Most of these tracks come from two separate dates on the infamous Tom Petty Tour, so one of the best parts about this disc are the few snotty comments they make about Tom in between songs. In the middle of the disc are the five tracks which were released by Sire as a promo CD in 1989.

Nobukazu Takemura - Finale[/b]

how is this one? any previous records to compare it to?

This is actually one of his earlier works. It's really brilliant. This AMG review does it more justice than I could. Check it:
QUOTE
The second and final volume of music recorded for the Naori Takizawa fashion show is far more abstract and haunting than the first, with a different set of elements introduced into and equally seamless mix. On the earlier album, Milano (also known as "the first set"), Nobukazu Takemura relied heavily on harmonic variations on what he decided were "classically-oriented" themes. He employed computer-driven programs that simulated the sounds of winds, strings, reeds, and even percussion, all of them very warm and organic sounding. Where themes and variations developed on one another into intricate lyric patterns and rhythmic pulses, the sounds here -- while resembling in places those found on the earlier disc (particularly the sound of the harp) -- are also abstracted with industrial sounds, digital noises, and structured musical entropy, where all thematic elements that are created are gradually and systematically dismantled in order to arrive at their most base materials: whether that be a note or only a un-pitched sound. What holds this sprawling electronic soundscape together is Takemura's insistence on bringing the listener with him. There are a few note patterns that seem to repeat every once in a blue moon, no matter how disenfranchised the material becomes. Using spare, long tones and shifting edges with the corners rounded in the mixing booth, Takemura is able to make some colorful music that is as reliant on timing, nuance, and texture as it is on the gear he composes and performs it on. Finale is a haunting, stark work, that, while shrouded in stillness, never quite stands still, is almost lush in places, full of mood, subtlety, and an impeccable maverick method. What a way to end a fashion show.

I personally think that this along with Milano and Child & Magic are his best albums, but nobody ever seems to mention them. Probably because they were only released in Japan I guess. I've got all 3 of these on CD. I'd be happy to rip any/all of them and put them up if there's any interest.

I dedicate this song that I am listening to right now to all my new SOMBie friends:

I'm always gonna have to know I'm important in your life.

If you try and come see me and I'm not there,
Tell me you tried so I know you care.
I want to know that I'm important
In your life
Know that I'm important in your life.

I know a girl, she's important to me.
When I feel separate from her, I am in misery.
Dear, let me know that I'm important
In your life
That's what I tell her: Let me know that I'm important in your life...

Oh, that's probably the Great Phone Calls album, which I believe was made before the "Neil Hamburger" character even existed. The album consists of Gregg Turkington making a bunch of prank phone calls, a good half of them to pizza places. I haven't actually heard it, though. Great Moments... is the latest Neil album (it's from 2005) and it's the only one I have. It's not a strictly stand-up comedy album like his others, but there is some of that throughout the album. It's mostly a tribute to and history of DiPresa's Pizza House, which Neil used to perform stand-up at before it finally closed down in 2004. I voted for it in the 2005 albums poll! It's just that good!

No, this was a Neil Hamburger album. Mostly phone calls, though. A lot of them were him calling comedy clubs and saying "Hey, who's playing tonight? and then telling the dude on the phone to "Hold everything, cuz Neeeeeeiiiiiil Hammmburger's in town."

This is also the one with the "I'm in your band" routine, where he calls some dude who has an add in the paper for a bassplayer, and basically agitates this guy into wanting to get into a fist fight with him.

Serioulsy one of the funniest things I've ever listened to, and it never got old. My old room mate was a big fan, and had a bunch of discs.

edit: You're right, it is on Great Phone Calls, but some of the bits are Neil Hamurger calls.

I don't think any of their albums just click automatically with anyone. But Gentlemen is one of my 3 or 4 favorite albums ever and I still listen to it as often as anything I own.

Congregation is a weird little thing though. It doesn't match the heights of Gentlemen, Black Love or 1965. But still remains one of the most underrated albums of the 90s.
