Good Saturday music, good Sunday music.

I know he has his fans round here but I'm still sort of surprised there aren't a lot more. Fela Kuti = a 20th Century great.

I'm know it's the shrink wrap, but that woman's head looks like it's encased in ice. Wouldn't it have been awesome if Ray Conniff actually had an album cover with a woman's head encased in ice? It would be the Beatles' butcher cover of the easy listening world.

Sin Fang Bous - Clangour
It's the Seabear guy in a solo guise, playing pretty, layered and shimmering folk and psych-inflected pop songs. At times there's some busier en massed vocal harmonies/overdubbing a la Panda Bear that's quite sweet. It's a perfect Sunday morning listen, and another good new thing to listen to in 2009.

The New Music 1967 budget release featuring music by Stockhausen, Penderecki, others. Found this one last week. I usually grab anything by Stockhausen, which sometimes leads to other interesting artists. The Penderecki piece is really good.

Dert is one of the freshest producers in LA and he works his magic yet again with a free beat tape release featuring 34 exclusive tracks showcasing samples from the Pink Floyd discography titled Dert Floyd - Westside of the Moon. Featuring classic Pink Floyd vocal hooks, guitar samples, and drum breaks, Westside of the Moon will have you bobbing your head and leave you hungry for more.

Wish I could find more about this album.

I always thought that cover was ugly as hell. Looks like a high school portrait.

Parka Brothers UK - Parkas Full of Posies
Wow! I'm currently blown away by this. Complex, rhythmic experimental rock with generous helpings of psychedelia. Plus, you gotta love being able to spin this on vinyl. I may even be tempted to copy it onto a vintage Maxell XLII-90!

(Hate to draw comparisons, but aside from what was mentioned already... Ween.)

Still not digging Different Class.I like the first five songs alright,But the rest of it does absolutely nothing for me.

Matt Elliott, Drinking Songs and Failing Songs. These are damn good records. More people need to be listening to them. This is the most drunken, drug-addled, and haunted folk music you're likely to hear.

And apparently he released one last year without me noticing. Howling Songs.

Various Artists - I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore 1927-1948

Really beautiful, sad folk music from early 20th century American immigrants, most in native languages.

I was listening to some of this guy's stuff the other day. I'm not usually folk music guy, but it sounded interesting.

yeah i was checking out a little of that Matt Elliott earlier too and i liked what i heard.

what's a good starting point?

Ogawa

I highly recommend Drinking Songs. That's where I started. Give me a sec and I'll upload it.

He also does electronic drum and bass stuff as Third Eye Foundation. I haven't checked it out but supposedly it's pretty good. Some of his solo songs reflect a bit of that.
