What's the deal with the new Yo La Tengo? Has a complete version of the album leaked yet? I don't want to tease myself with the sampler but it seems to be taking for-fucking-ever.

I am holding out for this and The Hold Steady as well.

New YLT has leaked, i have it. i will up it reasonably soon for you two gents.

Have we even determined that the version that I posted awhile ago is a sampler? Something about the segues between songs. Either way, I dont notice because i have the iTunes crossfade playback effect in place so that the songs just blend together anyways. And boy, you guys sure are missing out.

But good for you. I'm sure your abstinence will lead to greener pastures down the road.

Ahhh. I can see your point, although i think it also depends on the album. With an album like the Liars' Drums Not Dead, for example, i think it almost works in its favour, since it helps to achieve the cohesiveness that even the smallest of pause may not allow. And in the case of the new YLT (sampler), it allows me to forego the awkward segues between songs.

New YLT doesn't seem like a sampler in length, but I do find it odd that a few of the songs fade out during vocals....

It sounds to me like the first 80% of each song. A brilliant way of 'leaking' one's own album, if that was the intention.

Anyone remember when Guster "leaked" Keep It Together, replacing the vocals with them singing the word "meow" over and over? It was kind of brilliant.

This is why I still use Winamp at home (on the music server). The advanced crossfading plugin works exactly the way you'd think it should - plus you can configure it the way you like. Definitely not for listening to albums... I would never use it for anything other than random/shuffle listening.

Itunes doesnt leave a small pause if a cd is ripped as a cd. I downloaded 4 different copies of drums not dead until it was all cohesive on Itunes. (yes I tried to buy it, couldnt find it anywhere)

That is quite brililant. i don't know if the YLT is a sampler or not, i'll give it a very close look. However, if it isn't the proper album, it's nothing so creative or obvious as Guster's approach.

Youth Group - Casino Twilight Dogs

Youth Group are at the forefront of an exciting new era in Australian alternative music. They have the pop of The Posies, the articulate desire of The Red House Painters and Death Cab for Cutie, the rock of The Pixies, and the angst of Bright Eyes. Singer/guitarist/songwriter Toby Martin formed the group with drummer Danny Allen in Sydney, Australia and despite several line-up changes since, these two remain at the band's core. After quickly gaining a strong live following the band signed to local independent label Ivy League Records (the same people who manage The Vines and Jet) and released their debut album in May 2001.

Mainstream success has been a while coming for this Sydney band. It was only last year that many heard of the band via their #1 cover of "Forever Young" which featured on an episode of the O.C. Off the back of that hit comes their third album. Wayne Connolly (best known for his work with You Am I) has produced it in studios in both Sydney and Los Angeles. Singer Toby Martin channels some classic influences like The Byrds and Bob Dylan in many of these new songs.

Track List:

02 ON A STRING
03 LET IT GO
04 START TODAY TOMORROW
05 DEAD ZOO

yeah?

i'm having trouble getting into it a ton...

it's solid, but i really miss the rockers, it's al fairly midtempo or slower stuff, it needs a 10am Automatic or All Hands imo.

my faves of theirs are the first one, Big Come Up, then Rubber Factory. this one makes me feel sorta like thickfreakness, which while decent, is/was my least favorite.

i need to give it some more time i suppose, i got distracted w/ the new Petty & MMJ live album.

You're right -- it is relatively slow compared to their past stuff. I guess it's their melodic sense and the ability to write a hook that has really left me so pleased. The SOUND of the album is really impressive too -- it's almost warm, which is kind of odd, in a good way. Their earlier stuff, while really rocking and fun, always kind of blurred to me. I'd find myself loving the albums on first listen, but then geting bored with 'em. This one feels different. Still, I've only listened to it once through and then a few of the tracks on random, so I'm definitely due for some more intimate time. wub.gif

NCL is much less accessible, but arguably much better. i hear what you're saying about feeling drained afterwards... It's quite an album, but not one of those ones that just flies by. At first i was glad when GoL didn't have that effect, but now i think it would have been better with it...
