Mario Kart is fucking horrendous. It's become Mario Party on wheels.

Fuck you, Nintendo.

Disagree. I think its very solid, and a vast improvement over Double Dash. My main gripe is that on 150cc or online games, the computer is a bit too generous with power-ups for those who are behind. This creates a disproportionate disadvantage for skilled drivers. But the competitive balance isn't so far out of whack as to completely hamper the experience.

Do I enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the N64 version back in the day? Not even close, but it isn't a trainwreck of a game either.
Damo Suzuki
No way. There are too many power ups on all tiers. Such that skill is rarely involved in the race. You can be a lap ahead of the competition and get gang raped by power ups. But no matter, one golden power up and you're back in first. It's all luck based now.

I would contend that MKDD was better than this Wii shit.
Tracy Jacks
Having played online quite a bit this week the evidence does not support that the game is pure luck. When playing with a group of people the same people tend to win the races or finish in the top of the pack. If it were all luck the results would be more random.

In around an hour of play Thursday night I finished consistently around 3-4th place, getting positive VR points every time but once, when I finished just below the top half. I finished 1st only once. Meanwhile one person finished 1st or 2nd every time. If it were random luck, my results would have been all over the map in stead of consistently good, but not great.

Also the VR point rankings show that it is not all luck. There are people racing with VR points in the 6000-8000+ range as well as people around 4500. If it were random luck, everyone would be closer to 5000.

Yeah, I am not going to believe a console game which relies on copious power-ups to win a race is a game of skill.

After watching my roommate play through MGS1 I decided to give this a spin as my first metal gear game ever. Totally engrossing/addicting/infuriating at parts. Will certainly play 3 next and 4 after it comes out on the PS3.

The boat mission on that game is up there with some of my greatest video game experiences ever I think. That level was just groundbreaking.

Thought there was too many cut scenes as the game went on, but that first level was just as close to perfection as you're ever likely to see. Amazing. Can't wait till I finish uni and catch up on some serious gaming.

I have Halo 3, GTA, HL epidode 2, Portal, Assassins Creed, Vegas 2 and loads of other things to try out. Maybe I'll buy a Wii as well.

whatever assholes my score on mario kart online is like 7000 and i'll be the first to admit the "competition" is a complete joke and the game is utter shit. Damo is competely right

i don't ever see me playing it again

of course better players are going to win, but it's like playing michael jordan one-on-one in hoops except once you fall behind you can start shooting 20-pointers while he can still only shoot twos and threes

yeah he's still probably going to win on average, but it's a ridiculous advantage that might take you to victory once in awhile.

items can be fun but even smash bros lets you turn that shit off, dont know why mario kart hasnt given you the same option.
Tracy Jacks
Playing Michael Jordon one on one would suck. I'm slow, old, fat, and suck so badly at basketball that he'd beat me every time by a huge amount while laughing at me. I wouldn't want to play that game. But it would be super cool if I could get awesome poweups that gave me super speed, power jumps, or even better, an electricity cloud that turned him into a Minnie Michael Jordon so I could laugh at him. I'd probably still lose most of the time since I still suck and Michael Jordon would still be great even if turned into Minnie Michael Jordon or if ink was sprayed in his face. But it would be more fun and I'd win sometimes. Michael Jordon might not have as much fun, but fuck him with his millions.
Undercooked Sausage
well, good for you, but some of us don't suck ass at video games
st. park
the two power-ups that are most annoying are the purple shell and bullet, cause they can really change your position in the race (like from 12th to 3rd or vice verca). the other power ups i don't have a problem with.

anyways, i'm sorta surprised by the fact that i'm already bored with the game, after just one week of play. this is coming from a non-gamer who has never owned a mario kart before in his life. i just thought that the fun would last a bit longer.

I spent about 2 hours reading that entire thread at work.

Yeah, that thread was like the toy's of your childhood thread that everyone else has been getting excited about. I had forgotten just how much of a gamer I used to be. To be completely honest, some of my proudest and happiest moments have come from video games. Like when I spent an entire Spring Break playing Super Mario 64 with my best friend and not stopping until we had received every last star (if I recall, getting 100 coins on Tick-Tock-Clock was the very last one).

But yes. We should do a poll like that here.

