While those comments on the gamecube are true, they may be out of date. I'm swamped with people asking me if I sell Game Cube games, and then saying..."man, I can't find them anywhere" (We don't have them either).
Then again, online you might be OK, and you might not need to be buying them a wide array of games.

All this talk of last gen counsels just reminded me of an interesting
article on old PS1s. I guess a lot of hifi guys have been raving about the sound quality from old PS1 units (plus the fact that you can get them for about 20 bucks on ebay). The reviewer said the sound is on par with a top of the line Sony SACD player (and better than a Pioneer dvd/cd/sacd player).
Anyway, I know this isn't technically gaming, so maybe it doesn't belong in this thread, but it still seems kind of appropriate.

I don't think I've ever walked into a major retailer that didn't sell Gamecube games. I mean, christ, the pre-orders for Twilight Princess for the Cube have to be pretty substantial.

No issues with the GameCube, though there certainly aren't as many games, and there are only a few left on the horizon. Unlike the PlayStation 2, which will probably be supported (at least in part) for the next three years, I doubt we will see more than 20 games released for the GameCube next year. The only other negative worth noting is that because the GameCube was not nearly as popular as the PlayStation 2, the used games for it will cost more as opposed to their PS2 counterparts.
It all boils down to what you want the system for. True, if you think they'll do a lot of multiplayer gaming, then the GameCube is a solid option. It has all the Madden games, as well as Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Mario this, Mario that, Mario whatever. It's also fairly cheap, with used systems going for somewhere in the $60-80 range, with new ones for $100 (usually with a game, too).
The PlayStation 2 has a lot more versatility with its library of games, and will still have new releases for a while. If three-player action is not absolutely essential to you, I'd still recommend a PlayStation 2. Of the last-gen systems, I definitely got the most use out of the PlayStation 2 (and the least out of the GameCube, sadly -- just not enough AAA titles). Sorry if this feels like an anti-Cube post. I had some incredible times with the system (Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes), just not enough of them.
Dan - Doesn't the hype for Twilight Princess on the Cube seem really underwhelming at this point? Maybe it just got lost in the shuffle with the Wii, but I just don't expect a huge amount of people to still pick it up the Cube version. I mean, it'll definitely be the top-selling Cube game of the next few months... but that's not really an accomplishment.

Like I said, got me. It's not like there's not a target, best buy, circuit city and 3 gamestops within 3 miles...but people always come in saying that they can't find them aaaaanywhere.
Yeah, listen to Sausage. Especially the bit about Mario Party and to a lesser extent Smash Bros. Recently I've plugged the N64 back just to play Mario Party with my friends. Geez that game is fucking righteous. But it really jeopardises friendships. My friend strangled me with a bag strap when I broke the alliance and stole his star right near the end.

Interesting. A PS1 served as the 4th and final CD player in my solo Zaireeka listening party
And you really can't go wrong with either the PS2 or Gamecube. If they're looking for football games though, PS2 is probably better, as the Gamecube's controller is a little clunky for those. On the flip side, speaking of controllers, Gamecube has a very sweet wireless controller called the Wavebird. If you are planning on having 3+ controllers, it's a must to avoid wire hell

Twilight Princess on the Gamecube is going to be huge. There will only be 1 million Wiis sold in the US this year. How many Gamecubes are in the US? I don't know the number but it's got to be over 20 million. Even if all the Wii players have Zelda and only a fraction of the Gamecube people get it, there will still be 2-5 times more Zelda players on the Cube than the Wii.
Oh, and Twilight Princess is awsome. About the start the 4th dungeon. I haven't enjoyed a Gamecube/Wii game this much since Resident Evil 4, and that is a very strong statement. And Twilight Princess is better.

