i still need to finish that game, completely lost interest halfway through, never was a dragon quest guy, and VIII didn't really change my mind on the matter.
I dug it. It had a really simple story, but the sheer scope of the game was pretty massive. Not Elder Scrolls massive, but it was definitely pretty huge for a PS2 JRPG. Took me 92 hours to beat it. That's the most time I've ever spent on an RPG. I always want to play it again, but get exhausted just thinking about how long it would take to play it again. I had way more time on my hands in late 2005/early 2006 then I do now. Persona 3 will probably take 70 hours to go through, and I've already have it for a month or so and played it for a total of 13-14.
Why am I getting Lost Odyssey next month???
Andyroo
Jan 12 2008, 04:36 AM
I thought Lost Odyssey looked terrible at E3, but apparently Famitsu loved it and other impressions are favorable. Weird. Maybe they just showed us all the wrong bits. I mean, the words "generic copycat malarkey" populated my mind during the presentation. Either way, I'm not personally interested.
As for the Brawl delay, I don't have any kind of inside scoop, but my hunch would be yes. There's usually a lot more immediate buzz at the one-month mark before release, typically because the press has more access, or demos and such hit retail. EGM has a big cover story on it this month, but it's not a review -- that's fairly telling to me. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if it launched on time; just seems like the push is being postponed a bit.

Pretty sure I got Mario. The fact that I don't know off-hand means, yeah, it was probably Mario.

Picked up Tomb Raider Anniversary for 360 today. Now, will I play it for 30 minutes like the PS2 version, or actually put in the effort? Here's hoping. Burnout wins all conflicts in a week and a half, though.

eternal sonata is apparently the best next gen JRPG
i havent played blue dargon yet
and lost oddyssey looks fucking terrible
Kennan
Jan 15 2008, 06:47 PM
yeah, i heard likewise about sonata.
though apparently lost odyssey got a 36 in famitsu. though b. dragon got a 35 (a little high methinks compared to the metacritic average.)
so i gotta ask, with all the gloom-and-doom stuff on 360, i need something cheerier. d/ling demo for pinata. but i'm curious about KAMEO. i loved some rare platformers, though they also made some crappy stuff. the banjos are topnotch, dk64 was okay. grabbed by ghoulies sucked, though. and i wanted to like SF adventures more than i did.
so anyone play kameo and if so, thoughts? i hear its brief, but i have no problem with that.
in other news, according to rare development BANJO THREEIE is now over half way done.
that and i went in to work and found i wasn't SCHEDULED today. AND i found a ten dollar bill on the sidewalk. so god either wants me to play tf2 OR see "there will be blood."

It seems most people's issues with Lost Odyssey have been technical, but that really hasn't stop a game from being good unless those issues make it unplayable. That's not what I've read about this game though. Otherwise, complaints just seem like nitpicking because it's more of a traditional, late 90s sort of RPG, and... what's wrong with that? It's pretty much another Final Fantasy game, and as long as the story is better than FFXII's, it should be a good time.

Yeah I had the same problem until we played that last game where we actually completed the entire match. I didn't get booted once, and that experience was sublime. My teleporter trap worked once. I placed a teleporter at an entrance to the intellegence room which teleported the player right in front of my sentry gun. Instant death. I stole that tactic from a video I saw though. Famitsu has given Smash Bros. a perfect 40/40 score. Smash Bros becomes only the 7th game to get a perfect score from Famitsu after The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Soulcalibur, Vagrant Story, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Nintendogs and Final Fantasy XI.

This is a possibly interesting development. I have to admit, as a recent owner of a PS2 and someone who hasn't seriously considered moving up to a next-gen console (well, I have a Wii, but I'm talking PS360), I didn't realize that the PS3 had gone from full backwards compatibility to NO b/c. Given how hot the PS2 still is, and how badly the PS3 is doing in North America, it would make sense to entice people like me to buy a newer PS3 or possibly PS4 so that I wouldn't waste the PS2 game collection I have.
Anyway, all of that is the lead-up to this:
http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/2452.htmlSCEJ Job Ad Hints At Backwards Compatibility For PS3, PS4?
Now, some of you with big PS2 libraries who didn't race out and get the original 60GB PlayStation 3 were probably disappointed; later models simply don't support PS2 titles. The 80GB only has partial backwards compatibility (it uses software emulation like the Xbox 360), and the more recent 40GB model has no b/c for PS2 games. But this doesn't mean Sony is completely ditching the idea of b/c for the future.
According to a recent job advertisement, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan is looking for a software engineer who can tackle backward compatibility for both the PS3 and "an unspecified next-gen console," so says Gamefront.de. Now, some are saying that unnamed console could be the PlayStation 4, but there's no real evidence to support that theory as of yet. But the ad does say the engineer will have to be able to "implement and optimize emulation software for PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3 games." Could Sony already be at a point where backwards compatibility is up for discussion on the PS4? And perhaps more importantly for the here and now, could full backwards compatibility for the PS3 make a triumphant return?
One of the biggest reasons the 40GB PS3 is so much cheaper than the original 60GB model is because it doesn't have the graphics synthesizer chip that allows for almost full PS2 software compatibility. It was simply too expensive an addition, so Sony nixed it and instead abandoned b/c for PS2 games. The 40GB model can still play PS1 games, but wouldn't it great to have a system that can play them all? Could the PS4 be fully b/c? That'd be one hell of a massive library upon launch, yes?
Oh, and for anyone interested, here are the December/Year-end console sales numbers:
Nintendo DS..........2.47 million.....8.50 million
Wii.....................1.35 million........6.29 million
Xbox 360...........1.26 million........4.62 million
PlayStation 2.......1.1 million.......3.97 million
PSP...................1.06 million.......3.82 million
PlayStation 3........797.6 K..........2.56 million
Yes, the DS nearly sold as many units in December as the PS3 sold all year.
