What's this i hear about a new Akron/Family?

QUOTE( @ Jul 24 2006)

Crazy Brooklynites (and in this intrepid news reporter’s opinion, one of the best bands making music right now) Akron/Family have set September 25 as the release date for their new “album”, Meek Warrior. Why the brackets? Well according to reports, it’s a little longer than an EP, but not quite as long as a normal album, so we’re not quite sure how to categorize it. Maybe SLEP for Slightly Longer Extended Play. Maybe not…

Anyhow, we could sit here and give you all the details concerning the recording process, what to expect, etc. etc. Instead, we’re going to give you an account from Akron/Family’s own Seth Olinsky:

“These songs were written about a year ago by individual band members and then hashed out as a band together on the road in hotels and in the van the few weeks prior to the studio time in Chicago, while we were all freezing in the winter hinterlands of Canada, wheezing with bronchitis…The recording in Chicago was nuts. We played in Iowa City Monday night. Then drove all that night, slept 2 hours on the corner of 23rd and Michigan in Chicago outside the studio in the van. Then started setting up to record at 10:00 am and recorded until 8:00 pm. Then we headed straight to Urbana Illinois to play that same night. Then drove back to Chicago that same night after the show, started recording that next morning at 10:00 am, recorded all day again, and then left again at 8:00 pm to play that same night in Milwaukee. It was extremely crazy, and I can't remember if we have ever been more disoriented and tired before…We recorded at Shape Shoppe in Chicago and it was engineered by Griffin Rodriguez…Griffin also plays upright bass on track 4, no Space in this realm…The big emphasis on doing this recording was the chance to record two days in Chicago with our favorite free jazz master drummer Hamid Drake. He has played on hundreds of records with jazz luminaries Peter Brotzmann, Don Cherry, Pharaoh Sanders, William Parker, Mats Gustafsson, Ken Vandermark - the list goes on … We did an additional day of recording with the Do Make Say Think/ Broken Social Scene guys in Toronto, two days with Jason La Farge at Seizure’s Palace in Brooklyn, and countless mind droning moments in my (Seth's) apartment. Mixed and mastered with Doug Henderson. Production was Akron/Family and Michael Gira. We recorded ourselves in Chicago and then a day in Toronto, and then we went back to NY and did two more studio days and mixing with Michael.”

Kudos if you got through that paragraph. Your reward? Tour dates:

09-23 New York, NY – Tonic (2 shows)
10-04 Buffalo, NY – Nietzsche’s
10-05 Toronto, ON – Lee’s Palace
10-06 Ottawa , ON – First Baptist Church
10-07 Montreal, QC – Le National

Don’t worry, this is just a preliminary list. There are many more dates set to be announced soon.

Finally, just to show you how forward-thinking the band is, even though Meek Warrior isn’t due out for another couple of months, Akron/Family is already planning to work on another album. The band is shooting to start recording this coming January, and hopes to release the album by next May.

and also, have you heard the album "Franny And The Portal To The Fractal Universe Of Positive Vibrations" I don't remember where I found it but I think it's an old self release CDR album, I can send it to you if you like.

as much as i love the akron/family this whole notion of releasing tons of albums (lp and ep last year, ep this year and a new lp on the way)really fast has me worried.

granted the growth from the debut to the angels of light split was amazing, i would like them not to spread themselves so thin.
Gbro
I have tickets for the Akron/Family show in Ottawa and I must say I'm looking forward to seeing them in a church. Saw them last time at a club notorious for its poor sightlines and while I could see all right at that, I couldn't see a thing this week at Sunset Rubdown so I'm all for new venues. Bell Orchestre is playing at the same church in Sept.

hell yeah on this one, this is my first time in this thread and I get a record I actually want! thanks Jordan

I pulled this from the thread called house/techno/d&b, if ya'll have any old mixes you should upload them there.

This Juan Atkins mix from 98 (mixed live) is one of the best primer's for chi/det techno and house from 80's to 00's basically (98 is close) It includes a lot of the hits, but my favorite part is the techno midsection. Some of these tracks may sound sorta quaint compared to Ricardo Villalobos, but as a maker of music, these producers did a lot with what they had... we'll jsut say that. Enjoy the mix!!!

Beck video for new song, "Think I'm In Love." i kind of dig the song, though the bridge is jarring and feels shoehorned in.

His new album is out sometime this month, but after hearing the single, and being a bit meh for his last album, hopes are not that high. musicforthemorningafter owns though.

Yeah, the last one was more of the same, but sounded less. Except for a couple songs, it was rather lacklustre. I like "Burrito" though. Just the way he said the word. How many songs do you hear now with a burrito as a focus?

I thought songs like that was what contributed to its downfall, but I like it more as time has passed. I saw the tracklist for his new album, Nightcrawler, and I see that Undercover is on there! That is probably the best Pete Yorn song of all time, and it was wasted on the Spider Man soundtrack I think. That was back in 2002, I wonder if it's been rerecorded. Anyways, I'll up the EP once my Destroyer album is done on headphones, it's on a different computer.

William Elliott Whitmore - Song of the Blackbird

frickin' LOVE this guy...

His voice definitely has some of the ragged qualities of Tom Waits, but in my opinion he’s got a ton of raw emotion & melody along with the gravelly throat as well.

Seeing him sing live is a bit of a shock at first, hearing this haggard & worn (in the best way possible) voice coming from white kid in his late 20’s. Musically, his songs range from Appalachian Folk to sometimes tracks that wouldn’t be out of place on a classic Bob Seger record.

he's opening for Lucero this fall along w/ Rocky Votolato, don't miss that tour
