I haven't listened to the new Snow Patrol yet, but you guys are making me want to real bad. "Final Straw" was great. Sure, they wrote more mainstream accessible songs, but it was a really strong album. If the dissing is because they're continuing in this direction, shame on you, hipster. If the dissing is because it's truly bad, then cheers.

I liked Final Straw a lot more than I thought I would. This is just horribly bad. Lyrically, especially. I can't remember for sure, but one of the lyrics is something like "Sometimes I want to be the traffic accident/but I'm just the traffic jam" or something totally idiotic like that. My wife and I both burst out laughing and I forwarded to the next song. No more listening required. Hate to be a "hipster" about it, but they used to be better. Even his voice sounds different to me, he doesn't have that lazy-like affect when he sings, it's more like singing and much less distinguishable in comparison to other singers. It must be his radio voice.

Their last album was way overproduced. The song would have sounded better on their own instead of tying to reincarnate the Folk Implosion.

I think the overproduction was the guiding factor of the reach to the mainstream. The songs were good, though. I hate to hear that the laziness is gone from the vocals. It's what made them unique and distinguishable. Think I'll throw the new one on. I've heard two sides, must see for myself.

Like I said before, I actually liked the first half of the last one. But you are really OTM with that, this just doesn't feel like it will appeal to anyone.

I posted this in the Metal Thread, but it's here too for non-Metal Thread frequenting types...
here's the new Om album, Conference of the Birds:
h33p://s56.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3SQJUJMPS4D2J3VO6S51ZRQ371
On first listen, it's not as startlingly great as the first one, which had the advantage of non-precedence, I guess. The first track is pretty subdued, while the second sounds like it could have been the 4th track on Variations on a Theme.
Om is a duo made up of the two guys from the trio lineup of Sleep who are not Matt Pike of High on Fire, btw.

I gotta agree about the quality of "You Only Live Once"--it really kicked juicebox in the face. An' really, I think the strokes have a good showing on all their opening songs. As for "FIOE" as a whole, it has really grown on me--the fact that my favorite song on it keeps changing is a good sign. I agree it doesn't exactly push the envelope, but I think it's more solid than it appears at first. I just wonder why they didn't put "Moderns Girls and Old Fashion Men" on there since it would be one of the best songs.
A'course, I haven't bothered to listen to the new Snow Patrol . . . maybe no one is saying good things about it because the good things are so obvious when you listen to it. Right.

True, as a pure pop artist, Dan Bejar falls short. But as a fucking wrecking ball of lyrics and emotion, and creative construction he pretty much destroys other artists.
