speaking of dub, I've been listening to this:
IPB Image
This is fantastic. World, Dub, and Electronic inspired music by some people who knew what they were doing. Takes heavy cues from electronic era Miles Davis in a good way as well.

So who's playing bass & who's running the knobs? I'd expect Laswell'd be behind the boards, but would he give up the chance to do a Bass Duet with such an interesting person?

Interesting that you brought that up. I thought laswell was sitting it out on bass as well, but I just looked at the liners and both are credited with bass. But of course Laswell mutates it all at the end with his mixing skills, I assume.

More people need to check out that Pissed Jeans album. Dirgey scum-rock in the vein of Scratch Acid, Killdozer, Flipper etc. Song titles include "Ashamed Of My Cum" and "Ugly Twin (I've Got)".

Guster - Ganging Up on the Sun
I know that Guster isn't hip in the least, but this album is pretty fantastic. At the end of the day, I'm always going to gravitate to guitar-based pop with hooks, lyrical insight and strong vocals, and this album has it all and then some. The chorus of "Satellite", the verses of "One Man Wrecking Machine", the countrified instrumental break of "The Captain", the crunchy riffage in "The New Underground" and "The Beginning of the End", the spare poignancy of "Empire State", the whole of the epic "Ruby Falls"--all great.
IPB Image
Corinne Bailey Rae
I like it. A nice coffee house vibe that's both folky and soulful, he says, sipping his non-fat mocha.
IPB Image
David Ford - I Sincerely Apologize For All of the Trouble I've Caused
Finally got this after seeing him open for Gomez and being suitably impressed. Musically varied for a singer-songwriter album, although it's definitely a politically and personally-charged and in-your-face singer-songwriter album. And yes that Parental Advisory label is every bit as large as shown. Is anybody buying this really going to be offended by some f-bombs? Sony are a bunch of fucking wimps.

I could only find Jerusalem when I was looking for it a few years back.
Of course I found it rereleased as Dopesmoker later. How different is it anyway?
From what I understand Dopesmoker is a little longer and only a single track.
Pavement Ist Rad
Dopesmoker sounds a million times better and more powerful, too. Plus, there's a bonus track called "Sonic Titan" and the guy who introduces it has a funny "yeah, dude" tone of voice.

This is excellent, though I still prefer his work with Easyworld a bit more. There are a couple of really great recent bootlegs out there. By the way, rewind the first track on the album and see if the bonus track is there. It's on the UK version that I have, but I don't know if it made it to the US release.

I've just popped on the James Dean Bradfield record... sounds quite good.

Moon Safari - Air

Smooth & mellow, this album's out of step with the rest of late-'90s Electronica. It's something out of time, sounding like it's from '60s French Jazz, '70s Soundtrack music, & '80s New wave all at the same time, and since when can Francophones come up with Bass Lines like that? It all flows, it's all danceable, and it's all good.

I just gave that song another listen. That style is not too typical for Dennison - would never have guessed that it was him. What sustain!

Since I'm probably the only one that would seriously talk about this album with you, what do you think? I'm pretty disappointed, not that I had huge expectations. But I liked the direction Chris was going with "Vindicated", that over the top bombastic pop style and I feel like this falls pretty short of that. With the time he took working on this album I was hoping for a little more development, but I guess this is Dashboard frickin' Confessional we are talking about here.
