Hmm. Sorry if I screwed that up, B, but I'm pretty sure I'm Still in Love with You came out in 72. That vinyl appears to be a greatest hits repackaging.

Oh man, the live feel at the beginning of that record is so good. Al sighing and crooning, a little loose guitar picking, CLICK. CLICK. CLICK. CLICK. WAH WAH WAH.

And the horns. Oh shit the horns. I need more hip hop songs with horns like that.

My mom loved this song. Clear memories of riding around wherever with an Oldie's station on and Dancing in the Moonlight playing and my mom turning it up everytime. She was very much an NPR/classical kind of person but I still pay attention when she finds the token pop song she really likes. So what was Al Green doing releasing a single five years after the album came out?

I get the feeling like this practice was not all that uncommon in the 70s--I was reading through Bowie's singles discography the other day and I was truly astounded by the number of singles he released well after their accompanying albums had peaked. Could be because Al had a new hits compilation to promote, or his label needed something to tide audiences over while he came up with new material, or any number of other reasons.

I somehow get the impression that it wasn't Al's idea...by 1977 his popularity was fading, and releasing a five-year-old album cut was probably a desperation move that his label came up with. (It was right around this time that Al put out The Belle Album and started gradually switching over to gospel.)

Well, it was a single in Canada, but I don't know if we count that for singles lists. I actually think I prefer the dexys version. Rowland just has an immensely emotive voice that works great with that song. He sounds like he's in an absolute panic at parts of the cover. Probably the second best track on 'Soul Rebels.'
