam perhaps....to start a seperate thread!?
Andyroo
I'm watching the Sony pre-E3 press conference right now.

EDIT: PlayStation 3, November 17th, $499 (20GB) or $599 (60GB)

Not sure what to think. I expected $500, but for a larger hard drive.
Undercooked Sausage
yeah, 600 dollars. That isn't happening for me. Sorry Sony.
Andyroo
The $500 model is missing other things, so it looks like I'm shelling for the $600.

I may reserve two of them and try to sell one. Not sure it's worth the hassle, really.

EDIT: Was laying in bed, thinking. Without glorious launch titles, I may hold off on this purchase. I will almost certainly have the money for it when it comes out, but I will also likely be moving within a few months after its release. If the big games I want for it come out (likely) a year later, I may want to hold off until at least Spring 2007 to see where my life is.

But who knows? No guarantees, either way. I'll reserve one for sure and see how I feel in November.
Andyroo
My pre-E3 impressions:

Microsoft - After seeing the PS3 and Wii, I initially felt like the Xbox 360 could become the next Dreamcast; a great system that was doomed to be a stopgap between generations. But while the Xbox 360 may be the last of the "standard" gaming systems (no tilt/motion), it may come through with the games. We all expected Halo 3, Fable 2, and Forza 2, but the exclusive (extra content) rights to Grand Theft Auto IV is a huge pickup for them. It may not be coming out until next fall, but people will start counting the months and days (it was initially thought to be an exclusive release -- it's not; but Rockstar will provide exclusive episodic content for the 360 version). I have an Xbox 360 and love it; glad to see it's not totally outshined.

Sony - The PlayStation 3 is impressive, yes. But $500/$600 puts it out of the range of most gamers. The system will not be the immediate smash that the PS2 was because it is no longer being marketed as a gaming machine. It is an entertainment device. The success of the launch will depend on what titles are ready for launch. The big two for me are Metal Gear Solid 4 (amazing!) and Final Fantasy XIII (and its side-story FFvsXIII), but neither is expected until Fall 2007. Still, when the 360 came out, I told myself I could wait, and when one became available, I couldn't. I'm sure this will be destroying my checking account on November 17th.

Nintendo - Their press conference was a bummer (no price, no date), but Legend of Zelda and Mario look awesome and will be launch titles. Expect this to launch at $200-$250 by the end of November, and it should be pretty successful. I didn't expect too much from Nintendo this generation, but they may really be on to something. Launching at the lowest price of this console generation with totally new gameplay mechanics, they could rebuild their reputation and be a gaming leader again.
Kennan
Meh. I thought the Wii presentation was pretty alright.

Of the three "next-generation" consoles, I know it's first in my book.

EDIT: after reading the wii thread.

i also think the wii will be a surprise success, doing MUCH better than the Cube did...

with the console on the floor tomorrow, i'm sure we'll get a price then...

super mario galaxy looks pretty sweet; and i'm all for a wii wario-ware.
SpacemanSpiff
$ONY- Looking like the big loser at this point, and by a wide margin at that. THe price tag is way, way too high and abit shady, too. That "motion" stuff for the controller, is already available for the PSP, which sucks as well. Why are they so in love with the Dual Shock design anyhow? I always found the placement of the analogs to be quite uncomfortable. That, and the fact that they probably won't have any playable games, only videos for the PS3....poor fucks.

Nintendo- The games look sharp, the controller looks fun as all hell, and I want a DS Lite! I was really hoping for more info on the virtual console and for them to let loose on that BIG SECRET they seem to have forgotten about. The conference was, in short, one big fat cocktease. And I don't like my cockteases big or fat.

Microsoft- A few very cool surprises here, namely GTA4 coming out for 360 first. The camera looks quality, as does pretty much everything else they talked about. I also love the fact that the HD-DVD player coming out is optional, and only a hundred bucks. Pay attention $ONY!!! This is how you introduce a new media format! You don't tack it onto a game console and add 200 dollars for it, even though nobody knows what the hell it is. HALO and Fable look outstanding, as does the Live Arcade....damn I want a 360!

So, in order of best in show so far-

Microsoft
Nintendo

Sony?
nobodies
Repost my thoughts from the Wii thread:

Was just reading a report from E3 on AICN. From the rumblings on the convention floor, it sounds like Microsoft is coming out as the big winner, with Nintendo running second (and possibly first after further details). I guess the word is alot of gamers are pissed about the 499-599 price point for PS3, and the graphics on display by PS3 didn't look noticeably different from the Xbox, which is obviously cheaper and has a one year jump start.

Additionaly edits:

The HD-DVD/Blu-Ray battle is really starting to piss me off; and video game counsels are not the platform to fight that war (why should console systems that are essentialy for 18 to 35 year olds effect what content the rest of us get to see?). Moreover, there probably shouldn't be a format war to begin with, but that's a different thread.

That being said, xbox 360 seems to be the winner here too. Extra $100 bucks gets you the deluxe xbox plus an hd-dvd player. Plus, from what's being reported on the xbox site (obviously somewhat biased), hd-dvd's will come packaged with both the new hd-dvd content, and the old dvd format...so the flciks will be backwards compatible on your old dvd players. Again...I don't think any of this should really come into play on a console system to begin with...but it's one more notch for microsoft.
Andyroo
I believe people were able to play with the PS3 controller last night and there will be playable games tomorrow.
Sam
I liked the Wii portion of the Nintendo presentation, because I'm a sucker for how Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess looked. I think the console seems to really be ingenious. Most innovative. Coming out of the box with its two biggest stars as launch titles. Virtual console. Lowest price by far.

Sounded like a winner to me . . .

. . . until I saw the Halo 3 trailer.

Goddamn, I Bungie's bitch. I could never play another 360 game as long as I live (which won't happen) and I will still buy the damn thing just for Halo 3.

And the trailer hardly showed shit. Grrrrr: me.
Andyroo
I haven't seen the Halo 3 trailer yet, but I'm not a huge fan. I'll download it from Xbox Live tonight.
Slackmo
Anyone know what the GTA 4 theme is going to be?
Andyroo
I'm guessing it's a rebirth for the franchise. Could be modern-day like GTAIII.
