OK Thought I'd bring this back with some bits and pieces requested elsewhere etc etc.

First up The Guillemots (http://www.guillemots.com/) finished 5th in the BBC's sound of 2006

QUOTE(The BBC)
A quartet trying to rediscover a time when good tunes and chart success could go hand-in-hand with individuality and invention. They can be quirky and catchy in one song and dreamy and haunting in the next.

Good to see this

QUOTE(pitchfork)
Fri: 03-10-06

Guillemots: "Trains to Brazil"
genre: indie rock

OK listen: sneakers on snowy blacktop, playground chatter, opening wail like some huge-as-a-bear hug from Win Butler. This song's an impossibly smiley anthem, like roller-skating downhill for four straight minutes and never losing steam. Horns are sweet but they never nauseate, uplifting us to times when "nothing really mattered at all." But "Trains to Brazil" isn't the stuff of mindless cheer: it's not looking back in anger, per se, but still more bitter-saccharine than mawkish. If anything it's the polar opposite of ignorance-is-bliss advocacy? "Can't you live and be thankful you're here?" the Guillemots ask, like they're not so sure themselves-- and are all the lovelier for it. [Rachel Khong]

God both those covers suck. Can Embrace get any worse? I loved their first two albums, liked the third, couldn't stand the last one, couldn't even bring myself to buy it. Haven't heard this new one yet, but I can't imagine feeling any differently. I think I like Snow Patrol, but having to say that I think that means maybe I don't like them as much as I thought. I have their last two albums, I'll probably try this out when it leaks.

I'm gonna go buy that on Monday, have a feeling that it will make top 40 as well. I was dead pleased when it beat off BYOP on Lamaq's Rebel Playlist (and it got 70%) on 6Music last week.

i don't really understand the editors comparisons i'm reading about everywhere. sure, there are nods to the oh-so-fashionable fashionable dance-punk (what british rock band doesn't do that these days?), but i hear some fascinating, unlikely digressions as well. Some serious brit-pop reverence -- specifically suede. it's an odd combination to be sure... but I like the direction they're heading, as least at first blush.
Mitchell
At least Andy Gill isn't producing it. Supporting Editors and We Are Scientists probably help lump them in with that lot.

I can hear the Suede in it, another thing that I've noticed is the amount of bands that have a touch of Echo & The Bunnymen in them, nothing obvious just a little bit of a Bunnymen feel behind what's going on at surface level. (aside from Doves or Coldplay)

I've just read that Donnie Darko is their favourite film and soundtrack so they obviously are fans at least. Also I think the fact the lead single is obviously going to swooned over will do them wonders.

the last minute is perhaps my top musical minute of 2006.

they got the a-side and b-side ass backwards. the a-side is ok, but it won't exactly help those unfortunate comparisons to editors/interpol.

Guillemots is pretty solid after one listen. I like the last track quite a bit. Thanks for posting this!
Mitchell
Get them while they are still good.
Bobzilla
Thanks to Mitchell for posting the Guillemots full length. They're the real deal (and probably more deserving of their own thread).

I recognized most of the new songs from their okay live appearance at Schubas earlier this year (where they seemed a bit tired and indifferent). As with the live show, "Sao Paolo" pulls off the feat of being an 11 minute song that doesn't feel like half that long; it's so multi-faceted and involving. But you can say that about most of the Guillemots' songs, especially another relative epic "Redwings". None of the new songs are as obvious or immediate as "Trains to Brazil" (revisited here along with "Made Up Love Song #43). "Annie Let's Not Wait" and the title track come close though. "Blue Would Still Be Blue" works better live with Fyfe solo standing on a chair with his little plinky, twinkly keyboard...it's a bit precious on the album. "We're Here" underwhelmed me when I first heard it as a single a few months ago. In the context of the album, it's absolutely sublime. "If the World Ends" is the only track that isn't doing much for me at the moment. A bit too MOR.

These guys (and gal) aren't for everybody...I can hear Jim Derogatis now, "Where's the rock?"...lots of strings, complex keyboard and percussion arrangements, emotive vocals...but this has a lot of rewards for those who appreciate ambitious pop music.

As for the other recent postings: Young Knives: ok-ish. A few songs sound too much like other UK new rock bands with few distinguishing characteristics. Plan B is just not my thing. Thanks again Mitchell.
Alright Still
Do you know what the next Nerina Pallot single is going to be? I love Fires.

Thanks, Bobzilla. I really enjoyed the Guillemots on first listen. There are a couple of tracks towards the end I wasn't too enamoured with but overall I like their dramatic sprawl. Hopefully it stands up to repeated listens, but it seems there's enough going on here that's worth coming back to.
