this will be an ongoing thread, updated as necessary. It in no way reflects a year-end list tally, although certainly some that appear here will wind up on said list.
So, albums that are presently keeping Lady Bird up at night include:

ok, so this isn't an album, but damn if the guillemots' "trains to brazil" isn't the best song i've heard this year by a considerable margin. mitchell, was this released in 2005?
"Made Up Lovesong 43" ain't too shabby either.

glad to see you give the thumbs up to The Kooks--"Eddie's Gun" was one of my favorites of '05 and their new one (whichever Mitch posted) was pretty great too. I'll have to look around for that one.

I went to guillemotsmusic's Myspace page, I dig the Trains to Brazil song very much. Nice beat. I didn't think that Made Up Lovesong 43 was close to as good. It wasn't bad, but Brazil is a better tune.

also, Missing Songs is better than most bands' debut albums. Love the Lennon cover.
If I could forget that the worthless early demos are on there, it'd be an 8.6.

It' great to hear about the Maximo Park. They were on my ipod all last year. They are so danceable and poppy. I thought I would have gotten tired of the album eventually, but never did. I need to go Amoeba and pick up missing songs. Thanks for the recommendation.

Late December 2005, after the deadline for singles had passed. I'm voting for it this year (It will no doubt be re-issused.)

can't believe it's taken me so long to hear this record.
it's the sound of built to spill and the shins mating. the second half takes it down a couple of notches, but it's still pretty fantastic.

no no, not even close
there will not be tons of hype around this, trust me. if there is it'll be a slow burn. people will prolly write 'em off as MMJ/Shins ripoffs mostly.
if Pfork even rates it high, it's because of the Carissa's Weird connection (though they did rate The Funeral high on the singles thing, but who knows). but yeah, MMJ, meets The Shins, and as Sickpup stated, some BTS as well.
it's just a really great indie pop record, nothing too original, but fine by me. i'm just glad more and more people are hearing it (and liking it as much as i do).

Im saying a 8.7 from the fork, and this is one album from 06 so far that I can keep coming back to. First Song, Our Swords, Funeral, and The Great Salt Lake are wonderful little tunes.
sounds alot like early built to spill with later built to spill production and MMJ vocaly. I like the lyrics alot as well.
havent heard destroyer but everyone seems to like that more yet no mention of them being a competition come year end in this thread.

Destroyer is def good, but i prefer great/memorable melodies over quirky/originality any day.
i'm sure people will argue about how great the melodies are on Rubies, fine, but as much as i like the record, there's nothing that i have the urge to sing along to, or that gets stuck in my head like The Funeral or Great Salt Lake really. that and the whole "lalalala" thing on Rubies tends to get annoying for me after a bit.

well I cant judge because I havent had a chance to hear any destroyer let alone the new album but I am a sucker for good hooks as well, as long as they are fully flurished, which Band of Horses do very well but not spectacularly. still very good in my eyes though
