I bought it (and played through it) at launch way back. It was fun at the time but, in retrospect as a classic platformer, it doesn't hold much weight. Too repetitious in its design and execution. Had none of the peak moments of, say, Mario or Banjo-Kazooie.
I'd put Spyro down with DK64 and Ape Escape. Pleasant, but not transcendent.

anyone played "braid" to completion... or currently doing so?
i'm on world 4 now, and man, this is good stuff... a pretty short game, i'm sure, but worth the purchase in artistry and the cleverness in game mechanics.
I'm really enjoying the game too. The game never tells you anything, and that can either be frustrating, or amazing because figuring out stuff on your own is the best feeling.
World 4 is craaaaazy, though I find myself really stumped. I mean there are areas where I know what I'm supposed to do, and I continally flub the execution, so it's frustrating. I still need a single puzzle piece in World 3, and I have no idea how to do that one puzzle.
I want to give this game more time, but I've still been playing GW2. Can't stop. I'll go for hours muttering, "fuck work. Stupid purple piece. Stupid crackhead green squares." I need to beat everyone on my friends list. I can't help it. BC: Rearmed is so much fun too, but I'm almost at the end of that. I can fit more Braid time after that, but Castle Crashers next week. We have to get a SOMB Game night for that game.
I d/led bc:rearmed the same night I did "braid." man. some of the criticism was spot on with control. the xbox has no NES d-pad. directionals piss me off. i should give it more time to adjust, I guess. i kept going back to "braid."
The xbox dpad pretty much kills BC reloaded, shame cause the new challenge rooms look fun. Supposedly there's some limited edition promotional xbox controller out there with a new/better dpad....i'm hoping they put it into real production and start selling em.
C'mon use the analog stick! It's fine. If yu really care, mod your dpads. Or just wait for the new 360 contollers.
Anyone playing Castle Crashers? Not fun if you're alone, but I hear people are having issues crating multiplayer games. Hopefully the'll fix that ASAP.

I'm playing Castle Crashers....haven't tried online yet, i'm hearing people are getting their weapon/animal discoveries erased from playing multiplayer so i've just been doing single player for now. So, I stopped playing Mass Effect awhile back cause I was bored out of my mind. I picked it up again tonight and played for a little bit and stopped because... I was bored out of my mind. I just could not stomach the sheer number of uninteresting conversations, nonstrategic gun fights, or unending elevator rides any longer.
Games will never be taken seriously as an artform as long as tedious (though polished) mediocrity like Mass Effect gets rave reviews.

Ogawa I completely agree with you about Mass Effect. It got insane reviews, and one night I was looking for something really revolutionary in gaming... so I went and blew 60 dollars on it. Big mistake. That game isn't anywhere near the masterpiece people say it is. I'm going to have to download Braid and Castle Crashers for some real fun. And I've never played any of the old Marios, so I think I'm going to download Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros 3 on the Wii as well. And A Link to the Past. Super Metroid is kind of letting me down.

Bioshock and Mass Effect were both solid games. Not perfect by any measure, particularly Mass Effect. I preferred the KOTOR games, probably even the incredibly glitchy and unfinished second game. Still fun though. Bioshock's atmosphere was at a level few games can match, with very fun gameplay mechanics and a good story. It did feel a little rushed at the end, even the creator of the game will now admit that, but I loved it. Hating on Bioshock is pretty much like hating on video games in general to me. I can't understand it.

I can see that. I think what really captivated people about the game was the setting. Rapture is a beautiful, and haunting setting. Exploring the world, as well as listening to all the audio logs kept my interest in the game, but I do admit that the gameplay wasn't the greatest. After the first few Big Daddy encounters, the fear, or the edginess(sp?) sort of wore off. The splicers never gave you too much trouble either.
I still need to finish Half Life 2. It's on my shame pile.
I just remember being frustrated with Mass Effect all the time. Fuck driving that tank. I did get more into it at the end, but I couldn't help but groan at many moments in the game where I felt like the shooting was broken. I do admit to sucking at games, but c'mon...
So dissapointed that the Castle Crashers multiplayer is broken. I hope they patch it soon because I haven't even tried multiplayer yet, and I'm sure it's way more fun with co-op.

The tank was half of the reason that Massive Effect sucked. Some of the levels went on and on, and they weren't fun at all. The setting in that game was pretty cool though. Bioshock... the audio clips were pretty cheesy to me. Bioshock is kind of like the Waterworld of videogaming to me. I don't want to explain that comparison, but it works for me in a strange way. I thought the setting was cool, but the artistic design was too corny. I couldn't get into it because it was too cartoonish. The reason I compare it to Half Life 2 is because they are both FPS (though relatively different), but the artistic design in Half Life 2 was incredible in it's hard edged science fiction ways. That game made me feel like I was really in the middle of something bigger. Bioshock for whatever reason failed to do this, and the gameplay and puzzles were a bit weak I thought. But God, Half Life 2 is a great game. You need to play it soon, the Orange Box is fantastic. Portal too.

Half Life 2 is amazing. I have to say I wish they would go back to releasing a full game. I don't think the EP style is working. Also I think Valve is losing it a bit in terms of multiplayer. I miss a TFC type of game (TF2 doesn'rt even come close IMHO due to lack of gamemodes) as well as a regular DM game as brilliant as HL1DM.

Because the old games are brilliant. They rank with Planescape: Torment and Ultima VII as some of the finest CRPGs of all time. The conversations, the atmosphere, the quests, the storylines, the combat. All of it is top-notch and still incredibly fun to play. If you're not biased against older games then by all means pick them up. Used copies are fairly prevalent, as are torrents if you're so inclined.

Fallout 1 & 2 were like that. The choices you made with your character mattered. Gaining a level provided a noticeable improvement in capabilities rather than an incremental one. There were multiple ways to complete quests -- conversation, stealth, firepower. The decisions you made affected the outcome of the game. Combat was turn-based and strategic.
I enjoyed Oblivion and Bioshock initially, but got bored and didn't finish either. I'm sure I'll enjoy Fallout 3, but I'm not expecting a true spiritual sequel to the original Fallouts.

The rest of the game is "babies first RTS/WoW/Civilization"
the space phase is pretty cool, though, definitely overhyped and I can't see it having the longevity of Wrights other work, the real strength of the game is the creature designer but I even feel that's sort of limiting. Sure, you can build all these nice buildings and stuff but other than occasionally seeing them the game has you too busy fending off rival empires or terraforming(most annoying part of the game) planets to really even give you time to worry about it.
