An oldster listens to old music on a Sunday morning.

Rockin' Bones is a Rhino box set dedicated only to rockabilly. Like a lot of Rhino boxes, it tries to have it both ways by combining hits/staples with a lot of rarities and obscurities. Still, pretty comprehensive if you're into this sort of thing.

The Atlantic Unearthed collections are rare and unreleased songs from Atlantic/Atco's golden age of soul (1964-73 or so). Some of the big names (Otis, Aretha) are represented by b-sides and the like. Really solid.

The two new songs are actually pretty good. "Message To The Boys" reminds me of "Alex Chilton" but not as good.

"Message" is pretty good -- could have made it on "Pleased to Meet Me" or "Don't Tell a Soul." "Pool and Dive," though, sounds phoned in and is a dissappointment.

It's nice to see them opening up their new album with a rocking 10 minute jam.
After Summer Sun I was worried that they lost their edge. This sounds promising.
Can't wait for the official release in Sept.

i don't know that it's particularly interesting music. some of it echoes bits and pieces from "The Wall." i don't really understand much of what he's going on about. but for whatever reason, i think i like it. surprisingly.

and chocolate town. but I really love the whole album to tell you the truth.
there's no filler on it, except maybe the f**t jam.

This sounds a lot better on headphones than it does in my car. I need to stop hearing albums for the first time while driving, I don't get nearly as much out of it as I would if I sat down with it and gave it a proper listen first.

Already did. And I'll forgive Hewlett's ignorance, if he comes under the tutelage of myself and Sask in all things Maiden (Maiden Week 2006 ... next few months, motherfuckers!).

And that cover is fucking insane ... there's a list of all the references to pop culture and Maiden history

The solo in "Wasted Years" is, like, one of the best damn things ever created by man. I know a lot of metalheads back in the day wrung their hands at Maiden's use of guitar synths on this album (for the first time), but its really inobtrusive.

Obviously, I approve highly of this album.

I'm really torn on this one, there's a couple really great tracks but some crap filler too. He really shouldn't try to be a "club" guy. The Strokes sample is pretty cool. I can't decide if I love or hate the one that sounds like snap-hop being mashed up with 1987 Beasties Boys.

It's not out until August 22nd...I just got a copy yesterday.

It's good, but there are too many dialogue snippets that tend to interrupt the music/vocals. But overall, a really smooth, cool listen.
