maybe

Am I the only one who really hates Smash Balls and all that? They really just completely stop the game. And they're way too game-deciding.
Undercooked Sausage
i havent played with items in over a month.
Undercooked Sausage

been playing this all night, unlocking characters looks to be a pain in the ass, just beat 150cc and there are still blanks and i know i got someone by getting at least a star rank on some difficulty

i never figured out how they guaged your grade in Mario Kart at all since 90% of the gameplay is pure dumb luck.

Most items make it more fun. I mean, it's always been a big part of the game, at least if yer not one of those ridic tourney players. But this just is too much.
Undercooked Sausage
i only play with items if we got 3-4 people going

other than that if it's 1v1 it's just retarded because whoever picks the faster character will win.

works in 4 people games, too
sonic just spazzes around while people put up two hits on it, then spins thru everybody, gets final smash or whatever, and rapes the map with supersonic.
but you know that

For some reason i couldn't get my copy of MARIO KART WII today. I ll get it tomorrow.

Do you know if friend codes works with systems in different countries/continent? Could we theoretically play together? Or maybe it would lagg?
Andyroo

I'm a fan. Imported the Ceramic White one from Play-Asia -- love the extra heft and digging the color.

Also got Taiko Drum Master for DS (with the little drumstick styluses!) and Echochrome for PSP, but haven't had a chance to play either yet.

MARIO KART WII

I am so bad. I played a few times online and i m down to 4600 points. I was one of the worst players. I have to change it and play more. ( I must say that i find the online more appealling than the offline so far).

Sausage, How do you play it? I personally like using the wiimote and the nunchuk. The Wiiwheel is fun, but i can't see myself using it when i really want to be good, and can't afford to loose.

Undercooked Sausage
i play with the gamecube controller, i'm at like 6500 or something and i've only played online like twice, lol. But im gay and stuff so

the second time i sat down and played it was pretty hard for me to get any higher unless i ALWAYS was in first or second place, anything below that i lose points now!

i didn't get a wii wheel because i pirated it, natch, but i wanted to try it out.

as far as mote+chuck, why bother when you can use a GC controller.
Undercooked Sausage
but I'm not actually good, the only two Karts I can say I was probably really fucking good at where Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64, from what I hear bikes+heavyweights are the way to go in Wii and I've been using lightweights+karts all my life so it's pretty impossible for me to change

but your average four year old or whatever is going to get raped by me(as long as it's a skill-heavy map like N64 Bowser's Castle, blue shell spam me all you want you british fucks i'll still kick your ass at that level).
Undercooked Sausage
protip though is to go through all the cups before you venture online, at least through 100CC, when i first got my hands on the game the online wasnt working yet (LOL) so i had time to learn the courses through 1p mode. Made a huge difference because you can tell the people online, particularly in the 4500-5000 range, don't know the tracks at all.
Undercooked Sausage
but post your friend code duder! we'll race a couple rounds or something.

i suck

dude you actually did really well in delfino square, took me fucking forever to catch up to you.

grumble volcano was some major lols though, and me turning around on mario raceway to see what the hell you were up to only to be greeted by 3 red shells.
clemsy
Yep it was fun. Though i had the feeling that you gave me some advantages so that it would be more equal. AND I LOST.

Do you know when in teh game one can play with their MII?
Undercooked Sausage
stick with Toad until you get better/get over the whole falling into pits thing, his acceleration lets you come back with not as big of a penalty.

then once you get that down, power slide, power slide, power slide, it's all about the power slide.
Undercooked Sausage

Yep it was fun. Though i had the feeling that you gave me some advantages so that it would be more equal. AND I LOST.

yeah i realized that first grand prix was BORING AS HELL and you were all like "go easy on me!" in the menu so i was like "alright time to make this fun."

major lols also when we'd get three red shells and sit and park and wait for the guy to whizz past.

and i was able to race as a MII after i beat 100CC i believe.
clemsy
delfino was my first online, and i must say i really enjoy it.

I prefer the races that are bright with lots of nice colors. I am not too good with the Browser/volcano ones.

BUT I GUESS that ill kick ass when it gets released in the US and then we can do some races with more people.
Undercooked Sausage
also you pretty much beat me fair and square on Peach Beach, i kept fucking up on that one, and before i realized it, i was frantically chucking red shells at you in hopes to get you before you crossed the finish line.
Undercooked Sausage
Delfinos the best track off the DS version, very happy it's on here, and yeah, hope people will get on this shit. Hell, I was having a ball just spamming menu chats in the lobby to you.
clemsy
Yep and i was thinking. "gosh that was close"

Though to my "defense" i must say that i only played mario kart Snes. and twice double dash. I had a similar games on PS1 called street racer with frankenstein and a magician and a californian babe... It was really similar.

clemsy
Those messages menus are hell.
I guess its better on Xbox Live though i hate hearing some weird voices while playing or realizing that i am playing with a 8 year old kid
Undercooked Sausage
The last time I really got into a Kart was 64, but I did play through Double Dash!! and DS, i was just never freak-good at them.

