Sorry about the other "spoilers" for people who for some reason hadn't seen those classics yet, that may have been a dickhead move. But as for the Lost "spoiler", it just wasn't a secret to anyone but you, sorry. Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin

Review Courtesy Of cokemachineglow.com

Never underestimating the power of pop music is one of those first lessons we’re all supposed to learn as we make our way through The White Album, Pet Sounds, Radio City, Murmur, all the way up through Oh, Inverted World. These are the big names, but there are thousands more albums — millions of pop songs -- that click for whatever reason and just make things however much better. Go back and listen to Beulah’s “Gravity’s Bringing us Down,” the dB’s “Big Brown Eyes,” the Go! Team’s “Ladyflash” or Blur’s “Star Shaped.” These are songs that work on so many levels -- be it through undeniable hooks, pure youthful energy and excitement, or love-struck honesty.

I have absolutely no idea how to make one of these sorts of songs work, which is why I write about them rather than actively participating (that and the lack of any natural musical talent). Still, spend six or seven years honing an ear and you start to be able to gauge when someone’s doing it right. Which is why I’m pretty excited about this little band out of Missouri, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin (henceforth and forever more to be abbreviated as SSLYBY). They aren’t doing anything revolutionary, but they’re crafting great little pop songs with plenty of hooks, character, and ambition.

SSLYBY’s debut record, Broom, makes me wish (even more than usual) that Elephant 6 was still a presence. Broom fits comfortably next to the likes of Handsome Western States and even Fun Trick Noisemaker: not a truly great record or an entirely cohesive OTC-type affair, but nonetheless a terrifically enthusiastic lo-fi debut and a sort of throwback to a better era of pop.

The band establishes what they’re up to with an impressive one-two opening. “Pangea” plays off a breezy, sharp electric guitar lead and bubbly bass line, building through a simple pop structure (complete with killer breakdown at about 1:46) to a cry of, “Pangea / we used to be together / why’d we have to drift apart?” The follow-up, “I am Warm & Powerful,” plays it more ambitious, abandoning the original time signature at the 1:14 mark, morphing from a gloomy lament to straight up sugar-candy pop with the sort of perfect self-effacing lyrics to play against the music just right.

Singer/songwriters Philip Dickey and John Cardwell have managed to perfect their romantic croons and both have a solid understanding of the importance of a strong background vocal. The understated interplay of vocal parts on “Oregon Girl” saves an otherwise underwritten song, while the complex interchange throughout “Yr Broom” throws it over the top. While the rest of the band, particularly lead guitarist Will Knauer, often summon up some interesting arrangements, it’s Dickey and Cardwell that really manage to make the songs work.

And overwhelming, they do work. While “What’ll We Do” sounds dangerously like a The Coast is Never Clear b-side, the band manages to pull off the piano-guitar interplay quite well. The gorgeous “House Fire,” quite possibly the album’s finest moment, seems them moping along to a simple enough snare line that refuses to explode in the way that “I am Warm & Powerful” did. The lyrics of, “we did what we could / to save this car from crashing / your pretty face soaked in blood / you know I still find you dashing / airbag suffocates you / need a little space / rain on the windshield as I watch you limp away,” seems like the perfect companion to Chad VanGaalen’s amazing car-crash love song “1000 Pound Eyelids.”

The closing trio finishes the album off quite well. Knauer’s staccato guitar line serves as a backbone for the swirling “Anna Lee,” while “Anne Elephant” takes on the production chops of an M. Ward track, letting the handclaps and heavy guitar line play through. “Gwyneth” sees the band dabbling with a light piano line that comes through despite the hazy production and closes the album on a pleasantly downcast note.

There is no reinvention of wheels on Broom, but that’s really not the point, anyways. SSLYBY make good pop songs. May not seem like a whole lot, but, judging by how few really great pop tunes we’ve seen this year, a lot harder than it seems. Having ten in one bundle shouldn’t be taken lightly.

The Slip: Eisenhower

The Slip : Eisenhower
7.0
Album Reviews
Written by Megan Waters
Friday, 03 November 2006
The Slip, a Boston trio known for their enthralling live act, turn in their jazz hats for radio-rock caps on their first album for their new label, Bar/None Records. As a result, fortune has certainly been shining on the band lately, winning "Best Live Act" at the Boston Music Awards and Guitar Hero featuring their upcoming track, "Even Rats". They're also touring the nation, starting in the West with The Lovely Feathers, and eventually finishing in the East opening for My Morning Jacket. Jim James has even said they were "taking what we know of music and trying to twist it to a different place." Eisenhower isn't a sell-out album, it's a bust-out album, and these eccentric anthems will surely turn The Slip around the corner on their alt-jazz past to better things.

With a smooth rock panache, The Slip feel like a normal, radio-friendly rock band on the surface, but any deeper, it's obvious that there's much more going on. Their production is the key that turns the lock. Eisenhower was pieced together by the band themselves along with Matthew Ellard and Drew Malamud, who between them, have worked with Wilco, Metric, and the late Elliot Smith. The way their anthem "Even Rats" starts out with sliding, blipping guitars and pattering, metallic drums before diving into the slower, stadium-core riffs is an example of how both accessible and atypical the album is.

