Without You should have been higher. An incredible version of an amazing song. And I dig Badfinger's version a lot as well.

I thought I heard a little bit of country in there -- an update of the Ballad of Ira Hayes, basically.

Solo McCartney/Wings = not bad at all. Why does that stuff get such a bad rap?

Because 90% of it is flat-out corny, that's why.

EXACTLY. Most of the good stuff was released on a 45, either here in the U.S. or in the U.K. There's like 10 pieces of crapola for every good song McCartney released.

MY LOVE. LET 'EM IN. EBONY & IVORY (well-meaning crapola, but crapola nonetheless). SILLY LOVE SONGS...

Just listen to these albums: "WILD LIFE." "RED ROSE SPEEDWAY." "BACK TO THE EGG." "McCARTNEY II." "PIPES OF PEACE." "PRESS TO PLAY." "GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROAD STREET." If it wasn't for a few CD-era bonus tracks, NONE of these discs would have anything worth hearing.

Some of the 'good' albums haven't aged well. "Tug of War," "Flowers In The Dirt," "Flaming Pie"...these were supposed to be comeback albums, but I don't hear it. A few good tracks here and there, but these aren't solid albums. "Band on the Run" has a few duds but it's still his best album of originals. I actually prefer "Run Devil Run," 'cause even in his late 50's and early 60's, Paul still has the chops to rock out.

I'll spin "The Mess" (flip of "My Love") or "Hi Hi Hi" or "Give Ireland Back To The Irish" before I'll give turntable time to "Goodnight Tonight" or "Take It Away" or "With A Little Luck."

Although I do kinda like "Helen Wheels" - that is one SICK rockabilly guitar riff running through that song...

I can't listen to "Past, Present and Future" without thinking of Derek and Clive's "The Horn".

Ok, so some random thoughts on the list so far.

The Doris Duke track is killer. I had never heard this before but I was listening to this on the way to school this morning and I was just spellbound. I sat at a green light at the top of my street for a moment I was so distracted.

I also wasn't familiar with Jackie Wilson Said. I have neglected most of Van Morrison's ouvre for a long time, probably because I've been tortured with Brown Eyed Girl non-stop for the past 22 years, but the horn chart on this just had me grinning from ear to ear. Yeah.

The vocal on Travelin' Band is astonishing. I've heard this on the radio like I guess everyone has but there's a difference when you have a good set of headphones on and really hearing the song well for the first time. Shotgun did the same for me. What a just....crazyily exciting track. I want to see Taylor Hicks dance to this shit.

Little Willy is another really good sounding track. My musical background is classical in nature so I really don't know shit about recording but they had something going with this one. Another one of those songs that you're not really familiar with...but you still know, I guess through osmosis or whatever. After the first couple of seconds I knew exactly what was coming in the chorus and I was like "oh yeah.....that song."

Ok.

Low for the Stones there, didn't expect it in the top 100. Whatever you think of "Brown Sugar" those are three fairly strong songs.

After the God Only Knows/Wouldn't It Be Nice debacle, it would be great to see singles being voted for on the basis of a single song rather than their mini-ep qualities.

Oddly, "Brown Sugar" was the only song I was voting on. I had no idea it was in that EP triad.

I believe they were commissioned to write those tunes very quickly. "Mrs. Robinson" was something Simon had laying around for some time, and had no title for it until they were approached to provide some music.

Fucking awesome instrumental break outshines the rest of the song...probably the last good thing George Martin ever had a hand in.

yeah, word. I mean, I love the rest of the song too, but that break is fuckin' intense
birdistheword
Remember when McCartney was doing Visa commercials in the early 90's? That was the first time I ever heard that instrumental break. They didn't play the rest of the song (and they actually capped the commercial with "My Brave Face," which seemed woefully lame in comparison), but it really did sound awesome at the time. It was another 3 or 4 years before I found it what song it was, and I was surprised it was a James Bond theme.

If you didn't know already the opening lines "After all the jacks are in their boxes and the clowns have all gone to bed" are inspired by the BBC's test card (test card F) that was shown at the end of a day's transmission which first appeared in 1967.
