I liked Down in Albion quite a lot, despite the overwhelmingly negative response from nearly everywhere else. This DPT album sounds merely ok, but I've only heard it twice. There are some good tracks here though.
DrJimmy
yeah, okay, i was fooled by the guitar work on DPT, which made me think it was better than Albion. it's not, i agree with above statements by brent.

don't know if i'll ever listen to these boring spin-offs again. i'd rather watch joanie loves chachi.

This album is absolutely fantastic. The production (comparing to the demos) makes a big difference.

Yeah I thought it was pretty good too. Shame they are getting any press, that's what happens when you release your own records though (and that's why it's leaked so quickly.)

If you are half intriged and want some kind of quirk to make you download it, here's the tracklist.

3. Fifteen Part 1
4. Nine

thank you for the DPT leak.

but it's not as good as the Babyshambles album. It's pretty much the same record, but with no personality, soul, or allure. If you thought the reggae moments on Babyshambles were bad (they're not), you need to hear Carl trying it. Dave Sardy goes far to ruin the record too with his in-the-red crackle that he's been slapping on every record since Barkmarket. The entire thing is just an unending wall of trebly guitar.

Carl seems more desperate to recreate the Libertines, but does not have the charisma or lyrics to pull it off.

This is awfully depressing because I thought the Babyshambles record was a complete waste of time save for maybe two songs.
Mitchell
The first 5 tracks on DPT are OK/good the rest are not very good at all.

Re; The ˇForward, Russia! It's nice to have some sharp anglular guitar music that has a sense of anger to the vocal delivery to it.

DPT has definitely grown on me after several listens, melodies and hooks reveal themselves with repeated plays. Not the Libs, but I wasn't expecting that. It's pretty good.

Carl seems more desperate to recreate the Libertines, but does not have the charisma or lyrics to pull it off.

Anyway, I didn't really think Carl was a particularly good frontman on his own. Not horrible, just not that exciting. And he seemed pretty uncomfortable up there to boot.

The lyrics seem kind of forced, like they were taken from some pre-conceived notion of what rock bands are supposed to sing about. It was pretty much what I expected. Pleasant enough, but I doubt I'll be listening to this two months from now.

I think you're onto it, Oddity . . . Carl just sort of has defeat wrapped around in his voice and his every expression. It's a shame because some of my favorites from "Up the Bracket" were some of his songs, but he hasn't really been able to match them since. This DPT album is decent, yeah, but he does sort of left back in the disconnected boxcar of Libertines-lite conventional rock . . . at least with the mess that is a lot of those Babyshambles tracks, there is a little more space for possibility.

And yeah, I don't feel like the DPT are going to stick with me. Yeah, I didn't like "Albion" on the first time through, but it's begun to grow on me, but I just don't see "Waterloo" as having that same potential. I'd still go out to see The Things (or should it be 'The Dirties') play if they make it this far.

Brief side-rant: was I the only one who thought that the album version of "Killamangiro" was massively disappointing? It sounded to me like the band doing an amateur cover of themselves, pete practically falling over, tripping over his own lyrics. Shame, too, because I really felt like the song equaled the best of Pete's work in the Libertines.

Um yeah, too many re-records of songs that were just fine as they were. But then again, weren't the original Babyshambles sessions that were acoustic and recorded in hotel rooms better than most of Down In Albion? Maybe it's because we've heard them the most, but there's just this sheer brilliance and perfection of those tracks, no matter how poorly recorded, that the finished product doesn't touch. I like DIA, but there's a bit of fat on it.

No, you are not the only one. I thought the album version of "Killamangiro" pretty much sucked compared to the single. Also, I noticed they cut that whole part that starts at about two minutes in (on the single), the part that (to me) loosely steals the melody from the White Stripes' "We're Going to Be Friends" and put basically nothing in its place. That was dumb. Plus the album version just sounds terrible.

Plus, regarding the messiness of Down In Albion...
Who can name any members of Babyshambles besides Pete?
My guess is that without Carl around, he doesn't have anyone with equal clout in the band to tell him that something sounds like crap. Think about it, if you're a hired gun that can be easily replaced, are you going to tell the band leader that the song goes on for longer than it needs to, or that a particular song sucks? Probably not. Nobody's going to tell the guy his stuff needs editing, even thought some of it really does.

Oh, and did anyone see the Glorious Noise review? I thought it was pretty amusing:

"B.U.R.M.A" is the best track on the DPT, and while the first half is probably better overall, the record's really grown on me after a few listens.

And the iForward, Russia! is the album Bloc Party believe they made.

hinsey, i like it quite a bit so far, but will reserve a more final judgement until a cd quality rip surfaces.

def blows Riot Act to pieces, and probably Binaural too. wouldn't put it ahead of anything else yet at this point, but there's not really a single song i dislike, which can't be said for the last 2 that's for sure. def some songs that are way better than others. Unemployable is still actually one of my fave songs. then prolly Life Wasted, Severed Hand, Comatose, Army Reserve, Come Back, Gone, etc.

i'm guessing they'll play World Wide Suicide first on SNL this Sat, then maybe Life Wasted (supposedly the 2nd single) or Gone (supposedly possible 3rd single)

Mucho grassy ass for the Jesu, st. park.

no prob. it really is the most melodic, accessible batch of songs that broadrick's ever recorded. i like it.

Supporting Arctic Monkeys so I'm sure that we'll hear a lot more about them, I've seen on the tykes on TV, they seem alright.

i think they sound quite a bit like the AM's, the video is pretty similar to that prostitute video as well.

Actually I gave this a little thought the other day, and I guess you're right. Also, "Thirteen" is one of the better songs I've heard this year. Pay attention to the lyrics, very impressive.

BTW, I don't know if its the quality of the rip, or the source, or just the production of the thing, but this album sounds a bit peculiar. I think the treble is very high or something. Is it just me, or the louder, more dense parts of Thirteen are filled with very high-pitched oddly sounding quirks ? Maybe I'm just going crazy huh.gif

Wow, that's a bit TOO much like AM's for my taste, talk about a knockoff.

I didn't know about it either. Anyway, I absolutely loved the debut, so this should be swell.

Damning with faint praise? wink.gif

Monkeys would be the first to acknowledge that Milburn are better instrumentally.

I don;t think they sound that similar. they certainly aint a rip off.

it is in a similar style and they both live in Sheffield. The Milburn thing is about a true story of someone who kidnapped a girl in Sheffield

it may luck equally grim but hey that's my home city! biggrin.gif
