Fun fact: the guitarist from that band's guitar is featured on this album cover:

BAGIA still doesn't gel for me. A couple of good songs,But after a while it seems quite formulaic.

I've got a soft spot for her voice...sure, the record reeks of Lilith Fairie dust but dammit, she's got a really strong, sleepy voice.

Certainly no need for you to apologize for digging Gillian Welch. Not sure I even get the Lilith reference other than the fact that Gil's female and she seems a bit of a hippy type.

I've been wanting to check out her catalog. She made a surprise appearance onstage when I saw Jon Brion in LA a few weeks ago. I liked her voice quite a bit.
Any suggestions for where to start?

The new vinyl issue (also on CD, but haven't heard the CD) of the Monterey concert.. the new mix sounds fantastic, much less distant than the 1986 CD version. Although knowing Experience Hendrix, the CD version of this probably sounds like crap. Still, the LP = greatness.

That looks great, and is long overdue.

That LP blew me away. I've never enjoyed this performance so much, and at this point I'll agree with your claim -- Woodstock sounds overlong, meandering and maybe even kinda uninspired compared to this. Hendrix is on fire, but even more than that, Mitch Mitchell sounds inhuman. It sounds like grindcore or something.. I never noticed the drums so much until this version. Fantastic, highly recommended.

NP:

Love the Black Peter here. It's almost unbearably slow. Real origins of slowcore right here folks. wink.gif Katie Mae is pretty excellent too, acoustic Pigpen is an unfortunately rare treat.

So glad I went with my gut and just bought this as soon as I saw it in the store. My brain was all like "Do you really like this album that much?" My melting turntable says yes, yes I do.

I should buy that.

Wow. Album is nowhere near as terrible as I remember it being. It's not anything compared to actual Radiohead, but for early-90s sub-grunge sub-britpop british guitar rock, it's really enjoyable. The second disc on the new collector's/deluxe edition is loaded with goodies too.

It's like 2002 all over again for me (because I never listened to them before that, and that was the release of their last record). Weird feeling!

just saw your gillian welch question, mb. I suggest you get either Time (The Revelator) or Revival. Both are great.

Lots of great boots of gillian, too. Maybe I'll burn you a copy of one or both if you'd like.

Thanks for the suggestions, ElC.
I'll look for those. May take you up on your offer if I can't find them.

I am now playing lots and lots of Boysetsfire. I wish I actually went to that gig at the Cockpit while they still existed, instead of being all 'I've grown out of that scene'. I proper missed out. I also wish I had got their last two albums when they came out, rather than a month or so ago.

Better late than never.

I think this will always be my favorite release by them. Perfectly beautiful, just the right length, but still too short. Few pieces move me in their entirety as much as this EP does.

Does anyone know what the soundbyte used in Canyon Inn/the last track is from? Or is it something they recorded for the album? I feel like it's something I should know but don't/that perhaps it's rattling around in my head somewhere.