There's an array of drum experimentation on Eisenhower, such as on "Airplane/Primitive", where the beat seems to careen over itself on a loop. Andrew Barr's rhythms are the foundation of the rest of The Slip's "primal energy" - typically a frenetic trip-rock pace that makes any guitar effects sound more intelligent. "The Soft Machine" is built on in-between half-beats that turn the song into a higher energy, more-compelling lap around the alternative pool. Drums aren't the only instrument being developed from their old sound, though.

Uncommon guitar arrangements make up about a hundred of The Slip's multi-faceted sound. "Life In Disguise" is a jumbled acoustic track with cardboard box drums, but the melody steals the show like something the Goo Goo Dolls would do if they were actually cool. The synthesizer in "Mothwing Bite" plays off the alt-country pace smoothly and the vocals comfort before the distorted solo kicks in. There are plenty of eccentric moments like this throughout Eisenhower.

While The Slip's jazzy sound was often ignored before, Eisenhower should change that, and with touring, spotlight the trio's abilities to transform modern rock into something beyond. It's obviously already gotten them a lot of attention, which is well-founded, and if Jim James thinks it rocks, c'mon, so should you.

I will cop to pimping this disc.. just ask norty! but if you liked the brother kite please give it a listen. It's one of the the best discs of this genre I've heard in a long time.. reminds me of the best of swervedriver in the way it holds together as a complete song cycle.. I adore it. Think One Part, Slowdive, One Part Cranes, One Part Interpol, subtract Allison's voice and voila.

Fixed Link For Dulcesky: Lands

Jack Rabid Of The Bigtakeover.com

2004’s Media Luna/Half-Moon EP was no bum steer. The Lands LP it preceded, and whose quality it portended, is finally here, and the Salt Lake City quartet’s dreamy, gauzy, faraway rock stands up just as beautifully to the greater demands of a full-length work.

(As described on the tonevendor site.)

Lands proves that DulceSky's two prior EPs were a necessary stepping stone to what is hands down the band's most accomplished work to date. Like the best dream pop, the new album is teeming with energy while simultaneously projecting a serene, almost floating vibe. Beginning with a literal pulse and culminating in an epic, cathartic release, Lands plays like a symphony-a unified work with a definite trajectory and plenty of standout moments. The sound is familiar to the initiated: shoegaze guitars, memorable melodies, and powerful drums are at the forefront. But beyond the obvious, colors emerge like gleaming fireworks slowly fluttering to the ground. Songs like "Half Moon" and "I Dreamt of You" are painted with icy synth patches and delicate backing vocals. Subtle beat programming often segues one song into the next, contributing to the album's unified feel. Ever present are Oliver's ethereal vocals, Daniel's strong bass lines, and the deft production touch of Matt Winegar.

This things is all over the place, and I like the sudden change of directions although this is pretty mainstream pop for the slip... it was hated in some places.. glad you dig it.

Has anyone heard anything about a release date for Kenna's "Face"?

One of the early contenders for Best of 2007 (i know, im way ahead of the pack) just got a whole lot cooler. Peep the new album art for Deerhoof's Friend Opportunity, 2 of twelve collectible covers for the record.

I'm not sure what's up with the jello bestiality cover, but the other one is pretty cool. Kinda has a Katamari Damacy vibe to it.

I think friend op is already boring (see, this is what I hate about the somb, its only 2006!) especially after the wonderful runners four. galaxia or whatever is pretty cool and the last song that drags is good but thats about it for now. maybe it will grow.

actually its pretty good. haha Im so dumb.

Daylights For The Birds: Trouble Everywhere

Daylight's For The Birds

More synth-infused indie-pop to get you feeling bright and summery? You got it. This here is Daylight's For The Birds. They're awesome. They remind me of that special wonderful spot where '80s and '90s 'alternative' music intersected and gave us bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, and Ride. But their sound is a step removed from that of the classic shoegaze sound. At times the music that Daylight's For The Birds makes will remind you very much of Mazzy Star or Cocteau Twins or any of the many other excellent early '90s female fronted bands, but that doesn't tell the story either. From what I can tell, they've just got that something though. The something that, when you hear unmixed demos on MySpace, makes you want to hear more. The best paraphrase of what their music sounds like might actually exist on the band's own MySpace page: "(sounds like)...the last thing you wanna hear before drifting off to sleep...and the first thing upon waking". To see them live? Yes. And to own a full album by them? Yes, yes.

They were posted about in April on Gorilla vs. Bear but I didn't really take note then. Perhaps that happened for others too given the lack of comments on that post. Then again, who knows which way the comments blow?

Two of their songs are below and there are two more on their MySpace page. The two songs here feature Amanda Garrett on vocals. They're really fantastic unmastered, rough mixes and Amanda's voice just soars. Do have a listen.
