I haven't had a chance to read this whole thread, but is there anyone into PC sports text sims? Front Office Football, PureSim Baseball, etc. There are a number of solid pro and college sports sims out there that focus on accuracy and behind the scenes stuff that makes Madden look silly. But of course, these games don't have flashy (or in some cases, any) graphics.
if these games are anything like NFL Head Coach that came out a few months back for PS2/Xbox, then yeah, I gave it a shot and I could not get into it for the life of me. I did try but by the end I wanted to pull my hair out.
ParticleHustler
Aug 31 2006, 12:06 PM
I've heard awful, awful things about that game. It may be similar, but the other games are leaps and bounds better. But if you're talking style, then it is closer to text sims than Madden is.
I just have no interest in joystick jockey games, but running a front office is fun to me. Dealing with player contracts, salary caps, trades, drafting, etc. The actual games are almost secondary to the main "action" of the game.

yeah, i do like things that require actual thinking and strategizing oddly enough. i figure if there was a game like that involving baseball, i would be all over it and probably devote more of my life to it than not.
but yeah, Head Coach was attrocious and sort of soured me on even the concept of the "front office" game. one of the most bland experiences of my life.

Glad you're enjoying Madden, bud.
I finished Barnyard (GC) last night and reviewed it... not bad at all, really. I need to start Rule of Rose (PS2) soon, but I may wait until Monday. It ships on September 12th, so I need to finish it by then.
Also have Tekken: Dark Resurrection and Juiced Eliminator for PSP to work on, along with a preview build of WTF: Work Time Fun. Hoping to see some other stuff anyday, as well. Oh, LocoRoco for PSP next week. Amped on that.

Got a preview copy of this for WorthPlaying last week. Writing it now. Bizarre game... kinda doubt it can maintain one's interest for more than a couple of hours. I guess we'll see; I've got a review copy coming for Static, haha.

Started playing Rule of Rose over the weekend. Best word to describe it? Adequate. Aside from the great CG/soundtrack.

Sep 9 2006, 04:23 AM
Still working on Rule of Rose. Hasn't gotten much more exciting. If it continues at this pace, I'm looking at a two star rating (out of four). I just saw that Ace Gamez gave it a 9/10, so I don't know what the hell they're seeing that I'm not. Then again, I don't always agree with their reviews. Also working on this:

Unimpressive. Not a whole lot of fun when your cars take enough damage that you have to restart. Doesn't find the subtle balance of speed and realism. These should arrive tomorrow or Monday:

Totally psyched for LocoRoco. I put in a special request for it at WorthPlaying. Pac-Man World Rally should be fun... reviews aren't great, but I've enjoyed bad kart racers before (Chocobo Racing, anyone?). As for Bomberman... eh... one of the worst-reviewed games of the year. I may pass it off to someone else if other things come in.

Yeah, I reserved mine since Capcom are stingy with review copies. I'll have to make sure I clear my gaming schedule a bit if I'm to make any progress on it... might have to pass that Bomberman on to you, Derek.
Oh, and LocoRoco is friggin' awesome. It reminds me a lot of Katamari Damacy -- simple concept, brilliant execution, and a bizarro presentation. I'm having a blast with it.

Yeah, the news leaked right around midnight last night. First the U.S. launch news, then the Japanese news... then the U.S. stuff was confirmed this morning. I'm fine with the $250 price, considering the included game (I probably would have bought it anyway). $60 to get a second controller (with attachment) seems a bit much, though. I guess motion sensing blah blah blah costs more dollars.
And fucking Metroid was delayed. Which is probably a good thing, because I haven't played Echoes yet.

This IS good news in a way, cuz i as well have yet to beat Echoes. Mostly because my stupid Cube is on the fritz, and the game keeps freezing before i have the chance to save. With the Wii's ability to read GC discs, i will be able to beat the game (without rebuying it no less!) before i move on to Corruption. That is, if my time isnt completely taken up with Twilight Princess, which seems very likely.

