So my sister is asking for guitar hero for Wii for Christmas.

What do I need to get to get her the game and necessary guitars and still spend the least coin?

Thanks dudes.
Guy
Mr Fat Stomach, You can get away with the game and guitar combo for about $80. A good brother would get his sister Guitar Hero World Tour and spend the $190.

So I've been playing Fallout 3 over the last couple months and have been loving it. Last night I got one of those crippling glitches that completes stops my progress in the game beyond my control. 75 hours clocked, about to start the last mission of the game. Dammit.
Huckle
You can't just go and re-load a previous save? I would be pretty bummed. I keep reading about all these crashes and glitches and have been fortunate to have it operate flawlessly for 50+ hours (playing on a 360).
Well, if you're about to do the final mission, you're almost done anyhow. I "finished" it at around hour 25 but went back to a previous save (which I'd done before getting sucked into the finale) and am now just visiting all the various locations. I lived at Seward Square behind the Capitol for 10+ years so it was awesome to run around that area. Wasn't too faithful to the neighborhood but it was cool seeing all of the rowhouses and such, which are pretty accurate.
Great game. I bought the 360 just for F03 and it was a good deal. Now... trying to figure out what will come next when I finally wrap up F03. Thinking Bioshock or Call of Duty 4.
JeffTweedysFatStomach
I bought Viewtiful Joe for Gamecube last night for 99 cents - a steal if you ask me. It's a great little game and I look to spend my last night before the holiday madness taking it in tonight.

I loaded up another save from two hours previously (since I can waste two hours just exploring in this game during a mission), and the same glitched occurred. I'm not the only one this has happened to. You know when you're supposed to go back to the Citadel to talk to Lyons in The American Dream mission? His daughter has a line of dialog, then you're supposed to approach and they'll talk to you. The glitch is that nobody does. Ever. You lose control of your character because it's goes in dialog mode but nothing ever happens. The only other thing I can think of is to go back to a save point PRIOR to the mission even starting (which might mean before Vault 87), and I... don't really want to replay all that and then still have it not work. I'm probably better off waiting for the patch, which will hopefully come out before the Alaska DLC next month. I've got other games to finish in the meantime: Fable II, Prince of Persia, Persona 3: FES...

I'm thinking about picking up Left 4 Dead if I can talk a few of my buddies to get it. Is there any activity on Live right now, or is it already dropping off?

I don't know about the Live aspect, but Left 4 Dead is DEFINITELY worth the purchase. That game is so much fun. I'm not a big gamer with XBox, but it was a lot of fun playing during study breaks for finals week. I could play that game for days. Too bad I sucked.

For the few weeks that I played it, the 360 was never hooked up to the Internet. We focused on the campaign part of the game. I know on Live, you can play as either zombies or humans and battle 4 on 4 or something. That would be kickass to be one of the zombies, a royalty not given for the campaign. But I think if you don't have Live, you should still check it out. At least rent it.

Imported the Asian edition. And then Sony finally announced a NA release for early February, so not that much of an advantage for importing, but excited to play it anyway. First is one of my absolute faves on PSP.

I finished this game up not too long ago. It's definitely fun and an amazing experience overall, but it has to be one of the most difficult games I've ever played. I suffered severe flashbacks to TMNT and Ninja Gaiden for NES.

I beat Prince of Persia last night, making it the first game I've beaten in a good six months or so. People have been complaining that the game is too easy and repetitive, and in a sense they're right. But I liked it a lot. But then, I think I might be incapable of not liking a Prince of Persia game since 2003 (even Warrior Within).

I got a Wii for Christmas, and bought Okami yesterday. This game is solid. Also got Zack & Wiki, Barbaros' Treasure of something. Haven't got too into that yet, but an article of 20 Wii games to own told me to get it. Happy to finally get back into gaming, my Gamecube just wasn't cutting it anymore.

Been playing a little Wizardry 8 these past few days. Much more enjoyably than more recent releases like Fallout 3, which is supposed to be some sort of pinnacle of gaming but is really quite tedious.

Played a little Rock Band tonight with friends. What a perfect game to play. What an exuberant and joyful game.

You realize all of the games that you list after Fallout 3 are just going to collect dust if you play it first.

I just got Bioshock for Xmas, but other than playing the first level (Which was insanely awesome), it still hasn't pulled me away from Fallout.

Nope -- it's pretty self-contained. Get it. Easily the best in the franchise and seems pretty much consensus that it's one of top handful of games from the last few years. I played through it on GameCube when it first came out, but I actually really like the Wii version's control scheme. Only played a few hours of that version, but I held onto it since I'd sold the GC one ages ago.

So, I'm thinking of finally giving up PC gaming. Just not sure if I want to do the video card upgrade thing anymore, not sure of the value. I really don't play too many PC games these days. My PC is fast, have a kick ass monitor, etc but it's time for a new gfx card. I'm seriously considering not even bothering and instead using the $250 for an Xbox 360 instead, and a Live membership. The games I mostly love to play are Valve games and the occasional good FPS, GTA, or golf and bowling on the Wii.

