So Nintendo has a pretty awful E3 yesterday:

- No big, new tentpole annoucement (no Mario, Link, Star Fox, Samus, Kirby, Kid Icarus even, etc) on either the Wii or the DS
- Animal Crossing seems identical to previous versions. No big MMO experience.
- Wii Music seems like a toy with no gaming elements.
- Enhanced motion controller not due to next year. Thank you Nintendo, I have 9 months to wait knowing my current motion control sucks.

After yesterday it's really hard to defend Nintendo against the charges that they have completely abandoned core gamers and are deeply lost in casual-land.

Yeah, they're totally dropping the ball here. I'm quickly losing patience with Nintendo. I was really hoping for a Kid Icarus revamp.

Good god E3 is amazing. Ridiculous amount of amazing titles which will be coming out in the near future.
Andyroo
Working my ass off at E3, having a great trip so far. Nothing has blown my mind game-wise, sadly, but not everything is here. Plus, I'm not hitting as many meetings and pressers as last year, but doing a lot more on-the-spot work (and making hot bucks).

Haven't had a chance to see any of the Nintendo or Sony stuff, but I've heard from a couple people (including one of the head honchos at the outlet I'm primarily covering for) that Wii Music is actually awesome and that the Internet backlash is misplaced.

Anyway. Back to writing.

Joke post right? This is the most pointless E3 in years
James D
Really, well the games I'm pretty psyked about are being shown. Fallout 3, Mirror's Edge, Warhammer, Resi 5, Final Fantasy. Seems pretty cool to me, though I can't say i'm hugely up on most videogame news. E3 is good way for me to catch up.

fallout 3 is going to be awesome, mmorpgs are all the same, resi 5 looks like resi 4 with new textures, and final fantasy XIII doesnt even have a release date yet

nintendo and sonys press conferences did nothing. new animal crossing, wow, with barely any wifi support. how awesome

all sony has to cling to now is god of war 3, you'd think they'd give us some kind of demo

Seems to me that Nintendo just had an exceedingly shitty E3. Unless I missed something. It's pretty sad when you consider that all it takes to make Nintendo fans squeal is announcing a remake of one of 5 or so long standing series.
Undercooked Sausage
like nintendo gives a fuck if they had a shitty E3 or not

Of course Nintendo doesn't care if they have a good E3 or not. They'll do as little as possible as long as they're turning a tidy profit. Maybe they should care. Maybe they're right to not care. The fact remains that I don't see anything on the horizon worth buying for Wii.

I don't really follow gaming news that closely, so a question. I don't get too into many games, but Resident Evil 4 was pretty damn fun. Now 5 is slated, and it's only announced for the 360 and PS-3. 4 was (originally) exclusively on the Gamecube, so why the total shift?

I've seen games released for just the other two platforms, and then later released for Nintendo, so anyone have any opinions as the the chances of the Wii getting RE 5 later on?

I don't follow E3, but I looking at your talk on it, Nintendo didn't do so great...oh well, fact is, I've exclusively bought Nintendo for long enough to change my mind. I'm perfectly happy with the games I already for my Wii.

EDIT- Oh, and that M. Night thing is hilarious, wow, I do not like that man.

This is roughly true. I was surprised at how exactly they're adhering to the RE4 formula, like they're worried changing something might fuck it up and kill its momentum. Adding co-op is great, and fuck, RE4 is one of my all-time favorites, but I can't help but feel like the game design is a bit antiquated at this point.

Didn't get a chance to play it, though. Was working steady until 30 minutes before the show ended, and by the time I walked into Capcom's meeting room, all the demo units were busy and there was a line of 6-7 people.

Tried Bionic Commando. Yikes @ swinging controls.

age of conan is starting to hook me. only problem i've had so far is the social aspect. what kept me hooked on WoW was having people to talk to the entire time i played, but in aoc it feels like a regular rpg where other people are running around trying to kill you. got lvl 25 tonight, no way will i get to 50 by the time i leave for school.
James D
I'm at 47 at the moment and I can feel my interest waning. I will probably go through another phase of 3-4 days of playing and that will be me .

By the way Haid, how good is it when you leave Tortage? When you go to the Kopshief(sp?) province, the game gets ridiculously fun.
MadroXXX
Just entered the underworld in FFIV, probably a little over the halfway mark.

easily the most well-balanced JRPG i have played in...possibly ever. The challenge is exhillirating.

idk, i kind of enjoyed tortage. the desert is a massive gankfest where there are lvl 50s running around in lvl 20-30 zones trampling people to death. got really annoyed yesterday when i ran out to some caravan post for a delivery quest and after spending 10-15 minutes realtime getting there, some faggot lvl 40 thought it would be cool to kill me while i was completing it. nearest rez point was ~500m away with a bunch of angry hyenas, scorpions, and bandits in the way. otherwise, in a group it was fun. sometimes it's easy to just see somebody near you and invite them to a group, most people accept because it makes it much easier to avoid ganking. i probably should have rolled in a pve server where people are usually friendlier.

funny story, i pmed a lvl 50 after he killed me in two hits and he sent back a series of tells apologizing and explaining his motives.
James D
Yeah, there's typically a lot of morons who think ganking someone 20 lvls below them is perfectly acceptable. They just say "this is a pvp server, re-roll pve crybaby" or something. As Damo correctly said a bunch of pages back and as you seem to be catching on, grouping up is the way to go.

