http://theraconteurs.com/sounds pretty sweet. supposedly the album is 10 songs, 35 minutes long, and Jack sings a majority of the leads, but i hear Brendan plenty on these tracks still.
have a feeling i'll dig this more than the last 2 or 3 White Stripes records (last one for sure), but i suppose i've been gay for Brendan long before the Stripes.

Thanks, been looking forward to this for awhile now. The first track's nice, though it sounds pretty much like a track off of
Satan. The second track sounds awful.

awful? man i much prefer the second track (it's a b-side to the single)
and i don't think the first one sounds even REMOTELY like anything off Satan either, nothing on Satan is even remotely as rockin' really. the first one sounds very much like a Brendan Benson composition to me.

i'm guessing you're not disagreeing to my last comment about it sounding like a Brendan song, cuz if so, you've not heard a single BB record
i just really dig the dual harmonies on the 2nd more, both tracks are good, just prefer the 2nd a bit.

Heard plenty of BB, mainly
Lapalco stuff but a few tracks here and there as well. The guy did produce my favourite recording of 2005, after all. His own stuff has left me mostly unimpressed.

I was really looking forward to this, and these two songs sound pretty good.
These songs sound alot like Brendan Benson if he had more balls.
I guess that's what Jack White's there for, huh?
solace
Jan 30 2006, 01:29 PM
Brendan comes from the McCartney school of rock, can't blame him for not "having balls" when he writes as great and catchy melodies as he does.
the opening Trifecta from One Mississippi definitely ranks up there in terms of favorite pop music moments in the last 10-15 years myself.

I'm a fan of Benson, but his live show blew me away. The guy's voice was even better than on record.
That opening set he played with the White Stripes in August made me a Benson believer, too.

I like the 2nd song as well, that stuttering ascending line with octave pedal is killer. It's like a dirty synth but I'm sure it's jack messing with his slide and POG/whammy pedal. Guitar sounds like some lost Tom Morello track.

I have to say I'm pretty excited for this release. Benson's always had songs that I've loved (what I'm looking for, for one), but his albums overall haven't wowed me. This seems like a perfect match for a great straight up rock album. Comparing it to Nevermind makes no sense other than to draw attention, which seems to be working.

i like these songs.
"Steady, As She Goes" is a good, solid single. Nirvana-ish riff, maybe that's why that idiot made the Nevermind comment.
"Store Bought Bones" starts off disappointingly, but takes an unexpected turn and almost becomes a truly great song, but somehow falls short.
Great sound, I love it.

Store Bought Bones = Deep Purple
Steady Ash She Goes sounds like it could have been on any of Brendan's solo records for the most part. also, it is actually Brendan on lead vocals on Steady, Jack comes in on the 2nd chorus and 3rd verse. 2nd one is both of them together.
this album is gonna be great, not mindblowing, but great all the same.
that's lame about the single going for so much, it's getting a NA release in March
