Haha, thanks. Could be moving to SF pretty quickly -- a couple 1UP editors are seeking a roommate; checked out the place yesterday and declared my interest today. If it's a go, I think I'd be out there by the end of the month. I interviewed for a full-time gig at another outlet during my visit, but if I was living at that apartment, it'd be a 45-60 minute commute every weekday (bus --> train --> shuttle), and that's not really something I'm feeling while trying to get used to city living. Not counting it out entirely, but staying freelance and doing a lot of event coverage downtown sounds more appealing for now. Anyway, that's where I'm at.

Got tossed a bit of work while I was out there -- reviewing Ninja Reflex (Wii/DS), writing something 'bout MLB 2K8 (360), and also previewing an upcoming DS game. Just picked up Smash. Hopefully it works in my launch Wii.

Some recent observations:

Smash Bros. is amazing. Best multiplayer game for the Wii hands down, and I can't imagine anything topping it, not even Mario Kart.

No More Heroes is the best Third-Party Wii Game by a wide, wide margin. Matter of fact, there really aren't any other original titles to group it with.

MLB 2k8 has made some strides in the gameplay department, but a step back graphically. It plays better than its predecessors, though. One major gripe about the game, though. The stadium announcers mispronounce the names of both Aramis Ramirez (2nd year in a row) and Felix Pie. Seeing how these two are starters on the team, this gaffe is inexcusable. Just dreadful audio in general. One of the few games where I'd rather listen to my own music while playing.

Have you played the Godfather game? I know it's mostly a port, but the Wii controls really make the game better. It's so satisfying to actually swing a pipe or throw someone off a roof.

I wish I could care about Smash Bros. But I just don't. Even if the play controls are awesome, no voice chat just kills it for me.

If a person didn't care for the original (and I didn't) is there anything in this iteration that would justify the purchase?

I played some Smash Bros. last week in Austin

I played with regular controllers rather than the Wii-motes, as people were telling me the Wii-motes were all kinds of suck for it.

Anyway, I liked what I played of it, but in the end, it was Smash Bros. I mean, it's great and multiplayer is fun, yeah, but I dunno. I didn't get to delve in to the single player campaign, though, which I hear is pretty rad. So that might make up for it. Oh, and also the chumps I played with decided not to play with weapons or extras or anything which was all sorts of sad. I wanted to see the gigantic NintenDog claw at my screen. Maybe next time.

I have read this elsewhere. Any game that doesn't play as well on the current system's controllers, as opposed to those of the previous generation's, is unacceptable. Now watch, I'll play it in a week or so, fall in love with it, and rush out and buy it.

That's really not applicable in the case of the Wii. It's not like you have to jack the system to make the old controller work. The Wii was always designed with Gamecube compatibility in mind. It was far sighted of nintendo to make the gamecube controller so compatible since anything that isn't motion sensing it going to play better on a gamecube controller.

The voice chat issue does suck, but my friends and I have come up with the idea of using 360 voice chat while we play wii. Start up the 360 voice chat, then pull out the AV cables to the TV and hook up the wii while you leave the 360's power on.

PROBLEM WITH HAVING A COMPETITIVE MATCH WHEN SHIT LIKE THAT CAN HAPPEN SORT OF DRAINED ALL THE FUN OUT OF THAT EXPERIENCE, ITEMS ARE FUN AS HELL WHEN YOU'RE JUST GOOFING OFF WITH YOUR FRIENDS, BUT WHEN YOU'RE PLAYING COMPETITIVELY FOR MONEY OR PRIZES OR WHATEVER, THE CHANCE THAT A SMASH BALL OR A HEART CONTAINER CAN FALL INTO YOUR OPPONENTS LAP AT ANY TIME IS ALL SORTS OF WRONG. AT LEAST I BEAT THE TWO PEOPLE BEFORE ME 3 KOS TO ZERO, AND IN ONLY TWO MINUTES, THE PEOPLE THERE WERE THREATENING TO BEAT ME UP OR SOMETHING BECAUSE I WAS SO GOOD LOL

Did that a lot during the Strikers' days. Wii60 is a good stop-gap if your opponent has both systems. Too bad it just makes the Wii's shortcomings that much more apparent.

i have a good SSBB release story. i was haning out with 3 of my friends, and they all have wiis, i dont. we decided to go wait in line for 2 hours to get SSBB. the way it worked is at 10, you can go intot he store to prepay, then you have to leave the store and line up again, and they open the doors at midnight, you present your reciept and get your game. i went along b/c what else am i going to do right? so anyway, all thress of these bastards bring DS's which, again i dont have. so at 10 when they opened for pre-pays, i go in and buy a DS. The guy behind the counter first didnt believe me, then he just kind of sttod in shock, like "what kind of jackass comes to gamestop at midnight of the SSBB release to buy a fucking DS?" anyways i got one, and i love it. i have zelda hourglass, geometry wars, and phoenix wright ace attorney. i have a CycloDS Evolution and 8gb microSDHC coming in the mail.

Busy with classes for the rest of the week, but I'll try to get in some online brawling this weekend. Played it offline a lot yesterday, it's fun, but I wasn't totally earth-shattered by it. It's actually really close to being Melee 1.5, not that there's anything wrong with that.

MLB 2K8 truly is pretty ugly compared to last year's game. What a bizarre turn of events.

Enjoying the analog pitching, but it's slowing the game down quite a bit.

Not sure I'll play much videogame baseball this year. The Show is nicer, but I don't know that I have the time or interest this season.

yeah one clerk tried telling me they were only selling brawl, and the other clerk was quick to realize i was about to shell out 200+ dollars (including games and such) to them and said, yes you can buy whatever youd like.

Having worked at GameStop for four of my twenty-some years on Earth, I can verify that this is the most realistic depiction of a GameStop customer/employee(s) exchange ever. Seriously. One employee immediately bristles at the possibility of doing more work than he "should have to," and the other is moderately intelligent, at least business-wise.

Played some more Turning Point: Fall Of Liberty today. Its solid. Nothing groundbreaking or particularly special about the game. But a fun action romp nonetheless. Shooting Nazis will always have a certain satisfaction associated with the act. I like the aspect of the game that brought the battle to New York and the whole "what if Nazis attacked America?" angle. Makes for compelling visuals and fun shooting gallery.

holy shit is the "brawl with anyone" mode pointless, how does nintendo not know after ten years that NO ONE plays anything but stock.

They probably didn't want people to have to sit and watch after they ran out of lives in a brawl. But yea, Timed battles are still ridiculous.

time battles are good for >2 people. with stock and 3 or 4 people, whoever runs away the best wins.