How are you finding the assassin overall?

Ennui
i'm finding it alright. however, after being in a few groups i had the desire to reroll a class that can actually wear some armor, my hp drops like $1 hookers to their knees. on the other hand, it's great when i have a tank because my damage is awesome, sometimes a caster will only have time to get one hit in.

one problem i'm having is the button layout for switching weapon sets. three times or something i've pulled a creep with my bow and tried to switch to my daggers with shift+r but instead it does the hotkey for replying to a tell ® and now instead of hitting people im typing 543823 to the last person who pmed me and by the time i realize i've aggroed somebody else because i can't move properly and i'm down to half health trying to use the mouse while hitting backspace to get out of chat. i manage to get one guy down to half health and then i'm gone. i need to remap that shit pronto.

i spent all day at home today because i'm grounded but didn't play at all. i feel kind of like this game isn't worth the $50 +subscription right now and i'm not going to mind canceling when school begins. whenever i pick it up i play for 2 hours or so straight, but there's not really much of an urge
Ennui
just got 3 more lvls
holy crap it's really fun to sneak up behind a HoX and 1hit them with a slow death strike. my feelings are so mixed about this game.

So now that Okami and ICO are the only games I'm able to play, I decided on a couple things.

1) ICO sucks. Or I suck at ICO. Probably more the latter than the former, really, but I hate having that stupid AI girl get swallowed up by one of those shadow creatures and then having to start a few screens back, which means having to platform and solve "puzzles" that I've already solved three times... again. I've wanted to get through it at least once just because it turned out to really be a sequel or whatever to Shadow of the Colossus, one of my favorite games of all-time. I just don't think I have the patience for screwing up and redoing the same thing over and over and over again. Especially not when I've gotten so used to saving all the time on other games. Hopefully I won't need any knowledge of the game if I'm ever to play Team ICO's next game because I'm selling it online. You know, the one they'll say won't be related to ICO or SOTC but will later be revealed to take place between those games later on.

Okami is fun though... but I might not keep it once I'm through with it. It's a cool game, but I just like using the same cash towards something else I can play, and I don't see Okami having much replay value. I have an impossible time going back to games that I've thought had plenty of replay value.

Should be getting my fixed/refurbished 360 back in a week's time, with plenty of time to spare before the August-November onslaught.

So the 8-bit MegaMan 9 seems pretty intriguing. The box art is awesome.

Efrim
Yeah, Megaman 9 is some thrilling game news. It'll be like a remake where they don't even bother with the whole remaking thing. Tired, sad nostalgia mining. Too much of that in gaming these days.

I dunno. Those games didn't blow me away on the whole Megaman Anniversary package Capcom put together for the XBOX a few years ago. They kinda sucked. I dig the 8-bit throwback, plus the fact that its going to be downloadable for all 3 consoles. I'll probably use my Wii though, just out of loyalty to the big N's history with the series.
MadroXXX
7 sucks but you're an idiot if you don't realize that megaman 8 had the best 2d sprite-based graphics when it was released in 1996.

8-bit "throwback" is such a lazy fucking excuse. a giant company like capcom has the resources to do great things, megaman 9 looks like it could be made by me with a megaman 2 level editor and a bottle of jack daniels

You have to be kidding me. Yeah, you definitely suck at ICO, as I never once ran into the problems you mentioned. I always thought the appearance of the underworld creatures was always very well balanced within the puzzle-solving. It was never overbearing. And the level design... god lord. It's perfection.

BRILLIANT GAME.

Pink inspired me to pick of FFIV for DS. I played that game to shit on an SNES emulator about 10 years ago or so. And again about 5 years ago. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I'm currently enjoying it. So good, though. The little enhancements really add a lot to the DS version, too.

My first Official Xbox Magazine review. Went up today and will be in the October issue. Working on my next one for them now, also reviewing a crappy game for another outlet. And working on various feature articles. Have an article in October's Nintendo Power as well.

Finally getting into a reasonable schedule, though, so hoping to play something for fun again soon. Picked up Soul Calibur IV and just not feeling it thus far. Also grabbed Blast Works for Wii -- hoping that's fun.

I rented it awhile back, and uhhhhh...it's fun if you're planning on creating stuff. I wasn't looking forward to that as much as I was downloading other peoples created content, but I wish you could just get stuff in game. Rather, you have to go to a web site, register you system code, search for things, queue them up on the web site, and then you can download stuff. The only thing kinda cool about it is that you can change up what the game looks like, and how it plays. If you don't change anything it's really boring.

Anyone playing Geo Wars 2? I know Andy got it. My eyes hurt so much, but I'm really enjoying it. Looking forward to the rest of the month's XBLA releases.

I agree, very nice review, this is actually the game I have played most recently, though I've been, finally, getting into Rock Band with my friends a lot too. And, of course, I still play a lot of Halo 3. The one game I am dying to pick up and play through again, if I can spend the money, is Bioshock. God, that game blew me away.

If I had to choose one game not to get this month that would be Galaga Leigons just because I know the least about it compared to all the other releases. However, if the demo is good I'll probably end up getting everything this month. That's so much money though. Maybe I'll skip Bionic Commando: Rearmed. I never finished the first one, and I don't know if this one will grab me. I'm definitely not skipping Castle Crashers, and Braid.
