Jim & Greg should do a show devoted to death metal, or is NPR too much of a pussy outlet to okay it?

And maybe 95% of listeners would turn off. Good idea.

While you're at it, do a show about polka. And what the hell, you know who really deserves a tribute show? Donny Osmond.

No. Don't.

God, Moo and Oink... You are dumb, my friend.

God, I'd love to hear it, but, yeah, it would never happen and isn't a great idea on NPR. They did do a metal show back on WXRT where they played Dark Tranquillity and Opeth, but I doubt they could even get away with that anymore!

Spoken like a man who's clearly never heard an Opeth, Carcass, Death, In Flames or Dark Tranquillity album. Sorry to sound again like "the DJDee of metal," but this sort of uniformed mentality continues to bug me.

Death metal ain't just Cannibal Corpse anymore, dude. But, yeah, I agree, its probably not a good show idea. But its a better one than having Clap Your Fucking Hands Say Fucking Yeah We're Overrated Indie Hypes on.

What a weird thing to request, considering you said this a few hours later:

I was quoting psychoticsumo

There's been so much fragmentation of and cross polination between different styles of Metal that SO could easily do a show about some of the darker genres without using anything offensive.

And how could NPR consider itself inclusive while excluding Metal stylistically? They're too Liberal (in a mnice way) to allow themselves to exclude it unless SO tries to use patently offensive songs.

Agreed.

They might be able to do a show on the Tolkin metal/opera metal stuff but that probably be as far into the depths of metal they'll go unless they do a tribute to great 80's metal that's not hair/glam.

I thought you would have known Stylus and Pitchfork are giving death metal decent scores now...it's COOL TO LIKE METAL!

Seriously though, I think a death metal show per se would be a bad idea in that its too constrictive a label. Metal always gets a raw deal because people just think Motley Crue/Def Leppard hair metal, or Korn nu-metal, or in some other way corner it into a label. So why not just focus on "dark music" or "heavy music" and play everything from Opeth to ISIS to Boris to Katatonia...etc.?

the whole scene that surrounds all those Scandanavians and murderers and church-burners is fascinating enough to make it worth a listen or two at least.

You're confusing Death Metal with Black Metal. Two different sub-genres and scenes. [/metalgeek]

Most NPR listeners have kids, which means they had sex at one point, which means they don't listen to death metal.

j/k my death metal friends. It has its place. A place where bands go when they can't write good songs.

j/k my death metal friends, they can write good songs. They can write good songs within the context of a dismal song quality genre.

I'd go for a show about bands with the musicality of death metal who didn't have this guy as a lead singer:

Or, someone could suggest them to me on a message board and that'd work better.
Robin
We haven't done a death metal show, but here's a sort of intro to metal feature:
http://www.soundopinions.org/shownotes/200.../shownotes.html

We'll keep the death metal suggestion on the list. Thanks

Waiting for a death metal band with enough of a sense of humor to call themselves Cookie Monster. Or Cvkie Monstre, if they really must.

A show about Black Metal would be interesting....considering how unadventurous Jim & Greg's tastes are
a Black Metal show with their recommendations on good 'metal' would let us know what to avoid.

The prog rock show was a snore....all obvious. What about Henry Cow, Magama, Univers Zero or Heldon?!

JIM & GREG QUIT TALKING ABOUT BORING POP/PAP MUSIC ALL THE TIME!! mad.gif