I haven't played smash bros with items on after the first week or so of the japanese release.

remakes, even if they were superior, such as Zero Mission for GBA, were not included. The only exception being Resident Evil remake for GCN because it makes the PSX version completely useless besides the PSX's better voice acting. Also, for series that consistently got better with each release but are more or less the same game(Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, Grand Theft Auto, Worms) I only included one entry representing those series.

It's a problem, but you're really overstating it. The bullet shouldn't exist and the first place shell comes up too often. Other then that, it's not too bad. Skill still wins the day. It's a game that needs volitility. Otherwise, its as dull as toast. They went a bit too far in this incarnation with it, but it's in keeping with the Wii ethic of letting everybody play.

Anyways, I've been playing it the past few days and quite enjoying it.

Blue shell, golden mushroom (the most ridiculous game breaker ever in MK), lightning bolt, pow and bullet bill are all available to players in the back of the race. With the only middle of the pack power-ups of use being the giant mushroom, red shell and star. MKW ends up a gang bang of power ups. Power ups which are specifically meant to give the worse driver an advantage. I would go so far as to say you have more of an advantage being last and then power-upping your way to victory.

It's chaos on the course every time out.

Also, looking at my two consecutive post I realize I am old. Complaining about the new Mario Kart with power-ups being tossed around like confetti. Then listing shit like Bard's Tale and X-Com on my top 100. I've fallen out of step with the hot games the kids are playing these days.
Undercooked Sausage
Actually I think your list is far less nostalgic then mine.

Guess I should get on some PC gaming, but I've only had one that's been game-capable for about half a year. My problem with PC gaming is that all the big, critically acclaimed ones seem to be an enormous time-sink and I'm a guy who really doesn't have time for that. I still need to roll through Half-Life 2, but I feel like I should play through the first one again because I can't remember much of it at all.

Possibly the most curious thing about Damo and mine's lists is that technically he voted Super Mario Galaxy higher than I did.
Damo Suzuki
I feel that SMG is the epitome of platform gaming. As if the entire span of the genre culminated in Mario traversing a free-floating planetoid in 3-dimensional space.

It is a game without error. Perfection, if such a thing can exist objectively.

If SMG consisted of collecting the Starman power-up alone it would be counted among the finest games ever created.

Super Mario Galaxy is not a good game. It is sublime.
Undercooked Sausage
Completely agreed. The sheer amazingness of that game cannot be possibly overstated. Though I still prefer the side-scrolling Mario's because they're a bit more accessible to just pick-up and play. Mario Galaxy is on a completely different level than them. It's almost difficult to rank it against the other Mario's because to me 3D and 2D platforming are such vastly different genres. I think perhaps the reason I like Galaxy so much more than it's predecessor on the N64 is that it much more closely resembles the linear gameplay of 2D but still leaving you with complete control over Mario in this vast, beautiful universe. Linearity and Mario just go hand-in-hand. When you're appreciating a product put together by the greatest minds in gaming of all time, doesn't it seem logical for them to guide you?

The wonder and splendor of the visuals, the intricacies and perfect design of the platforming segments, I don't think there's ever been a game where I wanted to just sit back and absorb the absolute genius that was coming from my tv screen; the major dilemma being that when I was playing there was absolutely time to do so because the controller never left my hands. Even when I went and tried to sleep, I couldn't do it. I felt like an eleven year old all over again. Tossing and turning with only thoughts of fire flowers, coins, and princesses dancing around in my head. The difference of course this time I was old enough to get out of bed and go back to the Wii and play some more. There weren't any bedtimes or parents to stop me from playing all night, I was free to indulge myself as much as I wanted. I took in every part of Galaxy in just two days, and in those two days not only was my belief in God reaffirmed, I could swear I was looking right at Him.
Damo Suzuki
That depends on the degree to which you feel SM64 was open ended. I don't think SM64 was quite as open as it seemed at the time. Or even today. Particularly in the upper levels of the tower, when the zones themselves became a series of hierarchal puzzles. Which SMG is basically all about. The planetoid where you run around on land only to hit the button that causes to the planet to shatter and become a water level is almost directly a port of a similar SM64 level. I'm thinking of the one with the seemingly infinite vertical design, star perched at the very top, that you must use gravity and water to reach.

