Seriously, does he pick it up vocally at all on this record? That wheezy, slightly tubercular grumble of recent vintage has worn a little thin for me.

Well he's not getting any younger, so that voice will remain for the forseeable future. That said, I think there's a vey noticeable progression in his ability to recognize his limits and that's a wonderful thing for me.

It is good that he can recognize his limitations, leave it to Bob Dylan to do something great even in his old age. That being said, the new album is making love to me. Or i'm making love to it. Either way, Dylan and i are making sweet sweet love. cool.gif

Yes, thank you very very much for the Dylan.

And as for Akron/Family, yeah, it sounds different. i would not quite say that it's on the level as their first record, which was just fucking amazing. It still sounds good, but perhaps its a bit disappointing considering the level of their first work. i guess it would be a very dumb idea to expect a band like that to make two records that sound sort of similar though. i love the fact that they're experimenting, and i do enjoy Meek Warrior a LOT. It was a surprise when i first heard it, but shit, that's what bands like Akron/Family do.

I've enjoyed Meek Warrior on the first couple listens. This is the first Akron/Family stuff I've ever heard. How is the first album different? I'm intrigued...

You have yet to hear it? Wow, you are deprived. It's kind of hard to explain, but i will say that songs like "Blessing Force" are not on it at all. Take songs like "No Space in this Realm" and lengthen them a bit, then put them in a blender for awhile. i dunno, this is a horrible job at description. It's a damn good album, that self-titled one. i'll up it for you when i get the chance.

I don't think I like that Dylan album much. Admittedly, I've not given it much of a listen, yet, but so far, it's really not so good - sounds like retread blues melodies with mediocre vocals - and the lyrics I've heard haven't really done much for me. Unless the music kicks in soon, though, I'll likely not find out much more about the lyrics.

EDIT: I'm uploading it to you send it for mb right now.

I think you're way off the mark El. Dismissing it as retread blues and mediocre vocals. There is soul and depth in his music that you obviouslyare missing. His voice even breaks at times, not like Cash's on his last work, but more in a tingling sort of way. And the subtle playing of the musicians is just top notch.
If your collection of modern folk and alt. country artists were in your presence (like Griffin in you avatar) the ywould all be giving you the raspberries.

probably, but hey, just cuz Patty makes great music doesn't mean her taste is perfect. Anyway, I haven't given up on it yet, but the fact that many attempts to enjoy Love and Theft always failed, and I've come to like Time Out of Mind a little, but don't really get the over the top praise of it gives me less hope. And for the record, I have a hard time dealing with full doses of Cash's latter day records as well - there are moments, but I find the voice gets grating fairly quickly - Dylan's has less charms than Cash's, too.

And just as a reference, I LOVE Dylan's voice in the early days, and circa Blood on the Tracks - find it totally underrated - even on Infidels, I think it's excellent - but the voice is just shot now - lost all it's charms.

but the voice is just shot now - lost all it's charms.

i like the older voice better. the age in his voice feels better-suited to the traditional styles, more evocative of the past, has more gravitas and all that shit.

you're wrong though.

oh right, shit, for a second i thought i was right.

But i do have a request, which is infrequent at most for me. Anything by The Books except for Lost and Safe would be GREATLY appreciated.

I've gotten a lot of good musics from this thread since I stumbled upon this board looking for some Intonation discussion, so as an offering of gratitude I have Pigeon John - And The Summertime Pool Party while it is still actually summer:

Some press release mumbo jumbo:

“Break out of the (beat) box and into the parallel universe of Pigeon John. Instros from RJD2, Chris James, DJ Rhettmatic, Great Jason and "The Black Jack Tripper" himself meet prose about Taco Bell, Filipino B-girls, drinking beer from a wine glass, listening to JJ Fad, copping Jordache jeans at the mall and a jalopy full of self-effacing humor. We dare you not to jump up on your office chair and yodel along as Pigeon John channels Fishbone on future highlight reel soundtrack, "Higher?!" Do Patron shots and colorful drinks get you shoeless on the dance floor? Throw your purse in the middle of the circle and dip it low to Rhettmatic's infectious "Freaks! Freaks!" It's the new Friday night anthem (even if it's only Tuesday). Can't seem to find a place to set down your backpack? Well tighten up them straps and get bigger headphones, "One For The…" teams up Brother Ali, Pigeon and a whole lot of boom-bip to knock your head to.”

Good question.
That's a great Zevon song. Actually Sentimental Hygiene is a very underrated Zevon album.

To answer my own question, yes, it's the Zevon song, though it's a retread from the Zevon tribute that came out a couple years back.

If anyone wants to see something great, pick up the DVD of the making of "The Wind."
