What a fine album (and a fine title--three of my favorite things). Sadly, my cassette version was stolen when someone broke into my car last fall.

the slits - the peel sessions

This cd is a 10 track collection of the essential stuff of their three bbc sessions. These girls really rock.

QUOTE
Upgrading an earlier disc that featured the band's first two John Peel sessions only, this ten-track compilation rounds up all of the Slits' BBC recordings, with the most crucial of their three sessions, the previously unreleased October 1981 airing, added in to remind listeners that the group's early reputation as a slipshod blur of punk-oid energy was only the first of the faces they turned to the world. In terms of classic punk energy, sessions dating from September 1977 and May 1978 are unbeatable, the sound of the unsigned, untutored, and -- in the eyes of many people -- unlistenable Slits crashing defiantly through distinctly formative renditions of songs that would not reach fruition for another year, and the completion of their debut album. "Vindictive" alone was not realigned for that disc; of the other six songs, all underwent sufficient reinvention to create starry-eyed converts of even the most disdainful of early witnesses. Famously, at the band's first BBC session, an anguished technician crept out to retune their instruments while the quartet was busy elsewhere. It doesn't affect their performance.

By the time the Slits returned to the BBC in 1981, their original vision had become totally skewed -- along with much of their early optimism. The Return of the Giant Slits, their long-awaited second album, had arrived to absolute incomprehension, and the band's future was already in doubt. The music they were playing, however, was the future. No longer the adrenalined D.I.Y. disaster that had clattered so alluringly across the early sessions, nor the dubbed-out hybrid of Cut, the Slits were now embracing a tribal thud that, while wholly anticipating the later fashion for world music, was so far out on a limb that even Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush had yet to clamber out to join them.

Lengthy throbs through "In the Beginning There Was Rhythm," the so-haunting mantra "Earthbeat," and (the aptly titled) "Difficult Fun" are readily superior to their vinyl counterparts, tasting much the same as the band's period live performances, but imbibed, too, with a questing tenderness that reveals just what a fabulous vocalist Ari Up was; her post-Slits recordings with the New Age Steppers caught many people by surprise, but the Peel rendition of "Earthbeat," in particular, proves there was no need for that.

Sometime during the mid-'90s, John Peel rated the first two Slits broadcasts among his all-time favorite sessions -- one reason why many first-time purchasers chose to overlook the repackaged Peel Sessions altogether. In terms of illustrating all that the Slits were truly capable of, however, the third session is even better than either.

Just got the remastered version, and it sounds fantastic. This is, in actuality, my least favorite Slowdive record - not that I don't like it, I just really get off on the others more. And I must say the 2 cd version is worth every penny. The second disc is loaded with bonus tracks + a 3-song Peel session from '91:

Slowdown (1990 Single Version)
Avalyn 1
Avalyn 2
Morningrise (1991 Single Version)
She Calls
Losing Today
Golden Hair (B-Side)
Shine
Albatross
Catch The Breeze (Peel Session 4-21-91)
Song 1 (Peel Session 4-21-91)
Golden Hair (Peel Session 4-21-91)

Speaking of their other albums, I also picked up the remastered / expanded:

IPB Image

I'll be listening to that one on my way home from work, I'm sure. In the meanwhile, it also comes with a second disc of killer bonus tracks:

1. Some Velvet Morning (Outside Your Room)
2. So Tired
3. Moussaka Chaos
4. In Mind
5. Good Day Sunshine
6. Missing You
7. Coutry Rain [EP in Mind Remixes]
8. In Mind [Bandulu Mix]
9. In Mind [Reload Mix]

'Scuse me - gonna go bliss out for a bit... wub.gif

Now this is how bands should compile non-album tracks. 2 discs, 32 songs, b-sides, unreleased tracks, alternate versions of songs, it's all here. I'm not always in the mood to hear TSOOL, but this is really really good. CD-Wow USA has this for like $12.95, I couldn't pass it up for an import with free shipping. God knows it probably won't be released here in the States anytime soon, if at all.

i think bazan lost the plot with the last 2 records, this one brings it back a little. he recorded all of it himself like his first 2 records, a lot warmer and just better songs really. the first 6 songs songs are "big" versions while the last 6 songs are lo-fi versions of the same songs. i like it.

Former Talk Talk vocalist gets even more sparse than Laughing Stock and Spirit Of Eden with this little solo record. Quite lovely, probably not for everyone. But it you're a fan of those last 2 Talk Talk albums, then you need this in your collection.

After hearing "God Knows" a month or so ago, I thought a had a pretty good idea of what this El Perro Del Mar album would sound like. Oddly enough, the songs on the album don't really sound as much like "God Knows" as I figured they would. They're a lot sadder, quieter, more minor-key-ish. I like them, though. Can somebody please Y-S-I the "God Knows" track? Thanks.

Now, this Futureheads album just rules, see? Fantastic band, damnit. "Burnt" is such a cool song, as is pretty much every other song on here. Less "gayness" doesn't mean less "goodness"! Awesome.

And the Frightened Rabbit album is fucking atrocious. Awful, awful shit. Sorry.

Listening to this again, and it's amazingly good. I'd sort of had my fill of Nick Cave before this and hadn't bothered with the previous couple of albums, but this is an awesome return to form. That rarest of beasts - a double album with not one weak track. It's just one killer after another.

IPB Image

After reading lots of good comments about this around these parts I finally caught up with it. Really top notch, they need to make more records like this. Close your eyes and you wouldn't believe this is a white guy from England.

I have no idea, I just made that up awhile back to describe early 1980's American rock that was influenced by Brit post-punk and set the stage for the later "indie" bands of the decade. Lame, but whatever.

I keep going back and forth on which album I like better. I didn't d/l the leak of this one, so it was fresh to me other than the single, and I really thought that it was better than the first for a few days. Listened to the first one this morning on the train, and I was determined it was better again. Then I put the new album on again while walking from the el to my office, and I really can't deny how great it is.

Rather Ripped = Sonic Youth playing indie pop songs! Don't you love it when the Lee Renaldo song's vocal melody consist of more than two notes? I sure do.

So This Is Goodbye = Less skeletal than the debut. More soulful, though.

Yellow House = Cool cover, cool music, etc. Thanks for the recommendation, Simakos! And no thanks for that shitty Frightened Rabbit album. I still can't get over its shittiness. Glad you enjoy it so I don't have to.

The Warning = Better than the Postal Service.

Citrus = Crap. It sounds like Metric or some shit. I hate music like this. The first album that Bleach was pimpin' in '04 had a much cooler cover.

The Rose Has Teeth In The Mouth of a Beast = Incredible. Maja Ratkje is scary.

Wizardzz is a cool thing. Gibson can drum like a motherfucker. 'Cept the mother is a drum set and he's hitting it with sticks rather than fucking it. The "drums/synth duo" thing can occasionally grow monotonous, though. In fact, if there's one thing this could really use, it's some damn vocals. Still. Interesting. Yes.

The Witch album is very rad. Awesome slow, doom-metal shit, but with a big "early 70s vibe" to it. Cool guitar tones. Heavy. J. Mascis, too.

And the Pipettes album rules. I didn't think I would like it as much as I do. It's great. Shit.

Much more uplifting than Absent Friends. A lot of it sounds more like his 90s singles and less like Scott Walker-baroque-pop-sad-crap (that stuff is good, too, though. I've never heard Scott Walker. I'm just assuming that he sounds like the last Divine Comedy album.) There's still some of that, but a whole lot of other stuff, too. Yeah. Cool guitar bits on the first track. Cool other stuff.