Can anyone with an Xbox 360 and a PC chime in? I'm kinda tired of spending $250 on a gfx card and having it be obsolete a year later. Seems the Xbox is the better bang for the buck, especially via HDMI 1080p.
Tongue-Tied
I used to PC game a lot.

Then i realized that I had to keep upgrading shit to play games and it got old. and it cost too much money.

i don't game on my PC at all anymore...and strictly game on the 360. I love it. Get XBOX Live. Well worth it.

Speaking of PC gaming, Steam has a shitload of deals through January 2nd if anyone is interested. Only bad thing is that you have to download through Steam, which can be painfully slow:

http://store.steampowered.com/holidaysale

Bioshock, for example, is $5.
Huckle
I've been a PC gamer for many years, primarily FPS and RPGs but also got tired of the constant need for upgrades. It just kinda sucks that a year after buying a PC, I'm still having to study the System Reqs columns and not knowing for sure if something is going to work or not. And I have bought PC games that ended up not working. The beauty of the console is there's no guesswork there. If the box says "360" on it, it will work.

So after skipping pretty much every generation of gaming console, I said fuck it and bought the 360 a few months ago. My hands-on experience is limited because the only game I've played much of is Fallout 3, which has FPS elements to it but isn't really because when you get into combat, you can 'stop' the action with the targeting system. This is key because transitioning from the PC keyboard/mouse set-up to a handheld controller has been murder on me. I was a master of the keyboard/mouse and could be jumping and dancing all over the place while keeping my crosshairs steady and dead aimed. With the console controller, I can barely hit the side of a house because I'm constantly shifting to the left, ooops too far, shift to the right, no, not that way. So I end up fighting the set-up rather than the game and it's frustrating.

That said, I'm slowly getting better and I've enjoyed FO3 so much that I'm very glad I made the switch.

The $300 arcade pack, through Amazon, was the best deal because you get the 60 gig harddrive, 2 average games and all the standard stuff, with no sales tax and it was delivered free in 2 days.

Thx for the feedback. I'm either buying an EVGA 9800 GTX+ tonight or the Xbox 360 Arcade. Both are the same price. I saw those deals on Steam too, pretty sick. If I buy the 9800 GTX+ it's still not the high end card, lol. Then I need to find the right drivers and hope thye don't fuck up my colors which I have set perfectly for my work apps. Also, I may need to upgrade my PSU to run the thing properly. Or, I can just buy the 360 with GTA IV. The games I'm primarily looking at on both Pc and Xbox 360 are COD:World at War and GTA IV. What really attracts me to the PC version of GTA IV is the open world mayhem mode which sounds like it will be addicting as crack. My exact ideal type of online play (hunting other players over large and realistic landscapes). However, the PC version comes withs ecuROM which is terrible, and you have to apply for two "live" group systems and have them running, so it's like triple DRM. The online race modes sound insanely good as well.

If you're planning on getting an Xbox 360 (which I recommend as a console gamer), be sure to get one with a hard drive, which is the Xbox 360 Pro (not Arcade) that sells for $300. Or the Elite, which is $400, but if you're just getting into console gaming, you may not want to go all-out for the extra hard drive space and black finish.

As for GTA on 360, the upside is platform-specific downloadable episodes coming next year, but I've heard the online community on consoles is pretty much kaput, which is shocking considering how many copies were sold. It may have picked up again with Christmas and the fact that you can own it for $30 or less.

World at War is nice on 360, btw -- I reviewed it last month (http://www.greenpixels.com/articles/reviews/1956/Call-of-Duty-World-at-War-Review), but it's IGN's site for casual/mainstream gamers, so the article doesn't go into too many specifics. My general take: not the most memorable iteration, but if you're a COD fan, there's absolutely no reason to miss it. Great online play to boot.

Started Mass Effect tonight. About two hours in.

Holy shit. I'm in love. Knights of The Old Republic (XBOX) is like my favorite game of all time. I got it when I was like a freshman in high school and played it like 8 hours a day until I beat it. This gives me a similar addicting feeling. The story has me already immersed. The combat is solid, I picked "Vanguard" because it seemed like a good mix. So I use my powers...and then pistol/shotgun. So...that means shotgun. Love the atmosphere of this one...and I think the score is incredibly good...completing the full sci-fi experience. Can't wait to play through this one.

Isn't this game like 30 hours long? Or something like that?

Thanks I checked out both tonight at Best buy and Tiger Direct. The fact that the online component of GTA IV on the 360 is dying swings me to the PC. Downloading GTA IV on Steam now ($44 and no tax). I'm not really into a lot of games, just a few and it made no sense to really jump into the 360 at this point. Plus, some EVGA cards are now shipping with COD:World at War which makes the choice even easier.