Just 21.2 million GameCube systems have been sold, worldwide. It wasn't really a hit. Each Nintendo system has sold less than its predecessor... the NES is still their highest-selling system ever. Maybe the Wii will change that.

so, assuming I have no intention of getting another game system for many years, I should likely stick with the Play Station 2, if for no other reason than there are more games available, and will continue to be more new games available for quite awhile, while the game cube is fading and ultimately will be harder to get games for.
I was wondering about the wireless controller issue. Also, I know there are tons of controllers out there. Any recommendations that will be easy for kids to use, not crazy expensive, yadda yadda yadda

Dec 5 2006, 02:00 AM
The only great wireless controllers for the PS2 are by Logitech, and those are $40+. Just stick with the wired official controllers from Sony (~$25).
I'd stick with the PlayStation 2 if those are your intentions. The GameCube looks to have maybe ten titles left in its lifespan (Wikipedia says eight), while the PS2 will continue to have new games for a couple of years.

No new games for the Ps2/Gamecube will be any good, however. The 2006 Christmas season is the least time you'll see anything of worth come out for that system generation.
Though I've heard that God Of War II will be a PS2 title after all.

I really don't think I care if I can't get the new latest and greatest games. I don't think my son will ever be a "gamer" and I'm not sure I want him to be. As long as there's a decent supply of good games, I think that's all that matters. And I suspect getting used games and/or new but out of date games will continue to be easier for PS2 than gamecube. Am I wrong on that? I'm basing it purely on this thread.
One more fact. My 7 year old daughter has explicitly stated she doesn't want this game system at all. My older daughter seems on the fence. I think my son will usually be playing by himself, which makes the PS2 seem to be the one to go with.

I've been playing this a lot lately online. I slowly am getting better and narrowing my margin of defeat to the single digits. A few days ago I blew a 12 point lead with 2-minutes to go in the forth quarter of a game. Needless to say, the kid who I lost to berated me in an audio message he sent me shortly after the game. I deserved it.

I've also been playing this on Live a lot and I am definitely no good at it. My record is 6 and 27 , even though I almost won a tag team championship online as Mr. Perfect in a hellacious Ladder Match I had last night. This game rules only for the online playability and features. The rest of the game is nothing more than a rehashing of previous titles in the series with minimal noticable improvements or additions. It's an ok game overall, I suppose, but the onlune playability makes this thing really great.
Oh yeah, and YIKES!, I saw you on teh Live last night and was all gonna send you a message saying "sup" but I got lazy and unmotivated to punch in all of them there letters. Next time I see you on there, though, you betta' believe that I am going to challenge you to some hardcore Uno battling.

Fuck that text nonsense.
Actually, it's probably fine. But when I was playing the game, GameFAQs only had a guide for the Japanese version and it was confusing as fuck. The SuperGuide may not be as ultra-detailed, but it's more segmented and touches on all the necessary points. It's easier to find where you're at then in a large blob of text.
Anywho. I've played about 90 minutes of Elebits and have found it to be distressingly boring. I'm not even sure how long it is, but this could be an arduous adventure. Super Swing Golf isn't terrible, but it isn't a very fluid game of golf... and putting has hella issues.

Actually played a bit of Elebits tonight at a friend's house, as it was a Chaunukah gift for the kids.
At first blush, it seems like nothing more than a tech demo for the Wii controler scheme Semi-interesting premise, somewhat fun to throw things around, but unless things get unlocked further in, not much of a game. Very similar in feel to the early DS games, that seemed like tech demos for the touchscreen, as opposed to fully fleshed out games.

yeah, i absolutely adore the whole gamerscore system. i constantly am checking what achievements i have unlocked against other people.
and in sports games, especially, it encourages you to get out and use other teams and players and play the game in a different style, a lot of the time. normally i would only play nba 2k7 as the bulls or the mavs, but now i can get points if i score 35 points with dwayne wade or if i have the spurs beat the mavs or something like that. so it really helps me to play different ways. great idea, xbox!

I know the Wii does not and I've read that the PS3 does not either. I'm particularly suprised tha the Wii does not have this, as their Mii system seems set up for this capability. Who knows what firmware updates may bring, although adding this seems like a pretty big change.
Microsoft has said that the winner of this generation of the console battles will be determined by who does online better. Xbox' achievements, already available online games, and general ease of use are a good start but probably not sufficient. It will probably take a killer online app to prove whether Microsoft's contention is on the mark or not.
