Space City kinda reminds me of Beck's Sea Change some too, just realized my 2nd time through. like i said, not a bad song, just a poor tracklist placing.

If anything, "Space City" signals a decided shift in mood during the last 15 minutes...it gets really sombre after the first eight tracks.
This thing is already a Best of the Year contender. Fantastic.

yep, agreed, def one of, if not my fave, so far after only 3 listens (i know i know, early, but whatever

After a night of working out and doing some paper writing, I have come to the conclussions...
~~The new Grandaddy is overall pretty good. Some of the instrumental spots are really really killed ("Skateboarding..." and "What Happened?" in particular). Also, the transitions between a few of the tracks was pretty solid. I definitely like what I hear. Is it better than "Sopthware"? I don't think so (at least as of now), but oveall, I feel "Fambly Cat" is really a solid disc. I can see myself getting into this alot more come summertime. It really has that summery feel to it at times.
~~The first half of the new Drive By Truckers is also really solid. I was typing a paper and got through the first half and really really dug what I'd heard. I really am looking forward to hearing the rest tonight.

If you mess with the tracklisting on the new South its amazing, look back a few pages and find my tracklisting for this album and then the album will sound WAY better. I hated it at first, now I think its one of my favs this year.

i'm gonna declare this right now, after just finishing my first full listen to Garden Ruin
the final track, All Systems Red, may very well be Calexico's best track ever, holy fuck.... i need a cigarette!
reminds me of The Frames, they have a lot of those tracks that start out super slow then build to this insane ending, that and they've toured w/ each other before, so prolly not imagining things.

shimmy, that kid that was supposed to get his promo hasn't posted since then, so not sure.
as for Calexico... hard to say... they're one band that is awfully hard to label
at their basic roots they are rock, but definitely a Mexicana flavor (obvs). some of it is even mariachi. this new one is much less of that though, more rock/country/folk than usual.
Jenny Penny
Feb 10 2006, 03:51 PM
Yeah, I'd say the new Calexico is the most straight-forward rock record they've done. Which is fine; cos it's still great.