Basically Super Mario Kart and the DS version are the best ones anyway, although this ones online component is REALLY making me like it. Imagine if we got a bunch of sombies in on this? It'll be awesome.

Get this game when it comes out you guys.
clemsy
Yeah when does it get released in the US.

In europe when dont even know when Smash Brawl will get released.

thats bad
Undercooked Sausage
Yeah, i've really wanted to get a big SOMB brawl game going, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards.

Also, i accidentally semi-bricked my Wii, so until a new system update comes on a disc I can't change my internet settings. Which means mid-may I may not be go online.

Although if i luck out, US mario kart wii will have a firmware update on it so i'll be able to use that to get me back to normal.

Programmer pops question on girlfriend's video game

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Hiding a ring in a bouquet just wasn't enough when a computer programmer decided to pop the question.

Bernie Peng reprogrammed Tammy Li's favorite video game, "Bejeweled," so a ring and a marriage proposal would show up on the screen when she reached a certain score.

Li reached the needed score — and said yes.

The word of the romantic feat last December filtered out after Peng, a financial software programmer, posted details on his blog. The reprogramming was a tricky task and took him a month.

"I thought it was pretty cool, in a nerdy way," Peng told The Star-Ledger of Newark.

The couple plan to marry over Labor Day weekend, and PopCap, the Seattle company that makes "Bejeweled," will fly the couple to Seattle as part of their honeymoon.

"Most video game companies would frown on people manipulating their games," said Garth Chouteau, a spokesman for PopCap.

"But it won him a woman. As a bunch of geeks we have to say, 'Bernie, hats off to you.'"

The company is also supplying copies of "Bejeweled" to hand out as favors to the wedding guests. In the hugely popular game, players score points by swapping gems to form vertical and horizontal chains.

i'm pretty sure i'm going to own you in this. smash bros. was all jokes. m.kart is serious business.

idk i was beating clemsy by a good half a lap when i wasn't dicking around

i am pretty difficult to defeat in a nintendo video game. First person shooters...other shit, yeah, i'm a pushover but I get pretty competitive when it deals with a guy in blue overalls. I even personally know the best Double Dash!! player in the country(total sack of shit, however, sometimes it keeps me up at night that I might've turned out like this guy if i hadn't discovered music or the internet.)

Mario kart multiplayer is mario kart, however, I've never seen the series as a place for competition and more for chucking shit at your friends, so it's all in good fun.

I WILL GET MY REVENGE (eventually)
Andyroo

Picked this up last night, because... I don't know, felt like it was a game I had to spend some time with, even if I don't particularly care for GT or sim racers anymore. But uh, as detailed in the Top Chef thread, it took a fucking hour to install the game on the HDD and then download some gargantuan (or chugtastic) update, so it was 3am before I could even play it. Which I didn't. Maybe tonight.

Otherwise, just finished Teenage Zombies: Attack of the Alien Brain Thingys for DS. Writing my review tonight.

Anyone getting "The World Ends With You"? I was kinda excited about it, but when I saw footage of the game I thought, "What the fuck is going on here?" Now I'm a bit hesitant to get it. Plus I'll be double dipping next week when GTA and Mario Kart drop.

Also, according to Kotaku, "The Red Star" is coming out this week on Wii. I kept hearing good things about this game. Anyone play it on PS2? What's that all about?

It's not -- not this week, at least. They just copied the list from GameSpot, and GS' page for the game doesn't offer any details. None of the major retailers even have a listing for a Wii port. Heard some solid things about the PS2 version, as well, but haven't played.

Reviews for The World Ends With You have been surprisingly great, and it's the type of game I'd certainly consider, but I know better now than to keep buying games I'll never get around to playing (I already did that with Crisis Core). And yeah, I'll be nabbing Mario Kart and GTAIV as well, so I'll pass on TWEWY.

I've only been playing Teenage Zombies -- about to submit my review.
Spiz
Sad, I wanted to check out The Red Star. Fucking Lamespot. I think I'll rent TWEWY then since I don't really have anything to play on DS. I finished Layton, and I'm playing Days of Ruin, but I think I suck at that game, and I'm stuck so I haven't had the urge to play that.
kingsleadhat
Speaking of Gamespot, did they do anything to improve their reputation since firing that one writer for writing a bad review? I haven't gone to that site since that incident, which means this thread is my sole source for gaming news, reviews, etc.
Andyroo
Hard to say. The current editorial staff seems largely comprised of newcomers, since people went off to form Giant Bomb and do other things, and (very) longtime freelance reviewer Frank Provo jumped over to GamesRadar (where I also freelance). Kyle Orland, who had previous run the Video Game Media Watch blog and had an "inside the games media" type column at GameDaily moved his column of that sort to GameSpot, but opinions seem split between "That's ballsy" and "That's ridiculous."

My guess is most people who were pissed about Gerstmann are still pissed, and most who didn't think it was a big deal are still keepin' on. It's not something that can be short-term fixed with some staffing changes. I wasn't a particularly huge fan before, so it's not a big change on my reading habits. I still check review scores regularly and peruse the headlines, but that's about it. I spend enough time reading/writing about games as it is.
