Milburn : Well, Well, Well. 24.09.2006

QUOTE
Milburn are an indie band from Sheffield, England .

Milburn started out at 14 playing small gigs in front of friends, practising at Greeny's (drummer Joe Green's) house. In 2002 they sold out the The Boardwalk twice and played at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, The Garage in London and Leadmill in Sheffield, while supporting Tony Wright's band Laika Dog and Cosmic Rough Riders.

The band's profile was raised immensely by several gigs with friends and contemporaries Arctic Monkeys, including a support slot with the Arctics at the time their 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' single reached number one in the UK charts. NME also took interest, including them under the banner of New Yorkshire.

After releasing two limited singles, 'Lipstick Lickin' and 'Showroom', on their own label Free Construction, Milburn signed to Mercury Records in 2006. Their debut single for the label, 'Send In the Boys', reached #22 in the UK charts in April 2006, and at the time of writing the band are working on their debut album, "Well Well Well", released on 24 September 2006 on Mercury Records. Also in April 2006, they were interviewed by Simon Amstell from T4's Popworld and revealed that the origin of their name was a bet with a friend whose surname was Milburn.

In TheFishtank is an ever ongoing project of Konkurrent, independent musicdistributor in the Netherlands. In this collection Konkurrent invitesmusicians to whom they feel strongly related to record. They are giventwo days studio time and freedom to do whatever they like musically.
The Fishtank offers a space for expression and experimentation, results may vary but are always surprising.---konkurrent.com
Upon first spinning this Fishtanksession of Isis and Aereogramme attracts attention with it’s wonderfulsound. Where both bands are known for their love of metal andpost-hardcore next to experiment and a spheric approach, they not onlyshow these skills here, but on top they reach an impressively highlevel of purity, roominess and emotion.
Putting two bands togetherwith such different home-bases as Los Angeles and Glasgow in a smalltown near Amsterdam was a challenge we couldn’t resist. In December2004 the idea grew concrete that long-time Konkurrent-friendsAereogramme would share the studio with Isis to record a Fishtank andin the following months all directions pointed to July 2005 for action.Isis just finished their european tour, Aereogramme hit the road andthe bands played a warming-up show at the Amsterdam Paradiso the nightbefore they entered the studio.
When Konkurrent invited Isis andAereogramme to do a Fishtank-session, we expected a heavy and loudsession not yet heard before in the series. Was it the extremely hotweather? The overwhelming 70s atmosphere in the studio? The shittyhotel the night before?
It’s the analog warmth that makes the songstender, organic, imminent and fragile. It’s the unexpected that makesthis a very successful edition to us.---konkurrent.com

If you liked either of the first two albums at all, most definitely.

"Wide Awake" is absolutely stellar--might be the best song they've ever written. "Moth", "Until We Fall", "Somedays" and the title track sound pretty strong too. "Original Fire" (and its buzzkill solo) is not indicative of the album as a whole.

Grow up.

Indeed the indie reeks in here. Seriously there is good music to be found above ground...be my guest...stay underground but don't go making judgements about other people's tastes...atleast without backing it up with solid debate. And while I'm ranting...sure would be nice to see some of you in other threads contributing to the discussions....carry on.

EDIT: Maybe I was a bit groggy this morning at 5 or whatever....don't mean to come down too hard on y'all. Just not cool to go mocking others tastes for no other reason than just that. You know....lots of chicks dig BNL. Good way to get in good with them....maybe even get to see them barenaked if you play your cards right. And big ups to most of ya'.

Yeah, I don't feel like getting into a BNL discussion here, I get that they are seen a lot differently south of the border than they are up here in Canada (not suprising since they were basically ignored in the States until "One Week"). I would also question how many people here have actually listened to the Barenaked Ladies albums from beginning to end.

It's a little odd to see everyone slobbering all over XTC in another thread here, when the bands most often referenced when people talk about BNL are XTC and The Beatles.

So, yeah, I like the Barenaked Ladies. I don't neccesarily like some of their stupid singles, but on the whole, they're extremely talented lyricisits and their albums are usually pretty solid from start to finish.

And yeah, I get that indie music rules this site and I prefer indie music for the most part these days as well but I don't write off everything that is mainstream, just like I don't write something off because it's outside the rock genre that I prefer. But there is a lot of good mainstream music, just as there is a lot of shitty indie music and vice versa obviously.

So, here, listen to "War on Drugs" from their 2003 album, it's not that bad.

Barenaked Ladies - War on Drugs

Maybe I'll start a BNL appreciation thread... that should go well.

I just find the band to be funny considering songs like "one week" and such and I find it funny that people still listen to them
suddenly this becomes me being so "indie" or whatever...I don't dislike them because they're not indie. I don't think they make good music, and I find it funny.

Man, I'm glad I visited the board before work this morning. Thanks for this and to whoever up-ed the rapture.

This isn't studio but it's one of the early versions of "Only Skin" on the piano, and trimmed down to about 4 minutes.

indie indie indie indie indie indie

the "i" word
