through track 4 this new Stills record is quite boring sadly. compare this with their last record and you have a band that really just can't find their sound imo. shouldn't be too surprised considering they used to be in a Ska band not long ago

i'm feeling sorta how i felt with Howl the first few listens... except i at least enjoyed that one a bit

You'd probably enjoy the jazz stuff it's influenced by though (Chet Baker, for example). It's got nothing to do with jazz as in Miles, Coltrane, Mingus etc. It's fun jazz, not challenging jazz.
BTW, i'm not a huge jazz fan either. I like some stuff but i'm not one of those people whose top 20 lists always have at least 4-5 jazz albums thrown in.

You guys had me worried about the new Stills. It's definitely more commercial-sounding, but it's not a complete trainwreck. It might be a little early for them to be breaking out the horns and keyboards, but I found Logic kind of same-y after a while, so maybe it's a good thing. And really, doesn't the world need a new Travis?

I dunno, it just wasn't doing anything for me. All middle of the road sounding pap. I vaguely remember the last song being the most interesting, but I'd have to download it again to find out for sure. Also, originally, this was supposed to be called Exploding Machines, but they settled for the more bland, accessible This New Day. Come on now.

yeah the first and last songs were the best. Did anyone listen to "flaming red hair" from on of the out of nothing singles? very techno/rock but it really worked well for them. I wish this new album was more like that song, but I do think the new album is as good as the first. too many songs on the first, I like a good 10 song album when almoist every song is top.

The new Stills is pretty lousy, alright...it's the sound of a band that has completely lost its direction and don't know which way to go. If you're going to go all mainstream on us, please, please give us some hooks, don't just twiddle around for an hour. We all have better stuff to listen to.
Actually, "Baby Blues" (the one with Emily Haines) is good.

While cruising around the blogosphere a little while ago, i came across one of my favorite new bands. They are called Slowlands, and early word on the band is comparing them to the likes of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Wolf Parade. Im not quite hearing either of those bands in Slowlands, but they do remind me alot of Band of Horses (although i actually prefer Slowlands). I have salvaged 5 tracks from their debut LP, but i couldnt find the tracklisting online, so im not sure how much of the album i actually have. Ill post the tracks i have here, but if anyone has the full record or knows the tracklisting, id appreciate to have either/or