Got my wisdom teeth removed yesterday, but I'm in remarkably good shape and haven't had to take vicodin yet. The plus side here is that it still makes for a good excuse to bail on my school obligations on Monday and maybe Tuesday. Which is grand, because Okami and Mega Man ZX should be showing up today, and I need to make a dent in Okami ASAP (it's about 40 hours long, and I promised a review for 9/28).
Been playing Pac-Man World Rally for the last couple of days. Hoping to get that reviewed today or tomorrow. It's everything you'd expect from a licensed cash-grab, but honestly not bad. Just not particularly good. And certainly not worth $30.

Borrowed a friend's GC last week. I never put too much time into the system before. But my friend has been enthralled with 360, so her GC has been collecting dust.
I wanted to try Resident Evil 4 to see if it lived up to the hype. Holy hell it has.
Great game. Have Mario Sunshine and the Zelda game sitting unopened in their cases because I don't feel like turning off RE4. Just beat that big lake monster thing. Awesomeness.
Anything else I should bother checking out while I have the system?

Resident Evil 4 was my favorite game of last year, and probably the last time I seriously played a game on the system that I wasn't reviewing. Bought it on a whim when it came out and beat it between Friday and Sunday night of a weekend. I only left my dormroom to eat and use the bathroom. Amazing.
Metroid Prime is an all-time fave. Here's another one:

I've got Smash Bros. Melee as well. Messed around with it for a little bit. Seems pretty dumb. Terrible v.o. / cheesy japanimation / mindless button mashing.
I must be missing something.
I'm an XBOX owner. Never missed a built-in harddrive so much. This whole memory card thing really blows for saving games. The memory card my friend loaned me is basically full, so I can only save one game at time. Took a break from RE4 to test drive Sunshine, only to learn I couldn't save my game. Ugh.
Thanks for the recommendations.

Just delete his shit. His bad for not doing it himself.

Dudes, Okami is awesome. It's like watching an incredible anime... Hakkenden: Dog Warriors with a dash of Princess Mononoke. I'm about five hours deep. Gotta finish my review in ten days, so I'll be playing steadily until then (said to be 40 hours long).

Yeah, it's possible... I used to burn games before I was old enough to get a job, but I wouldn't know where to start now. We used to use IRC back in the day, but you can probably torrent that shit now... assuming websites still have Dreamcast games up.

Okay. This may be a dumb question, but whatever...
I'm moving in with an anti-television whippersnapper when I get to Seattle. The television part doesn't really bother me, because I don't really USE a tv unless it's DVDs or shows that I've downloaded or Youtubed.
However, this rules out video games. Question is: (i'm selling my desktop and getting a laptop) is there any kinda tool or peripheral to which I can attach A/V cables to a laptop? I ask because I'd like to bring my PS2 along, what with Okami and a few other games I'd like to play.
Okay. That's the question.
Thanks.

Sep 18 2006, 06:32 PM
You can get a VGA Adapter for most systems to hook up to a standard computer monitor, but I'm not sure if the same holds true for the screen of a laptop. Perhaps someone else can chime in on this.
Otherwise, see if you can pick up a secondhand TV somewhere along the way. Drop $50 or less on something like that and it'll be more universal than buying a couple of $30 cables for whatever systems you want to use.

So I guess EB/Gamestop aren't taking pre-orders for the Wii until mid-October, which is when each store will find out how many units they're actually going to get. Also, the website hints at the whole package deal thing they sprung on people for the 360 launch. Personally, I'm ok with that, as I was going to buy a few games with it anyhow.
Also, Trauma Center for the DS is the funnest/hardest game I've played in years.

Thats the badger. I think Winning Eleven 10 is the precursor to PES6 but WE9 (pictured above) has that charming picture of John ''we'll fight them on the beaches'' Terry on the front so its a tough choice.