Both SMG and SM64 have a lot in common. Obviously. But if SM64 was Nintendo was showing the world platforming could be done practically in 3-D; SMG was a reminder of those that have yet to catch up 10 years on.

This is the most beautiful thing I have ever read.

Also, accurate.

I swear the greatest sensation to be had in life is running like a maniac around a planetoid juiced up on the Starman power-up.

Transcendent.

Wish I could have that first Starman pick-up back.

Yes, in SM64 it's almost as if they started to run out of steam on their whole goal of creating non-linear environment, as the later stages (Tall, Tall Mountain, Rainbow Ride, and Tick Tock Clock being the most obvious examples) were essentially set on linear courses.

The most amazing thing is as great as those courses are, Miyamoto and his team were still able to reinvent and better these courses that were already more or less approaching perfection. That final stretch in the last Bowser level in Galaxy where you're running and jumping through a warzone of flames, cannon fire, and thwomps was one of the most epic finales i've seen in gaming.

and of course, the music pulled out all the stops, it's shameful that Nintendo took so long to jump onto orchestrating their music as some of the best composers in the field have worked for them. I believe Kondo's only major contribution to the soundtrack was the main hub theme and he still proves to be a master of simplicity even when arranging a melody for an entire orchestra.

you're missing a 28 or a 29, unless you can't decide if Contra or Super C is better?

Tricking the Boo holding a star into the light via a system of trampolines, switches and gravity was one of my greatest video game accomplishments.

Also, dude. How can you have Halo 1 and 2 in the same spot? Two disparate games warrant a ranking each.

Also, also. Halo can't be one of the top ten best FPS' ever. No.
Undercooked Sausage
The best thing ever was over my winter break where I replayed the game with Luigi after I'd get off work every night, and played it casually and chipping away at it. So I got to experience taking it all in at once and also getting to savoring the experience on my second playthrough.

Halo's single-player campaign is fucking miserable with too much downtime and open space, but he might've listed it as high as he did due to the multiplayer aspects of the game.

I had some pretty good times sitting in my buddies basement drinking beers and killing each other in Halo 2. Still can't remember why we stopped that, lance.

Haha, well I'm not serious gamer, so don't take the list too seriously, but in regards to Halo / Halo 2, they have the same sort of associations and memories for me (college dorms, tournaments, etc.), but if I were to choose, I suppose I'd pick Halo 2 based on xbox live, even though I found the original to be more fun.

And while I wouldn't consider them the best FPS, they are my favorite. Mostly due to having a lot of friends who played it.

edit: yeah, definitely a multiplayer game for me. i don't think i even finished the single player campaign for Halo 2

edit2: fixed the Contra mixup

This brings me to a question, how should certain series be ranked? Suppose someone votes for the original John Madden Football, while another person votes for Madden '07.

or such is the case with me, I voted for the original worms while stphone voted for Worms 2. Should certain games be lumped together? Is a vote for Street fighter II hyper fighting the same as a vote for Super Street Fighter II Turbo?

If i had voted for more than one SF, then the entirety of the Vs. series, Street Fighter II and all of it's incarnations, and alpha 2 and 3 would've made my list and kept a lot of more unique interesting stuff off just because I'm a huge street fighter fan.

Never saw this thread til now.

Im a PS3 guy.

Addicted to GTA IV and Warhawk.

Then end.

I contend one should rank the individual games. Not the series themselves. Not all Final Fantasy's were created equal. There is no way to weigh the gameplay of a series vis-a-vis the individual aspects of gameplay that make up a great game. Which is what any top XX videogames list should be concerned with- gameplay and innovation.

In the case of Halo 1 & 2, there were significant changes in gameplay and design between the two. As well as a change in design philosophy w/r/t Halo 2's mulitplayer. Most important of all as far as the Halo games go.

All games should be ranked individually.
Undercooked Sausage
I would definitely agree a Halo/Final Fantasy/Grand Theft Auto should all be ranked individually, as all of these games have an incredibly different style, and a completely different narrative.

My argument is more in the case of Sim City, Wrestlemania, John Madden, or puzzle game franchises.

How would you want to do Tetris? It's been done on just about every platform, but I wouldn't say the game play has changed at all from the original version.
